CHRISTIAN INITIATION For school age children, teens or adults follows the RCIA process, also called the Catechumenate, for those thinking and joining the Roman Catholic Church by celebrating Baptism, Confirmation and/or first Eucharist: inquiries may be made by calling the Religious Education Office. In cases with those of the faithful whose health is seriously impaired by sickness or old age, please contact one of the priests to celebrate the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. CHRISTIAN MARRIAGE Engaged couples call the Rectory for an appointment with one of the priests or deacons at least six months in advance of the sacramental celebration. 2 March 5, Sunday in Lent st Today, the Second Collection is a Diocesan collection for the Black and Indian Missions. The revenue from this collection will be used to support the Church s concern for evangelizing the Black and Indian people of the United States. The funds are distributed as grants to dioceses throughout the United States, supporting and strengthening evangelization programs which otherwise would cease. WELCOME! SACRAMENTS TO THE HOMEBOUND Lent is an especially good time to bring the Sacrament of the Eucharist to the homebound. If you have a homebound relative, neighbor, or friend in the parish who you think might wish to receive Communion at home, please let that person know that we are very interested in bringing Communion to them (and also of making the Sacraments of Penance and the Anointing of the Sick available to them at home if they wish). All it takes to begin the process is a request through the parish office. Please assure those interested that all visits would be at definite times and days arranged in advance. ARISE Together in Christ is an international, diocesansponsored, parish-centered endeavor to renew and strengthen our faith. Following our successful Fall 2016 season in which over 80 people participated, our second season will resume for six weekly sessions during Lent, beginning the last week of February. Groups of 5-10 people will meet at mutually convenient times, to share personal faith experiences in encountering Christ in biblical readings and today. Open to all, including non-parishioners, we will read and discuss: Jesus telling us how to fast and make donations; the Transfiguration of the Lord; Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well; Nicodemus asking Jesus how we can be born again; learn from an Old Testament prophet about the new covenant; Jesus accepting death on the cross. 3 A Note from Fr. Larry This will be a short note because of Ash Wednesday. It was my privilege to preside at a brief re-commital ceremony and blessing of all of the parish lay ministers and other parish volunteers at each of the Masses this past weekend. We have well over one hundred people voluntarily giving their time and talents to help this parish. The recommital ceremonies were opportunities for me to publically acknowledge and thank them on behalf of the entire parish (and of course to encourage others to join them!). Thank you again to all of our lay ministers and volunteers. The ARISE Together in Christ small groups have begum meeting for ARISE Season Two. Many thanks for the ARISE Leadership Team for their diligent organizing activities during the past several weeks. We will be praying at our weekend Masses that the ARISE program will spiritually enrich the individual participants and the parish as a whole during this sacred season of Lent. Lent is an especially good time to bring the Sacraments to the homebound. Please see the separate item in this week s bulletin on this subject. Please give some thought to this brief commentary on the Gospel for the First Sunday of Lent: Today s Gospel brings us face to face with the reality of spiritual warfare. A battle is going on in the desert. The devil is out to win the allegiance of the Son of God. But Jesus fights back. Not with fists or knives, but with the word of God. For every temptation the devil proposes, Jesus arms himself with the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. (Eph.6:17). During Lent, we have the opportunity to fortify ourselves for this serious, if silent, combat. Just as Jesus fasted and prayed forty days before that diabolical encounter, we fast to strengthen our self-control, we give alms to strengthen our generosity, and we pray to strengthen our faith in God s providence. A sincere effort now, in the desert of Lent, can lead us to victory as we engage in the ongoing spiritual battle for the allegiance of our souls. Connect! PRO LIFE QUOTES Norma McCorvey, the woman whose case was used to legalize abortion in Roe v. Wade before she became a pro-life activist, has died at 69. McCorvey was Jane Rose in Roe v Wade. Her lawyers challenged Texas law preventing her from aborting her baby, opening the door for abortion on demand in the United States. However, McCorvey herself never ended up obtaining an abortion. After working in the abortion industry, McCorvey became a pro-life Christian in She said helping legalize abortion was the biggest mistake of my life. And on August 17, 1998, she was received into the roman Catholic church by Fater Frank Pavone, the International Director of Priests for Life and Father Edward Robinson in Dallas.
