Wade 2018 is the 45th Anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court s pro-abortion decision in the case of Roe v. Wade. In Holy Name of Jesus parish we will observe this sad anniversary in two ways: at 3:00pm on Sunday, January 21st, we will have a Holy Hour for Life in the church. This will include Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet, the Litany for Life, a few moments of silent prayer for protection of all human life from conception to natural death, and Benediction. At our regularly scheduled 9:00am Mass on Monday, January 22nd, we will be using Prayers (and appropriate Intercessions) for the Mass For Giving Thanks to God for the Gift of Human Life. Please join us at either one or both of these observances if possible.

3 A NOTE FROM FR. LARRY Last week s snow and bitter cold were the biggest items of news around the parish and around the entire Tri-State area. Despite the single digit temperatures, on Saturday afternoon, January 6th, Park Slope Youth Theatre Company (PSYTC) went forward with their Junior Company s production of You re a Good Man, Charlie Brown in Shepherds Hall. The cast was an amazingly talented group of 6, 7 and 8 year-olds (many of whom are students at our aligned St, Joseph the Worker s Catholic Academy) who had clearly prepared very diligently. Congratulations to the young cast, their families and the PSYTC staff for warming a lot of hearts on a very cold day. Many thanks also to the Three Kings from our Hispanic Community who reenacted the Visit of the Magi as the Gospel for the Solemnity of the Epiphany was read at our Sunday Morning 9 AM Spanish Mass. There are four important observances coming up during the period from January 15th through January 22nd, 2018: Monday January 15th is the Federal Holiday in honor of the birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Civil Rights leader who did so much to promote the causes of justice and equality in this country. It is a secular holiday, but we will include some appropriate prayers and intersessions in our regularly-scheduled 9 AM Monday Morning Mass. Thursday, January 18th, is the beginning of the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, which will be observed here at Holy Name with appropriate Mass prayers and intercessions at different times during the week. Friday, January 19th is the date for the 2018 March for Life in Washington, DC. Please pray for the safety of all those (especially those many young people) who will be traveling long distances to attend the March. Also please see the information elsewhere in this bulletin concerning the buses scheduled by the Diocese for transportation to and from Washington. nd th Monday, January 22 is the 45 Anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court s pro-abortion decision in the case of Roe v. The Church is now in Ordinary Time (Green Vestments on most days) until the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday, February 14th. The Ordinary in the title Ordinary Time refers to the fact that the weeks are ordered or, in more contemporary language, numbered with this Sunday being the Second Sunday in Ordinary Time. There is nothing ordinary about Ordinary Time. Ash Wednesday is only 35 days away. Please take these first few weeks of Ordinary Time to move closer to the Lord. Please consider the following commentary (prepared in 2015 by Kathleen Nolan, a Holy Name parishioner and longtime Catholic High School Religion teacher who passed away in July of 2017) on this week s Readings and Gospel: It s a two-way street in this Sunday s readings. In one direction, we have God calling Samuel, who doesn t even know God yet. In the other direction, we have two disciples following Jesus, and, in effect, calling out to him in curiosity. Communication is like that. We are called; we follow. We listen and we speak. How do we communicate with God? Do we say, Speak, Lord, your servant is listening? What if we don t even recognize the voice like Samuel? What if we don t like what we hear? Are we willing to follow as spontaneously and complete as the Apostles did to find out? The readings seem to be telling us that we need to be open to God s call with faith and trust. (Pax Christi Metro New York) The First Reading recounts the fascinating story of young Samuel sleeping in the temple, who wakes up instantly when he hears his name spoken three times. He runs to his master, Eli, in a frenzy. Who would believe that you could get the voice of God confused with the voice of the old guy sleeping in the neighboring room? Eli at last understands and wisely says, If it happens again, say: Speak, Lord, your servant is listening. Samuel follows the instructions and for the first time he was in contact with the Lord, who turned him into a prophet. Do we always recognize God s call right away? The voice of God isn t always heard in thunder, lightning or extraordinary events and his name doesn t appear on our cell phones or caller ID. Rather, it is more likely heard in our silence and the willingness to continually listen to His call in prayer and in others. The Responsorial Psalm relates I have waited for the Lord; He heard my cry and put a new song into my mouth. How delightful that the Lord is present with us and makes us feel like singing! By the Second Reading, we hear Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you? Let s treat ourselves and others like a sacred space, where God dwells. In the Gospel, Jesus is ready to call Peter and Andrew to be disciples. They are already interested in him, so they follow him. Jesus turns and says bluntly, What are you looking for? It can mean What s up? They stammer, Where are you staying? Jesus replies as he does to us: Come and see. They spend the day with him. Andrew runs to get his brother Simon. Jesus then gives Simon a new name that defines him, which is translated Peter, the rock. Do we sense inside a kind voice whispering an invitation, calling us to be best friends with the Lord? Let us listen and continue the friendship. God calls to us every day. Let s take time to recognize what He has to say. It is about leaving ourselves behind and encountering others, being close to those crushed by life s troubles, sharing with the needy, standing at the side of the sick, elderly and the outcast Come and see : Love is more powerful, love gives life, love makes hope blossom in the wilderness. (Pope Francis, Urbi et Orbi message, April 22, 2014).
