COLLECTION RESULTS Sunday, June 26, 2016 TOTAL TO PARISH: $5, (Includes: $4, Regular First Collection and $ Faith Direct); Renovation and Repair Second Collection $172.00; Faith Direct $46.62) TOTAL TO DIOCESE FOR PETER S PENCE COLLECTION: $1, $1, Second Collection; $ Faith Direct. Summertime Giving with Faith Direct As you are probably aware, church attendance during the summer months tends to drop off as vacations and weekend sporting events often conflict. Many families attend mass near where their weekend activities take them. The services we provide within the parish and for the larger community continue year around, as do their associated expenses. Your consistent financial support of our parish is vital to achieving our stewardship mission. The easiest way to be sure that your gift of treasure reaches us, even when you can t be here, is through enrollment in our electronic offertory program. If you have not yet enrolled we encourage you do so this month. Once you have enrolled, you can relax knowing that Holy Name will receive your gifts throughout the summer. You can enroll three ways forms are available in the back of the church, you can visit Faith Direct s secure web site at to enroll online, or you can call a customer service representative at Faith Direct. Our parish code is NY349 As always, know that your generosity is truly a gift from God.. PRO LIFE QUOTE: You don t have to be a pro-life activist to be sickened by such ghoulish banality (depicted in Planned Parenthood videos) For nothing turns heart and minds more against the culture of abortion than its tendency to dehumanize. And what could be more dehumanizing than the reduction of an unborn baby to its parts? Well, this could: the sight of abortion providers confirming over lunch how much less that baby was worth alive than its parts now that its dead. (Jeff Jacoby in the Boston Globe, 07/22/15)

3 A Note from Fr. Larry This note will be about three things relating to our beautifully restored Church. 1 - Recently we made our final payment to Baker Liturgical Arts for our Church Restoration. This final payment was for some marble work done during the winter months (our weekday Mass goers might remember the scaffolding) of this year on the back and at the top of the Renwick altar. Maintaining the beauty of the Church (and of course repaying the large loan remaining loan balance) will be our continuing responsibility. As I did at the Masses on June 12, 2016 when we celebrated the second anniversary of the Church Re-dedication, I again want to recognize and thank my predecessor, Fr. Jim Cunningham, the members of the Buildings Committee (and especially its chairperson, Nick Sisto), and all who contributed to the project for their vision, hard work, dedication and generosity that made the longdiscussed and hoped-for restoration a reality. You have done a tremendous service to God and to this parish. God bless you all. 2 I ll be saying and writing more about repaying the Church loan at a later date, but today I wanted to report that William Shanley, a longtime Holy Name parishioner, left Holy Name of Jesus Parish $75,000 in his will. With the concurrence of the Finance Committee and the executor of Mr. Shanley s estate, we ve used that money to pay down a portion of our still very large Church Restoration project debt. Mr. Shanley was a retired New York City Firefighter. Due to health issues in the months before his death he had to spend more time in Staten Island to be closer to his nephew; but for many, many years he attended Mass at Holy Name almost daily and assisted in the Church in many ways. At one time he was a parish trustee. He was an early contributor to the Church Restoration Campaign and, in addition to his substantial bequest to Holy Name, he also generously remembered the Society for the Propagation of the Faith in his will. Please remember Mr. Shanley in your prayers. 3 Above I mentioned our obligation to maintain the beauty of the restored Church. That gives me the opportunity to again thank the volunteers who gather after the 9 AM Mass every Saturday morning to clean the Church in preparation for the Saturday Vigil and Sunday morning Masses. A special thanks to Teddy Machalski, a member of that hard-working group who will be leaving Holy Name parish shortly to move back to Chicago. Before coming to Holy Name a few years ago Teddy had already distinguished herself as a wife, mother, grandmother, and supervisory nurse with extensive hospital and corporate experience. At Holy Name she was heavily involved in many ministries: Lector, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, Hospitality, Adult Faith Formation, Adult Altar Server, CREW Youth Ministry, Church cleaning, and probably more. Her skills, work-ethic, and faith have made her a tremendous asset to this parish. We wish her and her loved ones Godspeed and the very best (and we can really use several volunteers to fill in behind her!). Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time In the First Reading we hear a beautiful welcome home for people who had been exiled from Jerusalem, who had hung up their harps because they could not bring themselves to sing in captivity. The Lord tells them to: suck fully of the milk of [Jerusalem s] comfort, that you may nurse with delight at her abundant breasts! As nurslings, you shall be carried in her arms, and fondled in her lap; as a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you. These are Godly, mothering images, immediate and compelling. This is the peace given by God when our wild and shaky lives need to return to God after we have felt separated from Him, either personally or as a community! How many times as a country have we strayed from God s path or even from the intentions of our Founding Fathers? As we celebrate this 4th of July, let us thank God for taking us back and nurturing us, comforting us as a mother does to her nursing child. The Responsorial Psalm reminds us that just when we think the Lord has been absent from us, as a Church or as individuals, God has done tremendous deeds and refused me not my prayer or his kindness. Therefore, we can cry out to God with joy. How reassuring! Let us celebrate the good times! We learn in the reading from Galatians, that some people wanted to follow ancient practices. Paul did not. This can happen in our home, work or Church. We can envision problems in today s Church from the same perspective: Standing vs. kneeling, women vs. men, inclusive language or not, folk versus Latin music. Paul tells us to keep in mind the new creation, to live in Jesus ways and with this will come peace and mercy. He boldly says let no one make troubles for me and then wishes them peace. Paul has enough challenges, both physical and social, urging the community to get along together, so he asks people to keep their problems in the community in perspective and to keep in mind the ways of Christ. If we follow his advice, then we too will have peace. The Gospel from Luke begins with Jesus sending out disciples as ambassadors to go before him, each with a partner to support the other. They are to travel lightly, not with a lot of material goods and to rely on the hospitality of others. We discover that, while the material needs in our community are often great, the spiritual needs may be greater still. People do not always need our advice, but rather the sympathy of our listening hearts and understanding instead of a talking bureau of information. If others do not accept the disciples in the Gospel, they are told to shake the dust off your feet. In other words, don t hold onto the grudge or offense, let it go and get on with the purpose for which they are sent, to spread the

4 Good News. Pope Francis reflected on this passage: Christ says to the 72 disciples in today s Gospel, Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road. Be like lambs... Don t become wolves... Because, at times, temptation makes us think: But this is difficult, these wolves are cunning and I will be even more cunning than them, eh? Lamb. Not a fool, but a lamb. Lamb. With Christian astuteness, but always a lamb. Because if you are a lamb, he defends you. But if you feel strong like a wolf, he does not defend you, he leaves you alone, and the wolves will eat you alive. Like a lamb. One cannot walk as a Christian without joy, one cannot walk as a lamb without joy, [Christians who are constantly complaining and whining] are not doing any favors for the Lord or the Church. Let us live as lambs, relying on the Lord, supporting one another, travelling light, and letting go of any hurt so that we truly spread the joyful news of the kingdom.
