PASSING OF FR. PATRICK G. BURNS By now most of you know that Fr. Patrick Burns passed away on December 14th, 2018 in Holy Name of Jesus Rectory. By the time you read this his wake, Vigil Mass, Funeral Mass, and burial will have already taken place. He had been a resident priest at Holy Name since February of 2018 when he began ministering with the Brooklyn Diocese s Office of Parish Giving. Before coming to Holy Name, Fr. Burns had served the Diocese of Brooklyn as Pastor of the Parishes of St. Michael (Brooklyn), St. Martin of Tours-Fourteen Holy Martyrs (Brooklyn), and Blessed Sacrament (Jackson Heights). He also served as Parochial Vicar of the Parishes of St. Catherine of Alexandria (Brooklyn), Blessed Virgin Mary Help of Christians (Woodside) and St. Francis de Sales (Belle Harbor). He also served the parishes of St. Leo (Corona) and SS. Peter and Paul (Brooklyn). Fr. Patrick was a priest gifted with many talents including exceptional fluency in Spanish, an outstanding singing voice, and tremendous skill as a fundraiser. He helped Holy Name of Jesus Parish in many ways during his short time here. Please pray for the repose of his soul and for the consolation of his family and friends. 3 A NOTE FROM FR. LARRY Holy Name of Jesus Christmas Mass Schedule Please see the separate item in this bulletin concerning the recent passing of Fr. Patrick Burns who had resided in Holy Name Rectory since February of We continue to remember this gifted priest and his family in our prayers and we thank everyone for your expressions of condolences and support. 2 The rest of this note will be short to allow room for the Christmas Flower List and other important items. I certainly want to recognize and thank Rogelio Bravo, the members of the Guadalupe Committee, and all of the other people who worked so hard to make last Saturday s parish observance of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe such a success. We were privileged to have Bishop James Massa return to celebrate the Mass and were all very impressed with how well he delivered his Homily in Spanish. It was a long (starting at 4:30 AM!) but wonderful day of devotion, music, food and joy. 3 I ve had the opportunity to celebrate Advent Class Masses for St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy Grades K through 8 and Advent Church visits for PreK-3 and PreK-4 Classes, and am looking forward to the SJWCA Christmas Show this Thursday evening. 4 Ivonne Rojas and her choirs and Cheryl Jablow and her Environment Committee volunteers have been hard at work preparing the music and the Church for Christmas; but before we get to Christmas we still have the Masses of the 4th Sunday of Advent to celebrate. Our first reading this weekend is from the prophet Micah and our Gospel is a portion of Luke s beautiful account of the Visitation of Our Blessed Mother Mary to her older cousin Elizabeth. There is no room for a Scripture Note this week, but I want to very briefly mention three important lessons to be drawn from this Sunday s Readings: the reading from Micah reminds us that very great things can come from small things; the example of Elizabeth s becoming pregnant at a very advanced age reminds us that we should never, never give up hope; and the example of the pregnant Mary undertaking the difficult journey to visit Elizabeth reminds us of the importance of trusting in God and moving in accordance with His will. 5 This will be my last note of Merry and blessed Christmas and New Year s wishes to you and your loved ones with my continuing thanks for all of your support for HNJ Parish and for me.
