Gloria s Thank You Recently, Gloria Bischoff left Smith Duffy Funeral Home to work closer to home. Over the years Gloria has been instrumental in helping many of our parishioners in times of sorrow. This Sunday, April 15th, Gloria would like the members of our parish community to attend 12 noon Mass with her and then join her in Shepherds Hall for light refreshments. This is Gloria s way to say thank you to everyone who has touched her life in this parish. All are welcome to attend immediately following Mass. SACRAMENTS TO THE HOMEBOUND The Easter season is a very good time to bring the Sacrament of the Eucharist to the homebound. If you have a homebound relative, neighbor, or friend in the parish who you think might wish to receive Communion at home, please let that person know that we are very interested in bringing Communion to them (and also making the Sacraments of Penance and the Anointing of the Sick available to them at home if they wish). All it takes to begin the process is a request through the parish office. Please assure those interested that all visits would be at definite times and days arranged in advance. Food Pantry The Food Pantry will distribute food from the rectory basement between 2 and 3 PM on April 21, and May 5 & 19. At this time pasta, tuna, and cereal are needed. Thank you for your ongoing support. St. Vincent de Paul Clothing Donation A St. Vincent de Paul truck will be in front of the church 9 AM - Noon on Sunday May 6 to collect clothes. Please bring the clothes directly to the truck on that day since we do not have room to store clothing in the rectory. Thank you. Jeremiah Project This program is for high school boys who show exemplary Christian values and are willing to learn more about the priesthood. This program invites students to participate in a monthly overnight experience and share in the fraternity of college seminarians. The next overnight will be May 4th-May 5th from 5:30PM on the Friday to 1:00PM on Saturday. 3 A NOTE FROM FR. LARRY 1 Holy Name Dinner Dance: Last Friday evening, Mary Kay Rail Kahaly, Franciscan Brother Robert Kent and I were the honorees at 2018 Holy Name Dinner Dance. Mary Kay and Brother Robert were raised in Holy Name parish, graduated from Holy Name School and went on to distinguished careers. I, the newcomer, was privileged to be included with such impressive co-honorees. When It was my turn to speak I of course thanked the Dinner Dance Committee (Kathleen Pynn Cottingham, Martin Cottingham, Ann Dolan, Jim O Dea, Anthony Caccamo, Louise O Connor. etc.) for all the hard work they put into this year s Dinner Dance (as they have done for so many years in the past). I thanked all those who have so faithfully supported this event which is an important financial help to the parish and to our aligned St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy. I went on to mention many of the blessings I have received in my life (loving family, excellent education, good health, ordination to the priesthood at an unusually late age, assignment to and acceptance by the wonderful parishioners of Holy Name, and many more). I closed my brief remarks as follows (which I meant to apply to all the parishioners and friends of Holy Name): As a person who has been blessed with so much, I am not unmindful of what St. Luke wrote (paraphrased slightly) in Chapter 12, Verse 28 of his Gospel To whom much is given, much will be expected. I will continue to try to do my best to meet the expectations you and God have for me. Thank you for honoring me and God bless you and your loved ones always. 2 13: The Musical: This past weekend Park Slope Performing Arts Youth Theatre Company (PSYTC) put on two performances of 13: The Musical in Shepherds Hall. This show was originally performed on Broadway in 2008 and in London in It was written to be performed by a teenage cast. It has plenty of singing and dancing, but also involves many of the more complex issues relating to entering the often-difficult teenage years. The PSYTC production was excellent, with fine performances by all of the young cast members. Holy Name/St Joseph the Workers performers and student-directors I recognized included Emily Andrade, Lauren and Emily Caccamo, Matthew and Kiera Galligan, Siobhan O Hea, and Elisabella Recio. I hope I haven t missed anyone. Congratulations to cast, crew, PSYTC adult teachers and staff, and to all families and loved ones involved. 3 St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy registration: During February and March and again this week our bulletins have included notices about registration being open for all grade levels (PreK-3 through 8) at our aligned St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Academy. Financial Aid is available for qualified families but the deadline for applying for financial aid is April 30th. For further information, please call the Academy office at Please consider the following commentary (prepared in 2015 by Kathleen Nolan, a holy Name parishioner and longtime Catholic High School Religion teacher who passed away in July of 2017) on this week s Readings and Gospel: Here we go again. At Christmas, the Church gives us the slaughter of the innocents. At Easter, it reminds us of our sinfulness and Jesus suffering. Can t we just celebrate without these sobering memories? But the message is clear: Suffering and Celebration are both intimate parts of life, even life in Christ. We may not like it, but that s the way it is, and if God made it so, there must be a very good reason. Hard as it is, let us embrace the suffering so that the celebration is all the sweeter and our own ministries are all the more understanding and compassionate. Then, like Jesus, let s always be ready for a good meal with friends. In the First Reading, we hear that the author of life was put to death and raised from the dead. What a beautiful metaphor for Jesus! Life itself has come among us! We are invited to repent from any wrongdoings we have committed. Luke says in Acts, I know that you acted out of ignorance and so all is forgiven if you repent. Is the point of this reading to lay blame for Jesus death, or to tell us that sin can be erased and the offenders are raised to new life? We are asked to repent. In English, this word is often misunderstood. In the gospels, the original Greek word was metanoia. Literally this means to do an about face, to turn around, to face in an entirely new direction. Metanoia means to move beyond our present mindset and present way of seeing things. We re all capable of this, with God s grace. Responsorial Psalm 4 is often used by monastic communities as they chant before going to bed. Let the light of your countenance shine upon us; you put gladness in my heart. I lie down in peace and sleep comes at once. God s presence can bless us with true rest. The Second Reading assures us that we have an Advocate, like a lawyer, someone who will go to bat for us, if we do sin. The excerpt says that if we don t keep God s commandments but say that we know the Lord, we are liars and that if we don t keep the Lord s commandments, we don t know the Lord. This is strong language! The test is not whether we have sweet religious experiences but whether we keep the Lord s commands. We are called to live out what God wills for the world: justice, peace, forgiveness, repentance and love for all. Who are the two disciples in the Gospel on their way to Emmaus? Were they friends, husband and wife, two random people who were confused? The disciples hero was dead, the man they had thought was the messiah. Jesus enters the upper room and greets them with Peace! He asks them to touch his wounds so that they have some tangible evidence of what he had endured, just as he did with Thomas. And then he eats with them. What better way to celebrate life than to have a meal? He is not distant from them; he is still flesh and blood, eating fish and bread. These two disciples were delighted and amazed. His forgiveness is for all people, not just those who witnessed him in the flesh, but for all nations and people. How inclusive! This forgiveness enables us to let go of past hurts, to open up the space for a peaceful new future. This is how Jesus is known, how we touch Jesus today and share Him with others. Let us forgive, greet one another with true peace and celebrate at meals that the Lord is with us!
