3 A NOTE FROM FR. LARRY 1 - I returned from my annual priest s retreat this morning. It was a great five days and I thank Msgr. Curran and Fr. Austin for enabling me to fulfill this important (and valuable!) requirement of Canon Law before the end of August. While on retreat I had more time than I normally would to think, read and pray about the shock, sorrow and anger resulting from the details of clergy sexual abuse stretching back over 70 years contained in the recentlyreleased Pennsylvania Grand Jury report; and the continuing controversy over the Church hierarchy s handling of the abuse allegations against former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick. I join with many other bishops and priests in expressing our sorrow for all instances of clergy abuse and our concern for the victims. The fact that many of the offenses described in the Pennsylvania report occurred many years ago in no way mitigates the harm that was done. We continue to pray that the reforms that the Catholic Church in America instituted beginning in 2002 will continue to drastically reduce the number of more recent allegations and continue to help the victims find some degree of healing. On Monday, August 29, Bishop Robert Barron, who through his Word on Fire Ministries is one of the great contemporary American Catholic evangelizers, held a Q & A session about these matters. He covered many aspects of the current controversies (including his very interesting recommendation for a largely lay expert lead inquiry to determine and to share exactly what the true facts are in the McCarrick situation). The Q & A session is available on YouTube and it is well worth watching. I was particularly interested in how well Bishop Barron described how the current situation is one of great spiritual warfare between the Devil and Jesus (who is the Way, the Truth!, and the Life). Bishop Barron reminded all those watching that now is not the time for Catholics (despite their justifiable anger) to distance themselves from their Church, the Church that was established by Jesus Christ; the Church that has undergone, survived, and actually been strengthened by many crises down through the centuries. Bishop Barron urged Catholics (clergy and lay) to use the spiritual tools of the sacraments, prayer, and fasting to help bring about the healing of the victims of clergy abuse and the cleansing and strengthening of the Catholic Church as a result of these current controversies. 2 - This is Labor Day Weekend, the unofficial end of summer. We ll say some extra prayers for all those traveling for recreation or to return to school. A safe and Happy Labor Day to all. Please consider the following commentary on this weekend s First Reading and Gospel: Clean Hands, Dirty Hands Dirt is matter out of place. A farmer does not call the fertile soil that nurtures her soybean crop dirt. But that same soil tracked by kids across the kitchen linoleum is definitely dirt, decidedly matter out of place. That simple fact reminds us that human preoccupation with purity and cleanliness is not so much about hygiene as it is about creating a sense of order. And that helps us understand the interest of the Pharisees in purity, in keeping clear the borders between clean and unclean in the management of space, things, and human behavior. One of the glories of the Torah, celebrated in today's reading from Deuteronomy, is that the Mosaic laws covered all of life and integrated the ordinary business of civic life and household management with the worship of God. Thus all the details of one's life, properly ordered, were part of living out the covenant of one's relationship with God. It was inevitable that the human passion for order, so often expressed in the separation of the clean from the unclean, should become an important part of this living of the divine Law. And therein lay a danger in the Law: the focus on external purity of surfaces and behavior could itself become disordered and threaten the whole point of the Law right relationships among people and between them and their God. It was an ancient problem, addressed often by the prophets; and now in this Sunday's Gospel we hear Jesus join those prophetic voices, indeed quoting one of them (Isaiah), in calling people back to the basics. What Jesus says about a pure heart being more important than clean hands parallels exactly what he says in the Sermon on the Mount about attending to one's lust and anger. To drive his point home with his disciples, Jesus dares to draw an earthy analogy from their experience of digestion and defecation (missing from the Lectionary reading): Do you not realize that everything that goes into a person from outside cannot defile, since it enters not the heart but the stomach and passes out into the latrine? But what comes out of a person, that is what defiles. From within people, from their hearts, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly.
