3 A NOTE FROM FR. LARRY Last Sunday afternoon several HNJ parishioners joined me at the special Mass at St. James Co-Cathedral celebrated by Bishop DiMarzio (with almost 100 Bishops and priests as concelebrants) to pray for the canonization of Bishop Francis X. Ford, who was born and raised in Brooklyn, who served as a Maryknoll priest and Bishop in China until he died in a Communist Chinese prison in 1952, and for whom nearby Bishop Ford High School was named. Bishop Ford was a very holy missionary and an important figure in Brooklyn Diocese and Catholic Church history. Bishop DiMarzio was pleased at the impressive turnout for this Mass and expressed his personal thanks to all who made the extra effort to be there. ADVENT REMINDERS: This year Thanksgiving was later and consequently Christmas seems to be coming much faster than usual. Please do not let that interfere with your observance of the beautiful season of Advent. By the time you read this we will already have had our Fathers Guild Tree Lighting Ceremony in Mary s Field and our parish tree lighting ceremony in front of the Rectory. However, as mentioned elsewhere in the bulletin, you can still attend the Brooklyn Diocese s Nativity Creche Blessing and Christmas Tree Lighting at Grand Army Plaza at 4 PM on Monday, December 11th. From 7 to 8 PM on Monday, December 11th we will have our Advent Holy Hour in Holy Name Church. It will be time for quiet prayer and reflection before the exposed Blessed Sacrament that will conclude with Benediction. If you cannot be there for the entire time, please try to join us for a few minutes at any time during the hour. At 7 PM on Thursday, December 14th, we will have Lessons and Carols, the traditional Advent devotion of music, Scripture and prayer in Holy Name Church. Please see the flyer elsewhere in this bulletin. From 6 PM to 8 PM on Monday, December 18th, we will have Confessions in Holy Name Church. Anyone who is in the Church at 8 PM will have his or her Confession heard. Please make a good Confession during Advent. MASS SCHEDULES FOR THE 4TH SUNDAY OF ADVENT, CHRISTMAS EVE, AND CHRISTMAS DAY: This year, Sunday, December 24th is both the 4th Sunday of Advent and Christmas Eve while Monday, December 25th is of course Christmas Day. During the morning of Sunday, December 24th, we will have our regular (fulfilling the Sunday Mass obligation) Sunday morning Masses for the 4th Sunday of Advent (7:30 AM, 9:00 AM (Spanish); 10:30 AM (Family), 12 Noon). As indicated elsewhere in the bulletin, we will begin our observance of Christmas Eve/Christmas Day with Confessions from 1:30 to 3:00 PM on Sunday afternoon, December 24th. Our Christmas Eve Vigil Masses (satisfying the Christmas Mass obligation) will be on Sunday, December 24th at the usual Christmas Eve times: 4:00 PM, 5:30 PM (Family Mass with Bishop Massa presiding), 10:00 PM (Spanish) and 12 AM Midnight Mass. On Monday, December 25th, Christmas Day we will (as usual) only have two Masses at 7:30 AM and 12 Noon. There will be no 9 AM (Spanish) or 10:30 AM Mass on December 25th. Please consider the following commentary on this Sunday s Gospel (Mark 1:1-18): In today s Gospel, John the Baptist speaks about what s to come. It s going to be different. It s going to be better. When he comes the Messiah something amazing is going to happen. I have baptized you with water, John says, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. With the coming of Christ, we move from water to Spirit in other words, from the natural to the supernatural. Jesus takes our lives to a new level. But we have to be ready to join in on this spiritual journey. That s why John went around baptizing people for the repentance of their sins. He wants to be sure their spirits were ready to receive the Spirit when the time came. During Advent, we take a similar approach. We focus on what lies ahead: the coming of Christ. Certainly, this season involves preparing for Christmas when we remember this original advent of the Lord. But another important element is to make ourselves ready for the second coming of Christ. This is the moment for which we must always be ready. But we have an advantage that John s followers did not have. We already have the Spirit of the Lord in our hearts as baptized Christians. The question is only how cooperative we are going to be in the process. How attentive will we be to the promptings of this Holy Spirit, often as quiet as a whisper? (Liturgical Publications, Inc. 4 Food Pantry The Food Pantry will distribute food from the rectory basement on Dec. 16 and Jan. 6 & 20 between 2 and 3 PM. At this time, rice, cans of tuna, and beans are needed. We give thanks to Dr. Mitchell Benson, Dentist, for giving us toothbrushes and tooth paste which we distributed at the pantry last Saturday. New Year Party For our departed loved ones.
