CONFIRMATION All students, including those in Catholic schools, are to register in August of their junior year of high school. Call the office for registration requirements. FIRST PENANCE AND FIRST COMMUNION All children, including those in Catholic schools, should be registered at the beginning of their second grade year in order to participate in the sacramental preparation. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION First through tenth -graders meet on Tuesday evenings, October-April. Vacation Bible School, for children ages 4-10, is held for one week each summer. Confirmation students must complete 24 hours of high school religious education prior to their junior year. Adults wishing to learn more about their Catholic faith, including those wishing to become members of the Catholic Church, should call the office to speak with Gerrie Baumbouree. SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE The church can be reserved as much as 18 months before a wedding. In most cases, diocesan policy requires an appointment six months prior to the wedding date. Couples are required to attend a diocesan marriage preparation course. Please view wedding guidelines on the parish web site, under Our Parish. 3 PANCAKE BREAKFAST Building Our Future Together Centennial Campaign Prayer The St. Leo-Seton Knights of Columbus are hosting a free Back-to-School Pancake Breakfast, this Sunday September 18 th from 9:00AM - 10:30AM in the Fr. LaFleur Family Center. All are welcome and encouraged to come and celebrate as a community. Heavenly Father, give us the grace to build your Kingdom in our Diocese. We can only accomplish this noble task by allowing you to expand our hearts. 4 PASTOR S CORNER September 17-18, 2016 J U L This past Wednesday, September 14, St. Elizabeth Seton Church Parish quietly celebrated our 41 st Anniversary as a Church Parish of the Diocese of Lafayette. Bishop Gerard Frey established our parish on September 14, 1975, the day that St. Elizabeth Seton was canonized in Rome. The Bishop appointed Father Gene Lafleur as the first Pastor of our church parish. From modest, simple and humble beginnings, the community of St. Elizabeth Seton Church has grown over the past four decades to the delightful, hospitable, friendly, faithful and generous community that we are today as a Catholic Church Parish. The Lord has been so gracious and bountiful in his graces and blessings over the past 41 years through the Pastors, the hundreds and hundreds of families and friends of our Parish. I do want to acknowledge the diligence, the leadership and the zeal of the Priests, Deacons and Religious who have served the people of St. Elizabeth Seton over the years. Each of them has added so much to the vitality, to the character and the spirit of our Church Family. I do want to say a word of appreciation to the many laity who have also served as leaders, as staff, as volunteers and as ministers here at St. Elizabeth Seton over the past 41 years. The Priests who have served as Pastors have been so instrumental in forming the community of faith that St. Elizabeth Seton is today. Father Gene Lafleur served from 1975 to 1987; Father Russell Harrington served from 1988 to 1994; Father Harold Trahan served from 1995 to 2007 and Father Mary Borcherding served from 2007 to I have been so blessed to be your Pastor since July 1, I feel so much at home here with all of you; I am a fellow parishioner as well as your Pastor. May our 41 st Anniversary be a time for us to renew and to refresh our belonging to St. Elizabeth Seton Church Parish! May we be steadfast in our gathering to worship, praise and adore the Lord each and every Sunday or Saturday afternoon. May we be devoted to our daily personal and family prayers, our Bible reading and our devotions. May we strive to be faithful and generous stewards of the Lord s blessings and gifts by sharing our time, our talent and our treasure in the community of St. Elizabeth Seton Church Parish. May we respond to the Lord and become involved in some ministry, program or activity here at St. Elizabeth Seton. With Jesus Christ as our Savior, Shepherd and Teacher, may his Spirit lead us to make stewardship, a way of life. May each of our hearts feel a sense of joy, hope, pride and peace to belong to such a blessed faith community as St. Elizabeth Seton! Last weekend (September 10-11), Brody Viator spoke before each of the Masses about the new Parish Website. He did an excellent job in presenting the features of the website and the great resource that the website is for us now and in the future. Take time and look at the website and enjoy some of its features that Brody pointed out to us last weekend. I am so grateful to all those who were helpful to setting up and designing the new website. My gratitude to Dale Firmin, Kathy Mouton, Brian Phillips, Kevin and Lisa Prejean (and their company, Prejean Creative), Peter Piazza and Diane Triche who were part of the Parish Website Committee at some time or other. Brody deserves a special thanks for all he has done for the new website and for his coming to speak at all the Masses last weekend. As you use the new parish website, please offer any suggestion to the members of the committee to improve the website. The special collection for the Flood Victims amounted to $15,880. Thank you all for your generosity and your kindness in sharing some of your resources to help those who have been so affected by the flooding of their homes and property. You as a community of faith are indeed a generous, compassionate and caring people. And we also thank the family from Illinois who sent a $2,000 check! May the Lord bless them with his grace, peace and serenity. This Wednesday, September 21, is the Feast of St. Matthew, the Apostle and Evangelist. The Gospel for Mass that day will be your homework for the week: Matthew 9:9-13. May the call of Matthew echo the call of the Lord to each one of us to follow him and to be his disciple and his servant. 5 PRAYER OF POPE FRANCIS FOR THE YEAR OF MERCY Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal; and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: If you knew the gift of God! You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness, in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen PRAYER FOR HURRICANE PROTECTION ST. MARY BUS TRIP TO SAN ANTONIO DECEMBER 10-12, 2016 St. Mary Mother of the Church is hosting a Bus Trip to San Antonio on December 10-12, 2016, to celebrate the Christmas Season in colorful, Mexican-American style and to attend Our Lady of Guadalupe Feast Mass and Celebration. This 2-night trip includes easy access to San Antonio s Downtown Riverwalk where you will find Holiday Boat Caroling, Arts & Crafts, Fiesta de las Luminaries, shopping, restaurants, the Rio San Antonio Cruise (tickets paid individually), and more. Over 70,000 Christmas lights and 2500 luminaries light the way along the River. On Sunday, December 11, a local guide will lead us as we visit the Missions, the Alamo, and other local treats ; we will also visit and tour the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Little Flower. On Monday, December 12, we will celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe with special services. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control. The Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awaken from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season we turn to you, O Loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. 0 Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach heavenly Jerusalem where a stormless eternity awaits us. 7 OUR RESPONSIBILITY FOR OTHERS The Second Vatican Council has called us to envision the Church as the people of God. As a community of believers we are responsible for our brothers and sisters, their salvation, their journey of faith, their physical wellbeing. Many of the documents of Vatican II and volumes of work since the mid-1960s give us advice, guidelines, and encouragement to take care of one another: the poor, the elderly, the unborn, the broken, the infirm. Because Vatican II is part of our recent history - indeed many of us were already born - this may strike us as a new and revolutionary idea. But today s readings show us the agelessness of the issue of social justice. Eight hundred years before Christ was born, Amos warned the wealthy not to cheat the poor. In Paul s first letter to Timothy, he encourages all prayers to be for all people; and finally, the Gospel urges the wise use of money. Homework for the week of Sept Sept. 24 Matthew 9:9-13 PRAY FOR OUR PRIESTS TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Customs surrounding the naming of babies are interesting, and over time the Church has tried to offer some motherly advice to direct parents in this necessary chore. The ritual book used for baptism from the sixteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries advised priests to guard against giving ridiculous or pagan names to babies consigned to their ministry. In 1666 the diocesan ritual of Bourges in France was even more exacting, telling the priests to see to it that boys were named after male saints, girls after female saints, and no one got named after a festival. Yet, records from that very diocese in later years shows a few babies named Toussaint (after All Saints Day) along with other creative expressions. In Spain, no one has ever hesitated to name babies after festivals, especially girls after Our Lady, and so there are names like Concepion, Asuncion, and of course Dolores (after Our Lady of Sorrows). In Italy and Spain is it likely that a child will receive the name of the saint of the day of its birth. Today s rites of initiation for adults and infants urge the giving of a Christian name, and in the case of an adult whose given name expresses a pagan or unseemly idea there is a formal rite during the catechumenate for the giving of a Christian name. In such a case, it would make sense for the change to be registered with civil authorities as well. For all Christians, the idea of having a heavenly patron to pray to on life s journey is reason enough to pay attention to this treasure in our tradition. - Rev. James Field, J.S. Paluch Co.
