We always appreciate your generosity. On this Sunday, we continue to read from the Bread of Life discourse found in the sixth chapter of John s Gospel. Recall that we have been reading from this chapter for the past two weeks and will continue to read from it for another two. Last week, the crowd asked for a sign that would show that Jesus came from God. Jesus replied by saying that he is the sign and the bread of life sent by God. At this point, our Lectionary omits six verses in which Jesus predicts the unbelief of the crowd and further develops his connection with God the Father. In these verses, Jesus says that he was sent by God to do the Father s will. Jesus promises that those who look upon the Son with faith will find eternal life. Some of these themes are repeated in today s Gospel reading. Today s Gospel begins with a report that the Jews complained about Jesus claims regarding his identity. They knew his family, and they knew he was the son of Joseph. They could not comprehend what Jesus meant when he said that he came down from heaven. Jesus responds to the complaints by saying that only those who are chosen by God will recognize him as the one that God sent. This is a recurring theme in John s Gospel, that God has chosen those who will have faith in Jesus. In the verses that follow, Jesus talks more about his unity with the Father. He is the one who has seen the Father and, therefore, knows the Father. Those who listen to God will recognize that Jesus is the one sent from God. Those who believe will have eternal life. Jesus concludes with the central element of our Eucharistic theology. He promises that the bread of life will bring eternal life to those who partake of it, and he tells us that the bread of life will be his own flesh, given for the life of the world. In today s reading, we hear Jesus say again, as he did in last week's Gospel, that he is the bread of life. We also hear Jesus add that he is the living bread. Both of these statements help us understand better the gift that Jesus gives us in the Eucharist. We celebrate this gift of Jesus each time we gather for Mass. We believe that receiving Jesus in the Eucharist will lead us to eternal life. Are you feeling the need to make a commitment to a liturgical ministry? Inquiry Night for the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults process (RCIA) is Thursday, August 30, 6:30 p.m. in the PAC. This process if for anyone who is not baptized, as well as those who are baptized in another faith background, or baptized Catholics who have not received Communion and Confirmation. 3 Fellow Parishioners: It has been sometime since I communicated with you. I hope that you have been keeping cool. This has truly been a hot summer. Most of you know that I have had a recent bout with skin cancer. As of this writing, four out of the five spots are cancer free. On Monday I go to have may last spot examined. Please pray that I can be five for five. On Friday, August 24, our new bishop will be installed. We (priests of the Diocese) had an opportunity to meet Bishop Michael Duca and he strikes me as a down to earth person and one who is very easy to speak to and is comfortable with others. Let us pray for him and our Diocese. On Monday, August 27, we begin another year of Parish School of Religion. Let us pray that we will have another good year. The strength of our program is not only the good leaders, teachers and aides, but most especially the commitment and support of our parents and guardians. I thank all who have stepped up and offered themselves in ministry at our Liturgy of the Eucharist. We have a number of new Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist, Proclaimers of the Word, altar servers, choir and ushers/greeters. Let us continue to grow. There is always room for more. Some may be interested in ministering in Children s Church that is offered at the 10:15 Eucharist, if so, please contact me. As I write this letter, we are celebrating the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. At the moment of our death, unlike Mary our body and soul will not be assumed into heaven, but we are promised resurrection. We are promised resurrection, if we magnify the Lord by way we live our life now according to the Lord s plan for us. Mary models for us how to live the Lord s way, truth and life, in other words, the Lord s will. When we live in this manner, our soul is magnifying the Lord. I offer the following prayer to help us to continue to live as such: LORD, LIVE IN ME AND THROUGH ME. God bless and have a good week. Bishop Michael G. Duca will be installed as the 6th bishop of the Diocese of Baton Rouge on August 24, Bishop Duca currently serves as Bishop of the Diocese of Shreveport. He has served many roles over the years at the parish and diocesan level, including rector, campus minister, Vocations Director, and Director of Ongoing Formation of Priests. In addition to being on many boards, Bishop Duca is a member of the USCCB, La Conference of Catholic Bishops, and Immediate Past President of the La, Interchurch Conference.
