CONFIRMATION All students, including those in Catholic schools, are to register in August of their junior year of high school. Call the office for registration requirements. FIRST PENANCE AND FIRST COMMUNION All children, including those in Catholic schools, should be registered at the beginning of their second grade year in order to participate in the sacramental preparation. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION First through tenth -graders meet on Tuesday evenings, October-April. Vacation Bible School, for children ages 4-10, is held for one week each summer. Confirmation students must complete 24 hours of high school religious education prior to their junior year. Adults wishing to learn more about their Catholic faith, including those wishing to become members of the Catholic Church, should call the office to speak with Gerrie Baumbouree. SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE The church can be reserved as much as 18 months before a wedding. In most cases, diocesan policy requires an appointment six months prior to the wedding date. Couples are required to attend a diocesan marriage preparation course. Please view wedding guidelines on the parish web site, under Our Parish. Harrington, S.J., This reliable, to-the-point, and informative guide by renowned Bible scholar Daniel J. Harrington is an excellent resource for Catholics who want to grow in their understanding and appreciation of Sacred Scripture. This work is the product of 30 years of teaching, preaching and praying with Scriptural texts. It includes appropriate methods for analyzing Scripture passages and answers many questions about what Catholics believe about the Bible. A sampling of some of the book s chapters are How Do Catholics Read the Old and New Testaments, How Do Catholics Interpret Scripture, and What Place Does the Bible Have in Catholic Life. Bishop Deshotel will lead the Centennial Pilgrimage, which is scheduled for August 27-September 5, 2018, and which will include stops in Montreal, Quebec City, and Nova Scotia, including a visit to Grand Pre, the site of the famous Acadian Settlement. 4 PASTOR S CORNER July 15-16, 2017 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus, J U L I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for welcoming me to St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church. It is indeed an honor to be with you and to serve our Lord. My first week here has been very exciting as well as overwhelming. I am trying to get accustomed to a much larger parish and all the responsibilities that come with it than the one I had at St. Augustine in Basile. I ask for your prayers and patience while I get acclimated to my new surroundings and responsibilities. I was also named Chancellor of St. Leo-Seton School in addition to my responsibilities here at our Church. I will be very busy between the two entities so please bear with me if I am not as available or accommodating as you would like for me to be. It will take some time for me to get my hands around everything that goes on here and the many things that must be taken care of. I wanted to let you know in case you haven t noticed that I get very enthusiastic when I preach. People in Basile would occasionally ask me if I was mad at them because of my zeal for preaching. Please know that I am not mad at you and that I am just very passionate and excited when I preach. Preaching is one of the things that really moves and inspires me. If anything, when I preach I usually plan my homilies around something I need to hear or work on in my life. We all need to be reminded of God s commandments and to refresh our memories on what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ in the world. As with any new pastor coming in there will undoubtedly be some changes that take place. Every pastor has their own way of doing things, usually influenced by the seminary they attended and the training they received. Be assured that any changes I make are not to offend or show disrespect to anyone. Change is always a source of stress in our lives but when we get used to it so often it really doesn t seem to be as big of a deal that we made it. So as we move forward in a new chapter for St. Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church let us work together to build up the Kingdom of God here on Earth. This is a loving and welcoming parish that is filled with the Light of Christ. Let us keep His flame alive in our lives and in our community. Let us also keep Fr. Gary in our thoughts and prayers as he begins his treatments that God may grant him His grace of healing and curing. Again, thank you for welcoming me so warmly. The procession will take place on Tuesday, August 15, the Feast of the Assumption. The day begins at 8AM with Mass celebrated by Bishop Deshotel at St. Leo the Great Church in Leonville. A cavalcade of boats carrying the Holy Sacrament will then make their way down the Bayou Teche, retracing the steps of our Acadian ancestors, toward St. Martinville. After stopping at Churches along the way for recitation of the Rosary and Benediction of the Holy Sacrament, participants will visit Notre Dame de Perpetuel Secours, St. Martin de Tours Church, and Mater Dolorosa Chapel for Solemn Vespers and Final Benediction. PRAYER FOR HURRICANE PROTECTION O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control. The Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awaken from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season we turn to you, O Loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. 0 Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach heavenly Jerusalem where a stormless eternity awaits us. 7 FRUIT OF THE WORD The seed is the word of God. The agricultural metaphors in all of today s readings give richness to the message that the word of God, cultivated in our hearts, bears much fruit in our lives. Creation itself awaits the redemption of all, even as our bodies await the resurrection. Just as we will rejoice in the fulfillment of God s word, so will all of creation sing for joy in the Reign of God. The word of God is effective and holy; it brings about exactly what it says. It is not futile or empty, but rich in meaning for those who hear and are healed. Those who hear the word of God and keep it will, with all creation, bear much fruit and sing for joy. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Two centuries ago, Archbishop John Carroll worried that Americans would not appreciate the linguistic veil over our worship, and asked that the liturgy in the new United States be in English, not Latin. How did our litugy come to be in Latin in the first place? In the first century, the dominant language in the regions where the church first flourished was Greek. Today in much of the world, almost everyone speaks at least a bit of English. Recently, the European Union even considered making English its official language, a curious proposal since only two English-speaking countries are members. Just as English is a unifying language today, it was hard to function in the ancient world without a smattering of Greek. Even the word Eucharist comes from the Greek for thanksgiving. For a long time, Greek was the language of worship, even in Rome. Slowly, society in the west shifted to a bias for Latin and against Greek. Latin first appeared in public prayer at the end of the second century, in the colonial outposts of North Africa. Soon, Latin became the language of culture, and so as fixed prayer forms were written, they were transmitted in Latin. From Rome and Africa, over the next four centuries, the new liturgical language of Latin spread north to Gaul and Britain. - Rev. James Field, J.S. Paluch Co.
