3 September 9, Back to School (Includes Religion) Our Religious Ed Program directed by Deacon Allan and Anita Modelewski, opens next week. Don t allow your child or grandchild to miss opening day! Kids feel much better when they start at the beginning! Now is a key time for our New Evangelization it s a fancy name for doing things such as finding a way to gently remind friends and neighbors about St. Francis or their own parish religious ed program. Do not be afraid in our culture today your witness is as good as anybody s! So you are casually talking about how the summer went or something about house or family and suddenly you get a download in your spirit I wonder if his/her kids, grandkids are in religious ed this year. Lord give me a way to bring it up quietly but do it now. Evangelization is a big word but it involves simple, basic acts and gestures and humble words. Nothing complicated but it requires faith and courage. You re on the line- claim your dignity and role as a baptized Christian and Catholic and give it your best shot! Celebrating Our Patron Even non Catholics agree about the worthiness of Francis of Assisi to be called a saint. He is universally admired but is he well understood? Here at St. Francis parish we feel the best way to get to know our patron is to celebrate his feast day and the surrounding weeks with style and variety. Check the big insert in today s bulletin! We are planning a series of gala events to capture his spirit. One better than the other! To celebrate his life and magnetic personality we have a fabulous new movie, Clare & Francis, the blessing of animals and the exotic animal show. To celebrate his love of Christ, his Church and the Eucharist, Mass on his feast day will be celebrational! We planned a special informative talk by a Franciscan priest so we might understand more. And finally we include our traditional Pasta Dinner fundraiser to end our celebration in joyful style. Francis, though he fasted much, loved to have a banquet too for him a banquet anticipated the banquet of the Eucharist and finally the banquet of Heaven! Bulletin Reflection The good steward must not show favoritism. The rich may have many material gifts to share, but St. James reminds us in the 2nd reading that God has chosen the world s poor to be rich in faith and inheritors of God s kingdom. Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who show Christ s compassion and mercy by supporting and ministering in homeless shelters and soup kitchens. September 9, 2012 Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time: On September 9, we will celebrate the feast of Blessed Frederic Ozanam, the founder of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Frederic heard the call of Jesus to love and serve those who are suffering. And in the poor he found the face of Christ. In your heart, you also will find the face of Christ as you give your gift to the poor through the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. The Diocese of Rockville Centre Golden Wedding Liturgy Honoring Couples Married Fi y Years or More This fall, couples that have been married fifty years or more will be honored at liturgies on Sunday, September 23 at the Church of Saint Rose of Lima in Massapequa and on Sunday, October 21 at the Church of Christ the King in Commack. Both liturgies will begin at 2:30 pm. Couples may register for ONE liturgy. Registration forms and complete instructions can be obtained at the rectory. Registration must be received by the Office of Worship by Sept. 6th for the September 23rd liturgy and by October 4th for the October 21st liturgy. 8 September 9, Supporting Survivors of Suicide Loss-"After a suicide, those left behyind often wonder if anyone out there really understands."in an effort to offer support and understanding there will be a Suicide Seminar, offered by St. Matthew's Parish, Dix Hills, in conjunction with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). This organization is the leading national not-for -profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education, and advocacy, and to reaching out to people with mental disorders and those impacted by suicide. Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States, and this catastrophic event can strike without warning. The institute for the Study of Religion in Community Life of Saint Joseph s College is presenting the series: Vatican II Revisited: Perspectives from Fifty Years Later.
