3 September 7, St. Francis of Assisi SEVEN REASONS TO BE A RELIGIOUS EDUCATION TEACHER AT SAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI PARISH 1.THE BEST WAY TO LEARN IS TO TEACH. Anyone who has ever been an instructor will tell you that one of the best ways to learn is to teach. While it is important that you have a basic knowledge and grasp of the teachings of the Church before you begin; you aren t expected to have ALL the answers. More than likely, you will discover you learn more that you ever expected. 2.YOUR OWN FAITH WILL COME ALIVE. Spending time helping others (children) fix their gaze on Jesus means your gaze is turned in that direction too. One of the major benefits of being a catechist is prayer and liturgy; even your own relationship with God can become more vibrant and meaningful. 3.YOU BECOME AN ACTIVE PARTICIPANT IN THE CHURCH. What kind of church would our Catholic Church be if the apostolate of proclaiming the Gospel rested only on the shoulders of our Priests, Deacons and Religious? A Religion Teacher bring Faith to full bloom among diverse parish environments and beyond. 4.YOU ASSIST IN BRINGING CHRIST TO OTHERS. This may sound overwhelming, but it is really quite simple. A catechist meets a person in their Faith journey and walks a while with them. In that relationship, God is revealed and the hope of new understanding of the divine is kindled. 5.YOU SHOW YOUR OWN FAMILY THAT YOU VALUE THE FAITH. Taking time out of your life to teach the Faith shows your own children, grandchildren, siblings and family members that you put a high priority on Religious Education. 6.YOU BECOME A ROLE MODEL. Ask young people who their models or heroes are and you ll get a litany of movie and sports stars. While looking good and being athletic are fine qualities, young people need the example of ordinary people who do the right thing. 7.BEING A CHATECHIST BRINGS JOY. Okay, so sometimes it s not easy trying to teach a group of kids about morals when they d rather be playing soccer, but most of the time, being with enthusiastic young people gives you a new energy. 7 September 7, RCIA - What is it? RCIA is a journey of faith. It is a gradual process that takes place within the community of the faithful. It is focused on conversion, whereby the candidates enter into an extended period of formation and conversion through prayer and reflection on Sacred Scripture. It is also a communal journey in which the church community ritually celebrates conversion at various points during the candidate s journey as they pass, so to speak, through another doorway or ascend to the next level. The RCIA is not a program but a sacramental process in which candidates are fully initiated into the Catholic faith. Who is it for? Christian Initiation is for youths and adults who: Want to learn more about the Catholic Church. Attend the Catholic Church with a spouse or loved one, and are not sure about joining, but are open to exploring the question. Are not baptized and want to become Catholic Christians through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. Are baptized Christians who seek full initiation in the Roman Catholic Church through the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. How does it work? God calls and we respond. With the process of Christian Initiation, women and men at all stages of the faith journey come together in a relaxed and informal atmosphere to learn from 7:30 to 9:00 PM on a weekday evening. Volunteer catechists take turns leading sessions regarding Catholic beliefs and practices. A portion of each meeting is dedicated to studying the Scripture readings as well. Throughout the course of the RCIA there are special times of prayer known as rites, when participants receive the prayers, blessing, and support of the larger parish community. Most new Catholics are received into the Church at the Easter Vigil. What is the first step? Contact the parish rectory to learn more about the initiation process.
