Remember, a pilgrimage with Sr. Marcie is a beautiful thing, very special and different from more commercialized tours. Even if you are still on the fence, call us for more information. Time and Talents Commitment Sunday Parishes thrive on committed and contented volunteers. In fact, the real steward is more than a volunteer he offers himself as a gift to the community. Today is Commitment Sunday and we ask our parishioners to fill out the Commitment Sheet and accept a phone call from a contact person in that ministry explaining in more detail what is involved and meshing the program with your schedule. The Booster Club Welcome Back! Soon you will be receiving in the mail a letter about the Booster Club that we are starting here at St. Francis. It s the Good Ol Days All Over Again! Here is a harmless and painless way to enjoy the excitement of a Game of Chance and also help the parish in a significant way. In the company of nearly 100 other Catholic parishes on Long Island, our beloved St. Francis is running in the red on a weekly basis. The Booster Club is an old fashioned yet effective and appealing way to help the picture. Please check the full page notice in this week s bulletin for complete details. I will keep talking it up in this column over the next month or so. Having celebrated my 25 th anniversary of Ordination as a priest last month, I take this opportunity to thank the parishioners of Saint Francis for their prayers and best wishes and other expressions of congratulations on this special occasion in my life. I am appreciative of your kind words and encouragement. I am happy for the opportunity to assist at St. Francis as my time and schedule allow. It is a privilege to offer Mass here and celebrate other sacraments with you. I ask that you continue to remember the seminarians whom I teach and advise. As Catholics, we know that our access to Jesus comes most prominently through the Holy Eucharist. Only a comprehensive remedy will do bring it to St. Vincent de Paul, hold your own garage sale, piggy back a neighbor s sale OR bring the smaller items to St. Francis Grandma s Treasures Attic Sale!! Our lives will be more serene as we learn to let go of various things and persevere with a little less! Bulletin Reflection In today s Gospel, the disciples suggest that Jesus disperse the crowd so that they might individually seek food and lodging. The miracle of the feeding of the 5,000 is Jesus powerful reminder that when we share our gifts in His name, there is always more than enough! VBS will be held in the Parish Hall, Monday thru Thursday from 9:00 AM -11:45AM. Starting on July 12 and ending on July 22. We ask that you please be prompt dropping off and picking up your child. Daily snacks will be provided. The registration fee is $90.00 per child. There will be a $5.00 discount for each additional child in the same family. Please fill out a separate form for each child. Please send your child in with a white tee-shirt on the first day. We are also in need of adult volunteers; there will be a 50% discount for one child if a parent volunteers for the entire two week session. Although it s early in the year we are asking for Parishioners to volunteer to teach in Faith Formation (CCD) in September 2010 It s a rewarding experience to be able to bring JESUS into the children s lives. The 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th Grade Classes are one hour a week From 4:30-5:30 PM. The 7th Grade Class is taught on Tuesday Eve. from 7:00-8:00 PM. You don t need a degree in Theology to teach, just a person who truly believes in our Faith. RETIREE S WELCOME Please call the Faith Formation Office at for more information. RESPECT LIFE NEWS Life in the womb has no voice but yours. Precious lives are at risk. We are supposed to be God s hands and voice. Here on earth there is no greater work to be done. Week after week team members of our St. Francis of Assisi Baby Comer visit families as we bring diapers, wipes, baby food, clothes, and other much needed baby items. We also provide emotional and spiritual support for our moms and dads and precious babies too. To date we have directly assisted over 160 families. The best part of these home visits is meeting and holding the tiny newborn baby just home from the hospital. Our families appreciate all the baby items that you continue to provide for them. We also need more volunteers to make home visits. All who have gone on a baby delivery have found it to be a wonderful experience. With summer approaching and our team members involved with vacation plans, we could use the help of more folks. What does this involve? It is simply meeting us in the St. Francis of Assisi Baby Comer. Our visits average about one to two hours depending upon how many families we visit that day. Transportation is provided from the Church. You may be involved as much or as little as your schedule permits. Please consider joining us to as we visit our moms and precious babies!!! Also, we especially need Huggies, Pampers, and Luv s diapers sizes 4 and 5, unscented baby wipes, baby wash, and stage 2 jars of baby food. 7 June 6, Rummage TIME TO CLEAN OUT YOUR CLOSETS, BASEMENTS AND ATTIC FOR THE St. Francis of Assisi Rummage Sale We are asking for donations of gently used clothing (children, adults, winter or summer), toys, jewelry, housewares, linens, outdoor items or anything else you wish to donate. Please place items in bins labeled rummage sale at either entrance of the Church. All proceeds from the sale will go to St. Francis of Assisi Church. 9 June 6, ST. VINCENT DE PAUL What Happens to Clothing I Donate? The clothing placed in the SVDP bins is hand sorted by our staff. We ensure that only the best clothing is put on hangers, sized and put out in our Thrift Stores. Clothing is available free of charge to clients referred by Vincentian Conferences with a clothing voucher. The clothing is also available at very affordable prices to the public. All excess clothing is sold to vendors who then recycle it for use in other countries where affordable clothing is desperately needed. The income from the excess clothing makes it possible to continue our mission of giving clothing and furniture to those referred by our Vincentians at no cost. NONE of the clothing donated is used as rags! God-United News Peanut Butter and Jelly Gang Update Everyone is invited to join us at our next PB+J GANG Monday June 21st at 6:30pm-8:00pm Why Are Clothing Bins Necessary? Last year we distributed through our Vincentian Conferences over 100,000 pieces of clothing to over 2,800 people. Clothing bins are an efficient way to collect large quantities of clothing donations that we desperately need. We maintain a schedule of clothing bin pick-ups that ensure we collect clothing timely and maintain the bins in a neat condi-tion. A few facts concerning donated clothes to the SVDP Clothing Bins: Last year we distributed clothes to over 2,800 people in Nassau and Suffolk county That s over 100,000 pieces of clothing, FREE Over 35,000 families purchased clothing at our thrift stores at very affordable prices The proceeds from these sales enable us to run all of our other programs 100% of profits received from the collection of clothes goes towards helping the poor This is the largest asset our Central Council in Bethpage has in helping the poor. By supporting our clothing bins, you help accomplish all this and more. The SVDP Society here on long Island was able to provide assistance to over 200,000 people last year. You can be assured that your contribution to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul clothing bins makes a real difference and you can be confident that your contribution will be used effectively and efficiently to help others.
