4 January 27, Pastor s Desk The Holidays are now well behind us and we are all once again catching our breath. Now for an interesting topic! An important part of our financial picture at St. Francis is the Christmas collection. In the good ol days pastors eager to capitalize on the Christmas spirit published the list of givers and amounts in the bulletin! That may strike us today as a bit heavy handed, but it remains important for parishioners to remember their parish as they do family members and charities, in this important season. Our Christmas collection came out to be about the same as the last few years, just over $60,000! Not going up or down! Given inflation, just holding steady doesn t quite do it! Back a generation or so ago, in most parishes on Long Island, the Christmas collection could go right to reserves or the building fund. No longer! Many parishes are now counting on Christmas to get them through periods of low Mass attendance, such as summertime when many are away. We are in that position here at St. Francis. Again, special thanks to all who made a sacrifice to help their parish at Christmas. May your membership and participation in our parish to be distinct blessing in your lives! (Regular Sunday Offertory) January 13th s weekly offering: $7, Last year s weekly offering: $8, Bulletin Reflection The US Bishops pastoral on stewardship reinforces today s reading from 1 Corinthians: Because its individual members do collectively make up the Body of Christ, that body s health and well-being are the responsibility of the members - the personal responsibility of each of us. We all are stewards of the Church. Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who invite a new family in town to supper, actively celebrating a corporal work of mercy as they provide welcome to a stranger. January 27: Third Sunday in Ordinary time In this Sunday s Gospel, Jesus reads the words of scripture: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. In the month of January, through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to assist families by providing food and money for utility and rent, bills, etc. Thank You! 7 January 27, St. Francis along with five other local parishes support and run Trinity Regional School. The school offers a Catholic based education nursery school, pre-k and K-8. The school s programs are fully NYS accredited and include state of the art technology and STEM programs, performing arts programs (including band, choir and theater), middle school sports program, preparation for Catholic high schools, and of course, catholic teachings. The school is the most affordable regional catholic school in the area and more affordable that other nursery and pre-k programs. The school will be having an open house on Sunday January 27 th from 9am 1pm and is just a short 10 minute drive from here. We are enrolling new students and accept transfer students. Additional information will be in this week s bulletin and is available both in the foyers of the Church and on the Trinity website.

8 January 27, Next Sunday is Food Collec on Sunday Baskets will be available at the doors of the church for your contribu ons. Please help to feed the hungry of the parish. Is God Calling You to Grow in Your Spirituality? An open invitation to the men of St. Francis of Assisi: It doesn t matter what age you are: 20,30,40 or older because in our society today, many men cannot find the time in their busy lives to grow in their spirituality. The men s retreat offers a way to spend some special time with other men in growing in our Catholic faith. The retreat begins on Friday, April 5, 2018 at 7:00pm with dinner and prayer and ends Sunday, April 7th after the 11:00am Mass. The retreat offers men a special time and place to experience God s peace and graces in their lives. The retreat is held at the Passionist Retreat House located in Jamaica Estates, all meals are served in the dining room, all retreatants have their own private bedroom, bathrooms are only steps away. If you would like additional information, please call the Retreat House at or George at Hope to see you there! Our shelves are bare. We need your help. When shopping at the supermarket please pick up an item or two for the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry. As a reminder, please check the dates on items you drop off. Donations should be placed in the wooden bin in the Hallway to left of the vestibule. We are unable to take big items, if the item doesn t fit in the bin, please don t leave it. PARISH SECURITY PERSON NEEDED St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church in Melville is seeking a security person, two to four nights a week from Monday to Thursday, 4:00 to 9:00p.m. Responsibilities include ensuring the safety of the building during regular parish activities and locking the facility.
