2 January 12, Mission Statement: St. Francis of Assisi Parish is a Christ-centered family of believers, celebrating Christ alive in our lives through the inspiration of the Gospel, church teachings and traditions and the Sacraments. We are sensitive to the spiritual and temporal needs of God s people, acknowledging their uniqueness and dignity and are dedicated to reaching out and serving them through prayer, liturgical celebrations and social ministries. Guided by the Holy Spirit and nourished by the Holy Eucharist, we welcome all people with, respect and compassion. We are vigilant in protecting the rights of the most vulnerable. In the tradition of our patron, St. Francis of Assisi, we put the good news of the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ into action. 3 January 12, Christmas & A Long Winter Everyone acknowledges that history does not give us the actual birthday of Jesus. What we have is a Christian substitution for a previous winter solstice celebration traditional in Pagan Rome! Yet, there is a providence in all of this. The extra lights of Christmas in fact help us deal better with the dark of the long winter to come! In addition, Christmas really does last twelve days - taking us to Epiphany and the traditional commemoration of the arrival of the Wise Men. So we do not in any way skimp on celebration! Today is the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord and the start of Ordinary Time in our year of blessing the liturgical year. The Capital Campaign Behind the scenes, we are preparing for the public launching of our capital campaign in a few weeks. A representative of the development company (Lynch) and myself have been meeting on a one-to-one basis with parishioners with steady and consistent records of involvement and giving! We are introducing them to the details of our proposals and pointing out the areas where certain changes have been made - all in response to the feed-back we have been getting from Parishioners. At the appropriate time, these items will be presented to everyone in the public portion of the campaign to take place later this winter and into spring! Watch the bulletin and the mail for material about the campaign. The Diocese is on record now as endorsing our proposal! We are expecting not only success in a material way but an opportunity for the Parish to come together as a living community! Medjugorje Pilgrimage Join Sr. Marcie Purpura June 19-27, 2014 $2,899 All Inclusive from NYC Op onal Pre-Tour to Pope Francis & Rome: June 16-20, 2014: Addi onal $1,098 Per Person

4 January 12, Time, Talent & Treasure Fostering Stewardship as a way of life (Regular Sunday Offertory) Last Sunday s weekly offering:$7, /22 Sunday offering:$9, /29 Sunday offering:$14, Thanks for Giving First Fruits & Taking a Step!!! Bulletin Reflection Our Baptism, like the Lord s, is a consecration to service. The bishops pastoral on stewardship reminds us that...there is a fundamental obligation arising from the sacrament of Baptism that people place their gifts, their resources - their selves - at God s service in and through the Church. Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who develop their talents to the fullest in order to use them to benefit church and community through such programs as our own Parish Social Ministry. January 12 The Baptism of the Lord: After Jesus was baptized, he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and a voice was heard This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. As we give to the poor, we also can hear these same words. Have you considered joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that you can live your Baptism more fully? 7 January 12, The way we came to know love was that He laid down His life for us; so we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. If someone who has worldly means sees a brother in need and refuses him compassion, how can the love of God remain in him? Children, let us love not in word or speech but in deed and truth. 1 John 3: RESPECT LIFE NEWS March for Life, Wed. January 22nd, Buses will leave from many points in Nassau and Suffolk to bring participants to the March for Life in Washington, D.C. To find a local bus or for more information call Long Island Coalition for Life at between the hours of 9AM and 7 PM MARCH FOR LIFE-JANUARY 22, 2014 On Friday, January 22, 2014 the annual MARCH FOR LIFE Is to be held in Washington, D.C., and will memorialize the victims of abortion, born, and unborn, on the 41st anniversary of the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion. St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, East Northport, is sponsoring a free, familyfriendly bus trip to participate with hundreds of thousands of other Americans at this peaceful rally to Washington, D.C. on the anniversary of the infamous Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion. Reserve your seat now! Call Please join your prayers to the prayers of those able to be part of the MARCH FOR LIFE. Some pro-life thoughts: I do not hesitate to proclaim before you and before the world that all human life from the moment of conception and throughout all subsequent stages is sacred, because human life is created in the image and likeness of God and when God gives life, it is forever. Pope John Paul II Roe vs. Wade, the court case that legalized abortion was a declaration of war on defenseless baby boys and girls in the womb whose only crime is that they exist. If it be necessary to go against the current of what is sometimes being thought and said on all sides, then let us never grow weary of repeating it-all human life must be absolutely respected; in fact, abortion and euthanasia are murder. Pope Paul VI Our St. Francis of Assisi Baby Corner especially needs Huggies, Luv s, and Pampers diapers sizes 4, 5, and 6, unscented baby wipes, unscented shampoo, unscented baby wash, stage 2 and 3 baby food, and formula, baby coupons, and money for formula. We thank Our Lord through the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Francis for all the blessings bestowed upon our Baby Corner. Need assistance? Wish to join our St. Francis of Assisi Respect Life Committee? Please call our rectory at Intercessions for Life: January 12, 2014 Feast of the Baptism Of The Lord For all baptized Christians: May the Lord grant them the grace to live out their baptismal call with renewed joy and to recognize within this call a need to respect all life from conception to natural death. We pray to the Lord. Word of Life: To be a mother is to nourish and protect true humanity and bring it to development. ~Saint Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein, The Significance of Woman s Intrinsic Value in National Life ) The Life Center of Long Island at Call for help with a crisis pregnancy, healing after an abortion, or to donate baby equipment.
