3 A Message from Father Charles Fink Page 3 October 18, 2015 My dear parish family, About a month ago I was able to report to you that the parish was doing much better financially than it had for several years. Part of the reason for our healthier financial situation is the fundraising we ve been doing. I m happy to say that, barring terrible weather, by the time you read this letter we will have had a very successful golf outing on Oct. 14. Shortly, also, we ll kick off our 2 nd Annual Our Lady of the Snow Raffle. Last year this raffle netted us a profit of $20,000. You ll be hearing more about this year s raffle in upcoming bulletins and in announcements at Mass. We hope to do even better than we did last year. I m happy, too, to be able to announce that we re planning on creating a Memorial Garden by the Blessed Mother s statue in front of the Mother Church. You ll have the opportunity to purchase an engraved stone in memory of a deceased loved one, which with others will become a permanent fixture of our parish. You ll be hearing more about this in the near future. Finally, I d like to encourage those of you who don t use parish envelopes for your donations to consider doing so. Just call the rectory during normal office hours and we ll see that you re on the list to receive envelopes. Why bother? Because they ll serve as a reminder to support your parish each week; because they ll encourage forethought in giving, as opposed to panicky looking for something to drop in the collection basket when it comes around; because if you want us to verify your donation for tax purposes, we ll be able to do so. Think of the parish envelopes as gift wrap for weekly support of Our Lady of the Snow. You might also want to consider signing on to Faith Direct, a program by which you have a set amount of your own choosing debited from one of your bank accounts or credit cards and deposited automatically each week into the Church account. It s a great way to keep up your support of the parish, especially when away on business or vacation. And you can always back out. If Faith Direct appeals to you, call the rectory to sign up. 5 KNOWING OUR FAITH XXXIX. COMMANDMENTS & VIRTUES Frank Sheed once said that the entire gospel could be summed up in these words: God is love; God s law is love. The tenets of the Creed, which we discussed in our first twenty-four lessons, are really so many variations on the first half of Sheed s dictum. God is our Father and Creator, our Redeemer and Sanctifier. He gives us the Church, through which He shares His gifts of truth and life. The latter He communicates through the sacraments we spoke about them in lessons twenty-five through thirty-eight touching and embracing us as He does so. In the end, He gives us eternal life, eternal union with Himself. It might be said, therefore, that the first half of the Catechism of the Catholic Church deals with what God is like and how He loves us. That is what the Creed and sacraments are all about. The second half of the Catechism, built around the Ten Commandments and the Lord s Prayer, deals with how we are to love God and one another. Just as we found that dogmas that appear superficially as cold, sterile abstractions are in fact expressions of God s love, so we will find that the commandments of God are all expressions of how we ought to love God and others. God is love; God s law is love. We are children of God and so should grow up to be like Him. The commandments define what it means to love in specific provinces of our lives. They set boundaries outside of which we may not step without leaving the realm of true love, which is to say, God-like love. The virtues, which are also discussed in the Catechism, are cultivated in order to strengthen our ability to love in the various and often trying circumstances of our lives. Practicing the virtues, obeying the commandments, imitating Jesus and the saints, calling on God s help in prayer, sharing in His life through the sacraments, steeping ourselves in the life and teaching of the Church these form the path to maturing in Christ, to becoming grown-up children of God, to loving as we should. Way back in our second lesson, we quoted St. Paul s first Letter to the Corinthians (13:1-12) on the nature of love. As we proceed with our look at the moral teachings of the Church, it would be wise to review Paul s words, while at the same time keeping in mind St. Thomas Aquinas classic definition of love: To love, said St. Thomas, is to effectively will the good of another.

6 Believing with Joy! Stewardship - A Way of Life Stewardship of Time and Faith For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve This is the cornerstone of stewardship. We live our faith by serving God and serving others. This year over 130 catechists stepped forward to serve the young people in our parish by sharing our Catholic doctrine, Scripture and tradition with them. Some for the first time, others have come back year after year, Every year the Bishop thanks and commends the catechists who have given years of service to Faith Formation. Catechists who have taught Religious Education for 5, 10, 20 and 25 years of service will receive an award from the Bishop. We are happy to present the following catechists who will be honored. To our new Confirmation Candidates, May God bless you as you prepare the Sacrament of Confirmation! Moms and More We are meeting this Thursday, October 22 from 10 to 11 a.m. Join other parents, grandparents, and children for a special hour of activities and conversation. We will have a special guest presenter! Family Mass and Hospitality Barbara Renner, the St. John XXIII Award for 25 years for service! 7 Parish Outreach & Local Events Page 7 October 18, 2015 Parish Outreach News HELP US STOCK OUR PANTRY SHELVES CALLING ALL BAKERS Please remember those in need in our community who struggle to provide food for themselves and their families. We are currently in need of all food items but especially canned meats, tuna, stew, chili, chicken, mayonnaise, tea, coffee, all juices, pancake mix and syrup, pasta sauce, pork and beans, mixed vegetables, spinach, potatoes, carrots, peas, cookies, crackers, paper towels, toilet paper, laundry detergent, baby wipes, and all toiletries, especially shampoo, toothpaste, tooth brushes and deodorant. Food can be dropped off at the outreach office Mon-Thur 10am-1pm or in the food bin outside the pantry door in the foyer of the large church before or after every mass. There is also a drop off bin at the local King Kullen in Blue Point. (located inside the store on the left side of the exit door) and at the Bayport Blue Point public library. Parish Outreach will be hosting our Halloween bake sale after all masses on Saturday October 24 and Sunday October 25th Please would you consider baking a cake, pie, bread, cookies, cupcakes, brownies etc? Please drop off your donated items in the vestibule of the large church before or after any mass. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HELPING US HELP THOSE IN NEED THANK YOU BLOOD DRIVE Our annual blood drive was a great success. We collected 89 pints of blood. Thank you to all the wonderful donors who supported this blood drive and gave others the gift of life!

Adoration begins at 6:00 PM with Rosary at 7:00PM followed by Immaculate Medal Novena & Benediction..???????????DID YOU KNOW?????????? Is the Catholic Church opposed to all stem cell? Not at all. Most stem cell research uses cells obtained from adult tissues, umbilical cord blood and other sources that pose no moral problem. Useful stem cells have been found in bone marrow, blood, muscle, fat, nerves, and even in the pulp of baby teeth. Some of these cells are already being used to treat people with a wide variety of diseases.
