3 A Message from Father Charles Fink Page 3 November 23, 2014 My dear parish family, Next weekend will mark the first Sunday of Advent and the beginning of our four week preparation for the celebration of Christmas. It will be a particularly busy time for the parish, as I m sure it will be for many of you, and I suspect it will be easy for most of us to lose our focus as we run around shopping, writing Christmas cards, planning for family get-togethers, decorating our homes, and so on. I d like to invite you to join me in doing something very simple, but I think very fitting, this Advent season, something that may help us keep focused on the birth that Christmas is all about. Near the exits of the Church next weekend you will find a colorful, foldable little offering box (flat until it s folded) with pictures of babies all over it. When assembled, it will probably remind you of one of those mite boxes usually associated with Lent. What I m going to do is fill it with change this Advent, then around Dec. 20, write a check for the amount I ve put in the box and, along with whatever other offerings we receive, send the money to the Diocesan Respect Life Office for support of the Diocesan Maternity Residences and Services years ago there was no room for Mary and Joseph and their baby anywhere in Bethlehem except in a stable. Through your Advent gift to our Diocesan Maternity Residences, you ll be seeing to it that this Christmas there will be room at the inn for Jesus little sisters and brothers in need. Think about picking up one of the Advent offering boxes next weekend. Make filling it up one of your family Advent projects. Get it back to us by the weekend of Dec. 21, and we will see that it gets to the Diocese. Or, if you prefer, you may send your offering directly to the Respect Life Office as indicated on the Advent offering box. God bless you all and give you a prayerful, peaceful Advent in preparation for a happy and holy Christmas. With love and prayers Fr. Charles R. Fink

6 KNOWING OUR FAITH The Fifteenth Century: Power and Corruption In secular terms, the fifteenth century is known as the Renaissance, an era of spectacular material progress in many respects. It saw the invention of the printing press, which revolutionized communication. It was the age of exploration, bringing, from a European point of view, the founding of new worlds and far-flung trade. Partly because of the depths to which the Church had sunk in the previous century, intellectuals in particular began to look back to ancient Greece and Rome for inspiration. The popes of this century were great patrons of art and literature. Felix VI founded the Vatican Library. The rebuilding of St. Peter s Basilica in Rome was begun. But churchmen grasped at dignities; bribery for clerical appointments was common; and the Inquisition was out of control, participating in, among other things, the execution of St. Joan of Arc. Although this century saw the writing of Thomas a Kempis Imitation of Christ, one of the all-time spiritual masterpieces, it s striking that it fostered and intensely individualistic spirituality, almost as if to suggest that no one was going to get much spiritual help from a worldly and God-forgetful Church. This was the age of the humanists and of pride in human accomplishments. Man was the focus of man s attention, not God. There were prophetic voices crying out against secularism, materialism, and the spiritual superficiality of the age, but these were fighting against the tide. Deserving of mention are St. Bernadine of Siena and St. John of Capistrano, both powerful and eloquent Franciscan preachers who had throngs of people bringing playing cards, wigs, indecent books and pictures into the town squares to be burned in what were called bonfires of the vanities. With the same zeal, but with a fanatical bent, the Dominican Savanarola, had crowds bursting into tears as he prophesied the disasters to come if the Church and her people didn t reform. He turned out to be an able prophet, but his continual attacks on the Pope and the Curia and his ignoring ecclesiastical authority got him first excommunicated and then hanged in the market place of Florence, Italy. It should be remembered in judging Savanarola that most of what he said about Pope Alexander VI was true, and that even St. John of Capistrano was brought before the Inquisition to face charges of heresy. Happily, he was exonerated. Christ s promise to the Church about her survival, and to Peter about his teaching authority, were no guarantee that the Church would flourish always or that the popes would be moral men above the lure of political intrigue. Alexander was elected pope through bribery, led an immoral life, and made most of his decisions based on family and politics. The miracle is that he never officially taught anything contrary to truth in faith and morals. Christ s promises are very narrowly defined, but they are promises nonetheless.

11 A little humor from Father Fink A teenage girl listened to her biology teacher explain that a whale could never swallow a person because its throat was too small. The girl asked, What about Jonah? The teacher said, No way. The girl said, Well, when I get to heaven, I ll ask Jonah if he was swallowed by a whale. The teacher responded, What if Jonah isn t in heaven? The girl answered, Well, then you can ask him.
