4 The Quotable Pope Francis Through his audiences, addresses and homilies, the pope humbly proclaims the Gospel message. Page 4 July 14, th Sunday in Ordinary Time On Ministry & Service God thinks like the Saritan who did not pass by the unfortunate man, pitying him or looking at him from the other side of the road, but helped him without asking for anything in return; without asking whether he was a Jew, a pagan or a Saritan, whether he was rich or poor. He asked for nothing. He went to help him. God is like this. - Audience, March 27 This I ask you: be shepherds, with the odor of the sheep, make it real, as shepherds ong your flock, fishers of men.dear priests, may our people sense that we are the Lord s disciples; may they feel that their nes are written upon our priestly vestments and that we seek no other identity; and may they receive through our words and deeds the oil of gladness which Jesus, the anointed one, ce to bring us. -Homily, Chrism Mass, March 28 Help one another: This is what Jesus teaches us, and this is what I doing and doing it with all my heart because it is my duty. As a priest and a bishop, I must be at your service. But it is a duty that comes from my heart. I love it. -Homily Mass of the Lord s Supper, March 28 Columbia Magazine June 2013, page 17

5 July 2013 Your Faith and Change Sometimes when people point our something that s wrong with us, we can see what they re saying, recognize it as true, but proceed to do nothing about it. We know from experience that insight doesn t necessarily lead us to change, that recognizing the truth doesn t compel us to alter our ways. Particularly when our self-esteem is injured, the truth can have the effect of paralyzing us rather than energizing us to action. Sometimes the prospect of what the change would involve disheartens us. We feel it s too much we re too long in the tooth; we re too set in our ways. Or we re not ready yet. None of us is born again that easily. We all need help and encouragement to leave behind filiar ways that have become destructive. We need help in imagining ourselves differently, and imagining the good effect that will have on others. In all this, we need each other s help and encouragement. To change we need others prodding us on: You can do it! We need to call out the best in each other and rejoice with people in the changes they have made for the better. If our community is to be constantly converted to the Lord, we all have to change. In the words of Blessed John Henry Newman: To be human is to change. To be perfect is to have changed often. PRAYER THE YEAR OF FAITH October 11, 2012 November 24, 2013 Self-Knowledge Excerpt from Matthew Kelly s Book Rediscover Catholicism A Spiritual Guide to Living with Passion & Purpose In the spiritual life, it is very important to grow not only in our knowledge and understanding of God but also in knowledge and understanding of ourselves. Both knowledge of God and knowledge of self are necessary to make the journey of the soul. These two are inextricable links, and one without the other is useless. Confessing our sins in the sacrent of Reconciliation helps us to develop this self-knowledge. The saints hungered for it. They developed it from hours of self-exination and consistent practice of Confession. They knew their strengths and weaknesses, their faults, failings, and flaws, their talents and abilities, their needs and desires, their hopes and dres, their potential and their purpose. They were not afraid to look at themselves as they really were by the light of God s grace in prayer. They knew that the things of this world are passing, and that when this brief life is over, we will each stand naked in the presence of God. At that moment, money, power, status, possessions, and worldly fe will mean nothing. The only thing that has value in that moment is character the light within you. Who we become is infinitely more important that what we do or what we have. As Francis of Assisi once said, Remember, you are what you are in the eyes of God, and nothing else. Get to know yourself. The gifts of self-knowledge include freedom from the world s image of who you are (and who you should be) and an unquenchable compassion for others. The more I get to know myself (and my own brokenness), the more I able to accept and love others. Furthermore, the more I get to know myself and my sinfulness, the more I able to understand others and be tolerant of their faults, failings, flaws, addictions, and brokenness. Self-knowledge breed the ultimate form of compassion. Comfort, we beseech you, most gracious God, all who are cast down and faint of heart idst the sorrows of this world. Grant that by the Excerpt from Rediscover Catholicism A Spiritual Guide to Living with Passion & Purpose, Page 159 quickening power of your For more information on Matthew Kelly, please visit Holy Spirit, they may be lifted up with hope and courage, and be enabled to You showed me that what I said was true, and I was convinced change. 9 Catholics for Freedom of Religion America s 1 st Freedom: Religious Liberty America s religious freedom was assured to all genera ons by the careful cra ing of the 1 st endment of the Bill of Rights. The robust freedom of religion envisioned by the founders has allowed our country to flourish without the religious strife seen elsewhere in the world. Americans were to be forever free to follow their conscience in the service of their God and maintain a morality that would sustain our cons tu onal freedoms. One of our Founding Fathers, John Ads, said, Our Cons tu on was made only for a moral and religious peo- ple. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." As stated by the USCCB: That is our American heritage, our most cherished freedom. It is the first freedom because if we are not free in our conscience and our practice of religion, all other freedoms are fragile. If citizens are not free in their own consciences, how can they be free in relation to others, or to the state? If our obligations and duties to God are impeded, or even worse, contradicted by the government, then we can no longer claim to be a land of the free, and a beacon of hope for the world. You are invited to come together in prayer with fellow Long Island Catholics who understand the peril of this time. The coming months will see the vise that is the HHS mandate tightening around our Catholic institutions a vise that, left unchecked, will crush the life and liberty out of Catholic practices and institutions in a way unimagined by us all. We must pray together that we might stand together in strength and courage with our faith in God and our love of America s freedoms guiding the actions we must take. Thomas Jefferson said, The God who gave us life gave us liberty. These rights of life and liberty are not ours to lose. They were gifted to us by God and conveyed to us by our forefathers. We are this day charged as rightful stewards to defend these rights for future generations. Come together for the closing mass of the Fortnight For Freedom to be celebrated by Bishop Robert Brennan at the Cathedral of St Agnes, Rockville Centre, NY, on July 4 th at 12:10pm. While Americans presume that the Constitution guarantees their rights, in practice our rights survive or disappear based on how firmly we defend them. Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, Philadelphia
