1 Our Lady of the Snow 175 Blue Point Avenue, Blue Point, New York Telephone: (631) May 27, 2018 The Most Holy Trinity Suddenly the Trinity filled my heart full of the greatest joy, and I understood that it will be so in heaven without end to all who come there. The Trinity is God, God is the Trinity. The Trinity is our maker, the Trinity is our protector, the Trinity is our everlasting love, the Trinity is our endless joy and bliss. --Blessed Julian of Norwich Julian lived in the plague-ridden 14 th century and is the author of the first book in English written by a woman, Revelations of Divine Love, which is now considered a spiritual classic. It s filled with beautiful language and simple images describing her personal experience of God. Considering the times she lived in, the joy she exudes is truly remarkable.

3 A Message from Father Charles Fink Page 3 My dear parish family, One of the saddest trials anyone can face in this life is watching a loved-one slowly slip into one form of dementia or another. In the extreme, such a person no longer recognizes friends and family and may even lose all sense of personal identity, for our knowledge and memories form an important part of our sense of identity. If we lose the former, we lose the latter. The dogmas of the Church and our sense of the Church s history help to define our Catholic identity. Ignorant or forgetful of these, our identity slips away until we re indistinguishable from everyone else, which might not be so bad if everyone else had a strong, healthy, wholesome sense of identity; but do they? Is God a Father or an impersonal force, a kind of unfeeling energy, or perhaps a severe taskmaster? Is Jesus the Son of God come into the world to reveal the Father s love and to save us, or is he just another prophet or a wise teacher or maybe something less? Is the Holy Spirit really God dwelling in us and loving us, beckoning us to love in return, or is the suggestion of such divine intimacy with us lowly human beings blasphemous? We recite the Creed at every Sunday Mass and profess our belief in the Trinity God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit not just to know who God is but to remind us of our identity as Catholics. To be dismissive or what the Creed tells us, to think that dogmas are irrelevant or divisive, is to start down the road to religious dementia. It s to forget who we are, and it s sadder than physical dementia because it s freely chosen. The good news is that there s a cure: start treasuring and caring for the gift we ve been given. Make it a priority to know the faith, to grow in knowledge of it, to share it with others, to live it and love it. FORMED.ORG can help. Pick up a FORMED business card by the exits of the church if you don t have one already. It ll tell you how to access the site on your computer, tablet, or smart phone--for free. Begin your journey to a stronger Catholic identity. With love and prayers, Fr. Charles Fink

5 FR. JOHN KEEP: ON PURITY In one of his conferences about preparation for prayer, Fr. Keep suggests that unless we live well we will not pray well. A case can be made for the opposite, it s true, but Father wishes to stress in this instance the importance of purity if our prayer is be all it should be. After all, Jesus himself said, Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God, and if in our prayer we do not exactly see God, we do want to experience his presence, and this is likely to happen only if we are striving in our daily life for purity. Interestingly, Fr. Keep enumerates four kinds of purity that go into making a holy person and a good pray-er. First of all, he says, there is purity of conscience, included in which are two essential elements: our firm intention not to do anything contrary to God s holy will, and peace, rooted in our trust that God has forgiven the sins we have confessed from our past and will always love us in spite of faults of which we undoubtedly will be guilty in the future. Without such a pure conscience, we cannot pray as we ought. Second is purity of heart, which Fr. Keep defines as loving things other than God only in relation to him and as he wants us to love them. It means being so attached to God that we are detached from everything else. The great 19 th century Danish philosopher, Soren Kierkegaard, defined purity of heart as willing one thing. The pure heart is undivided, wanting nothing but what God wants. We usually think of lust as being the major threat to purity of heart, but anything that dominates our attention so as to tear it away from God and his will is inimical to purity of heart. The third kind of purity after which we must strive is purity of mind. St. Teresa of Avila compared the human mind to an ever-grinding mill, cranking out an endless stream of worthless, evil, and distracting thoughts. Fr. Keep counsels us to take St. Paul s advice: Fill your minds with everything that is true, everything that is noble, everything that is good and pure, everything that we love and honor, and everything that can be thought virtuous or worthy of praise (Philippians 4:8-9). These good thoughts will push out less wholesome ones and render our minds increasingly pure. Finally, there is purity of action, not so much a matter of what we do as of the purpose, reason, motive for which we do it. We should act to please God as our primary goal in all things. Fr. Keep concludes: Now is the acceptable time for us to make great strides on the road to God and to that purity of soul which brings us spiritual peace and joy and security. For more Fr. Keep, go to

6 Believing with Joy! Stewardship - A Way of Life The Feast of the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity On this Sunday, the week after Pentecost, we celebrate The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity in the Church. We have celebrated this particular weekend in the Church for more than 700 years. We consider the Holy Trinity to be one of the great mysteries in the Church. It is the mystery of the identity of God. Who is God? God is one God in three Divine Persons the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Whether we are aware of this consciously or not, this is something each of us acknowledges in a number of ways, especially when we go to Mass. Every time we make the Sign of the Cross, we are making a statement about the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. That statement is made often. At minimum it is made when the celebrating priest opens Mass with a sign of the cross. Just prior to the Gospel Reading we do an older version of the sign of the cross by making a small cross on our forehead, our lips, and our chest. The priest concludes the Mass with a blessing, and we all make a Sign of the Cross. There are so many other times before, during, and after Mass when we make the sign or the cross, and there may be other times in our daily lives when we do it. Pope Francis has said, Every time we make the sign of the cross, we draw closer to God. Perhaps we should do it even more often. Next Sunday, June 3rd, we celebrate the Feast of Corpus Christi, or the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ (as it is often called today), which celebrates the institution of the Sacrament of Holy Communion at the Last Supper. Rosary Dates for the Month of June: Monday June 4 Tuesday June 12 Wednesday, June 20 Thursday, June 28 Come join us as we pray for peace in our world and peace in our hearts. All are welcome! We gather at 4:45 PM in the Mother Church. A Children s Video on Formed! Formed has a 24 minute video on the Rosary for Children. In the first part of the video, Brother Francis teaches about our basic Catholic prayers that make up the prayers of the Rosary. The second part teaches the children about the Mysteries of the Rosary and how to use the Rosary. It may be long for some children but you can watch this with your children or grandchildren in two parts. This is a great way to teach our children this powerful prayer. A Family Rosary geared for children is prayed each Wednesday Evening at 7 p.m. in the Mother Church. The Book Group will not meet on Wednesday, May 30th. We will be at the talk by Nancy Giglio who will share with us the story of Fr. Vincent Capadanno from Staten Island who was a chaplain in the Vietnam War. Please join us in the Mother Church Basement to hear the story of this brave priest and recipient of the Medal of Honor! STEWARDSHIP FINANCIAL REPORT For the week of May 20, $ 8496
