I myself have often encouraged the frequent recitation of the Rosary. From my youthful years this prayer has held an important place in my spiritual life. The Rosary has accompanied me in moments of joy and in moments of difficulty. To it I have entrusted any number of concerns; in it I have always found comfort. To recite the Rosary is nothing other than to contemplate with Mary the face of Christ. --St. John Paul II

3 A Message from Father Charles Fink Page 3 October 26, 2014 My dear parish family, As we come to the end of October, I want to make one last pitch for the Rosary. Why am I so keen on it and so relentless in encouraging you to pray it? Because... It s such is a quintessentially Catholic prayer and a great way of fostering our Catholic identity and a Catholic vision of the world. It s a great way of ensuring the basic minimum requirement of daily prayer. Whether we say a Rosary all at once or split up the decades over the course of the day, the minutes it takes to pray it is not a lot to ask in 24 hours. The prayers of the Rosary should be part of every Catholic s vocabulary and can school us in articulating our own spontaneous prayers. The mysteries of the Rosary summarize the gospel. If we re praying the Rosary every day, then each week we re reviewing and reflecting on the life of Christ. The Rosary keeps us in touch with Jesus and Mary. If we re not praying it, how are we expressing our love for them in prayer? The Rosary is very versatile. It can be prayed almost anywhere, anytime: while driving, walking, sitting, kneeling, in church or elsewhere. It can be offered for specific intentions, like peace or healing, for a deceased loved one, for help finding a job--any good thing. It can be prayed individually, in groups, as a family. It s been recommended by saints and popes. Both St. John XXIII and St. John Paul II loved it. So does Pope Francis. It s been requested that we say it by Mary herself in Church-approved apparitions. Give it a try. Stick to it for a month. See if it makes a difference. And if you didn t get the Rosary booklet we distributed at Mass last weekend and would like one, just let me know. With love and prayers, Fr. Charles R. Fink P.S. I lied. This won t be my last pitch for the Rosary. I just can t help myself.

5 Stewardship and Accountability This weekend the Diocesan Stewardship office asks us to take a look at our Accountability: We are responsible for the earth and all that is on it, including: natural resources and living creatures; people in all phases of the journey including the poor, marginalized, unborn, imprisoned, aged, ill and so on. We are especially responsible, too, for the gifts God has placed in our lives, our personal gifts. These include our family and friends; our possessions, homes, clothes, money and food; our health, talents, skills, energy, intellect and time. It is this last area, our personal gifts that we examine today. Accountability prompts us to ask, How well have I stewarded all the gifts I have received? Have I used and shared those gifts in a way that builds up the Kingdom of God rather than tears it down? What steps can I take to become a better steward of what God has entrusted to me? We can become More Accountable by: Discovering and embracing the gifts that God has given us. Examining how we have used our gifts in service to others and seeking to take-a-step further. Making a plan to share our financial and possessions in a responsible manner and put it into action Learning more about our faith and traditions. Being more conscious of the happenings in our lives and making decisions based on our faith and values. Inviting others to re-connect to our Church by sharing our stories and experiences of God. Thank you to all who donated goodies for Hospitality Sunday and to those who joined us for fellowship! Our examination should prove joyful! Yes, there are always areas to improve upon and we may not always live as God intends, but we try...and when we try, we often times succeed! In the above quote from Pope Francis, he exclaims that we should not be men and women of sadness: a Christian can never be sad! Never give way to discouragement! Ours is not a joy born of having many possessions, but of having encountered a Person: Jesus, in our midst. Yes, as stewards we place our gifts and ourselves at the service of others to advance God s kingdom. Even though we stumble, we arise again with great joy knowing that, The Lord never tires of forgiving, it is we who tire of asking for forgiveness. Never tire of seeking God s love and mercy. It is through our relationship with God that we experience true joy! (Pope Francis, March 17, 2013) Our next Hospitality Sunday and Family Mass is November 2 Call Beth at if you would like to donate your time, baked goods or juice. 6 KNOWING OUR FAITH The Eleventh Century: Schism and Crusade The eleventh century saw two saintpopes, Leo IX and Gregory VII, make great strides in reforming the Church and restoring the papacy to a prestige and power it had not enjoyed in over two hundred years. Leo outlawed simony, the purchasing of Church offices with money, and restored the rule of clerical celibacy, which had been largely abandoned in the previous two centuries. Gregory established the principle that the pope was the moral judge even of princes and kings and, in a feud with Henry IV, Holy Roman Emperor, forced him to submit to his decrees. Like his predecessor, Gregory fought against simony, clerical immorality, and lay investiture, which continued to plague the church. It was this century that saw the invention of musical notation by Guido of Arezzo, and it was this century that was blessed by the work of St. Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury, the greatest genius in the Church between the eras of Augustine and Thomas Aquinas. His contributions to philosophy, theology, and the independence of the Church in England from political manipulation were enormous. Many of his works are still in print, and his Prayers and Meditations make excellent spiritual reading. One of the great tragedies of Church history occurred in 1054, the Great Schism between the Eastern and Western Churches, which has never since been healed. It was rooted more in political jealousies and petty bickering over things like whether hosts should be leavened or unleavened bread than it was over substantial doctrinal issues, but a thousand years later the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Rite Churches (Greek and Russian Orthodox, e.g.) are still divided despite the fervent efforts of recent popes to bridge the gap that separates them. Another cataclysmic event occurred at the end of the eleventh century, although it must have looked much different to the people of that time than it does to us. Islam, for more than four centuries, had been spreading and threatening Europe. Europe, though briefly united under Charlemagne, had for centuries been plagued by disunity, immoral clergy, and constant conflict between feudal lords. Their warring had been mitigated by a papal invention, the so -called Truce of God, which declared that fighting must take place only on so many days a week, the rest being subject to the truce. But war was everywhere, and it only got worse. Towards the end of the century Pope Urban II preached the First Crusade. It was a counter-attack against a belligerent Islam, an effort to restore the place of Christ s birth and death to Christian hands, and an attempt to unite Europeans in a common struggle rather than having them spend their energies fighting one another. Amazingly this First Crusade succeeded against all odds, and for a short time Jerusalem was once again a Christian city.

11 A little humor from Father Fink Three elderly sisters, ages 92, 94 and 96, shared a house together. One evening, the 96 year old sister went upstairs to take a bath. As she put her foot into the tub, she paused. Then she yelled down to the other two sisters and asked, "Was I getting in the tub or out?" "You dern fool," said the 94 year old. "I'll come up and see." When she got half way up the stairs she paused. "Was I going up the stairs or down?" The 92 year old sister was sitting at the kitchen table drinking a cup of tea and thought, "I hope I never get that forgetful, knock on wood." She shook her head and called out, "I'll be up to help you both as soon as I see who's at the door."
