3 My dear parish family, Last week I announced that I will be retiring from active parish ministry in June, necessitating the assignment of a new pastor to Our Lady of the Snow. I m not sure yet where I ll be living after leaving OLS, but almost certainly it will be at a parish in Nassau or Suffolk, or perhaps the seminary in Huntington. In any case, I won t be retiring from the priesthood, only from the administrative tasks of pastoring and the obligations attendant on assignment to a specific parish. On April 24, 2019 I ll be ordained 43 years. During that time I ve served seven years as an associate pastor I think they re calling them parochial vicars now at Assumption of the BVM in Centereach, followed by four and a half years at St. Joseph s in Hewlett, same title. Then one evening Bishop McGann called me to say he needed me to go to St. Philip Neri in Northport to replace an associate who was being made pastor elsewhere. Four and a half years later, he called to send me back to St. Joseph s to replace the pastor who was resigning under fire after announcing the closing of the parish school. I wound up overseeing that closing, burying the principal (a Sister who was dying of cancer), having to paying off a $225,000 debt, and spending well over $500,000 on refurbishing the parish buildings that had been let go while the school drained all the parish resources. It was a challenging but happy twelve years. My next assignment was a 10 year hitch as Director of Spiritual Formation in the seminary, eight years in Huntington, two in Yonkers. Bishop Murphy asked me to take the position because no one suitable for the job had volunteered for it. It turned out to be a pleasant break from parish administration and a wonderful opportunity to get to know many fine young men now serving as priests in our diocese, some pastors. In fact four pastors in our deanery (a local sub-section of our diocese) were students while I was on the faculty. In 2014 Bishop Murphy asked me to take over as administrator, then pastor, of Our Lady of the Snow. It s been a good five years for me, but at 72, I m ready to pass the baton on to someone younger. Blue Point is a lovely location. The parish is financially sound. We have a great staff and many wonderful volunteers. Coming here should be an attractive prospect to anyone the Bishop assigns. That said, and barring anything unforeseen, you re stuck with me until late June. God bless and keep you always. With love and prayers, Fr. Charles Fink

5 Our Lady and the Snow By Carrie Gress I grew up in Oregon, close to the Cascade Mountain range. My family had a small cabin in the mountains, and at some point in college I started going there on weekends... I spent hours just walking, listening with attentive ears to the deafening quiet of the snow around me... There is something enigmatic about snow. Often it arrives silently, without ceremony. One scarcely knows it is there. Only over time does it reveal itself. The accumulation brings with it a blanket of beauty. Everything becomes different, suddenly pure, calm, quiet, glistening with wonder. It shouldn t be surprising that Our Lady of the Snow is one of the oldest if not the oldest devotions to the Virgin Mary. Around 350 AD, during the pontificate of Pope Liberius, the Virgin Mary miraculously showed where the Basilica of St. Mary Major should be built by creating a snowstorm in the middle of August. The church was built exactly where the snow fell measured by those who drew the boundaries before the snow had a chance to melt. Miraculous snowstorms notwithstanding, Mary, in her maternal goodness, like all good mothers, performs small, almost indiscernible acts of love without anyone noticing, until there is some accumulation. Even the rosary mimics this snowy pattern. One bead at a time how many lives have been transformed in dramatic ways through those humble whispers?... So while many of us living on the East Coast have contemplated the trouble and inconvenience of two feet of snow, it is good to look, like St. Bonaventure, at the ways creation reflects the goodness of God and in this case, his mother. Excerpted from an article that appeared originally in the Catholic World Report and was subsequently reprinted on Carrie Gress very fine website, It s worth a look

8 Dear Parishioners, RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY Thanks again for your support of the OLS Respect Life Bus to Washington D.C. for the March for Life, We had a very successful day. Our bus included Father Joseph Gaspar, parishioners from several parishes and members of two Knights of Columbus groups. Excellent speeches were given at the rally by Vice President Mike Pence, Jordan Peterson, Abby Johnson and Ben Shapiro, just to name a few. The highlight of the rally, for me, however, was when Alveda King, (Dr. Martin Luther King Junior s niece), led the opening prayer before the March. In regard to the NY State RHA bill that passed on January 22, OLS Respect Life Ministry participated in a protest of the bill at the State Senate building in Hauppauge along with surrounding community groups the week before the vote. In addition, we were in Albany on January 22nd to appeal in person to senator supporters of the bill at the NY State Capitol building, and stand with the NY State Right to Life in protest. I d like to note that the senators who pushed this bill through received stacks of letters in opposition, and phone calls of opposition right up until the last minute of the vote. We were in their offices to witness this. Despite the outcome, rest assured the right to life movement is alive and well in New York. I hope you get involved in our efforts. Loren Christie, Coordinator OLS RLM Our next meeting will be held Thursday, February 7th at 10 a.m. in the cottage. The next Prayerful Presence will be held Saturday, February 9th at 10:30 a.m. on the sidewalk in front of Planned Parenthood on Waverly Avenue in Patchogue. Signs will be provided. Above: March for Life in Washington D.C., 2019, and Jean Delaney speaks to a reporter at a protest of the RHA bill in front of the State Building in Hauppauge. About Our Lady of the Snow Respect Life Ministry This group strives to become God s instrument of life for the parish and local community. Members work to make others aware of the sanctity of all life and to prevent the deterioration of moral values evident in the practice of stem cell research, cloning, abortion, infanticide, assisted suicide, euthanasia, and capital punishment.
