4 A Message from the Administrator Page 4 September 1, 2013 Sunday, September 1, nd Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parishioners, This weekend marks the beginning of the parish s new pastoral year it is also the beginning of the new fiscal year in this diocese. As we begin this new pastoral year, I want to welcome those who have moved into the community (Blue Point and Bayport) and joined our parish. Welcome Sunday takes place on Sunday, September 8th. A warm welcome to those who have been travelling out of state and have returned from vacation. Welcome home. The parish s annual picnic takes place on Sunday, September 15, Please check page 6 for the upcoming calendar of events taking place here this fall. Labor Day Monday, September 2 traditionally marks the end of the Summer season and the return to regular family routines, such as attending school classes and working. See special prayer for workers on page 5. The Year of Faith continues to shape our thinking and activities in this parish. For more information on how you can participate in this important event inaugurated by Pope Benedict last October, see page 11. For those who are new to the parish, we have one page in this bulletin on the Year of Faith with a monthly theme and a new inspiration message each Sunday for you. Until next Sunday, may God s peace be with you. Have a restful Labor Day! Yours Sincerely, Father Jim Drew

5 September 2013 Your Faith and Forgiveness The story is told of a young French soldier who deserted Napoleon s army but who, within a few hours, was captured by his own troops. To discourage desertion, the penalty was death. The soldier s mother was Napoleon s cook, and when she served him supper she pleaded for the life of her son. While Napoleon heard her plea, he pointed out that because of the serious nature of the crime committed her son did not deserve mercy. I know he doesn t deserve mercy, the mother answered. It would not be mercy if he deserved it. Wasn t she a good theologian? That is the point about mercy: nobody deserves it. Everyone deserves justice; mercy, on the other hand, is sheer gift. Mercy shows itself in forgiveness. The act of forgiving cancels out wrongs and transgressions not because a sparkling defense has been found, but because that is the gracious response of the person who is grieved. Mercy does not suggest that the guilty are not guilty; it recognizes the wrongdoings but doesn't demand satisfaction for the wrong. When Jesus challenges his disciples to forgive others, even when they offend seven times in one day and say seven times that they re sorry, the disciples respond, Increase our faith! (Luke 17:5). We need a strong faith if we are to forgive others as readily as Christ forgives us. PRAYER Lord, for your tender mercies sake, lay not our sins to our charge, but forgive us all that is past. Grant that we may never presume upon your mercy, but live as those who have been forgiven much. Make us compassionate towards one another, and grant that we may show forth in our lives your enduring love, through Christ our Lord. Source: Your Diary for the Year of Faith Author: Dennis McBride CSsR Used with Permission of the Author 11/12/12 THE YEAR OF FAITH October 11, 2012 November 24, 2013 For those who recently joined our parish, here is how you can participate in the Year of Faith Copies of Matthew Kelly s book Rediscover Catholicism are available in the parish office. To join the study group, call Beth at On this observance of Labor Day, Monday September 2, 2013, we recognize the importance of human labor and the dignity of human beings who labor for the support of their families. We are also mindful of those who are unemployed. Here is a prayer for all workers. Blessing Of Workers Blessed are you, Lord our God, Creator of the universe and Father of humanity. We praise you for your mighty works and for the wonders of your love. Hear our prayers today and grant your blessings to all workers. Let our work contribute to the good of all members of this community and to your glory for ever and ever. Amen. - Blessings and prayers for Home and Family Forgiveness is the economy of the heart: it saves the expense of anger, the cost of hatred, and the waste of spirits. Hannah More

Next weekend, September 7-8, is the National Collection for The Catholic University of America. Every dollar given directly supports financial aid for students from dioceses across the country, including our diocese. Please be generous. Living Stewardship We can hear God speaking to us today in the words of the father to his elder son: You are with me always, and everything I have is yours. What is my response to such remarkable generosity? Do I give joyfully and generously as God gives to me? Campus Ministry - Building a Community of Faith, Service and Friendship As students begin college, spirits are high. They are eager to take classes in their major, excited to invest themselves in worthy causes, and ready to take on the challenges of leadership. But as they grow in these areas, they may still experience hardships confusing new relationships, homesickness, struggles with studies and they may realize that while they packed all their favorite music and dorm items, they left their Bible and faith life at home. When this happens, the Catholic Campus Ministry of the Diocese of Rockville Centre steps in and serves over 50,000 students on Long Island; so their hearts, minds, and souls can be developed during the critical years of their formation. One Catholic Campus Minister explains, My goals as a campus minister are to continue to evangelize, to reach more students on campus, and to bring the Gospel message in a way that engages them, [so] that they can understand that while they re studying, they re on the road to Heaven. The goal in life is to become a professional in whatever capacity, but also to go to Heaven. Without Campus Ministry, there would be a huge gap in the faith lives of the college students on Long Island. When you support the Catholic Ministries Appeal, you support the faith lives of hundreds of students at secular universities across our Long Island community. Prayerfully consider supporting Catholic Campus Ministry by making a pledge today through the forms provided in church or visit to make an online donation.

8 Parish Outreach & Local Events Page 8 September 1, 2013 Parish Outreach News Our food pantry and Outreach Program are busier than ever! 99 households came to our food pantry for assistance with food in the month of July. This is a sharp increase in prior years! In July 2012 we helped 62 households In July 2011 we helped 56 households In July, we also assisted with 332 other services. These included advocacy, budgeting, clothing, transportation, health care, employment, utilities, housing, case management and information and referrals to other agencies and organizations. On Thursday, August 8th a representative from The Long Island Cares Food Bank came to our food pantry to conduct a survey for FEEDING AMERICA. Our food pantry participants were very eager to participate in this anonymous survey. They answered questions about the root causes of their need for food assistance. As we continue to meet the need of the growing number of people who come for assistance, we thank you for all your help. Your donations of food, gift cards, back to school supplies and financial support are a great source of comfort to those in need. The mountain of Sinai carries a message of the majesty and distance of God, while Jesus presence as host of the banquet speaks of intimacy and mystery. September s shadow calls us all to mindfulness as we prepare to return to life outside of summer. The Christian life holds these two places of knowledge of God in careful balance. Even in the accounts of the Passion we see the table of the upper room in balance with the Mount of Olives. Altar means high place, yet it is also a table. The former liturgy of the Latin Rite began with the priest bowing at the foot of the altar s three steps, chanting Introibo ad altare Dei, or I will go to the altar of God, followed by the altar servers response, The God who gives joy to my youth. Many parishioners can recall and recite this scene by heart. As with so many things in liturgy, there are layers of meaning in our worship. The altar table evokes memories of the high places once reserved for encounter with the holy, and the intimacy of the table where hospitality draws us to share food and drink.
