1 175 Blue Point Avenue, Blue Point, New York Telephone: May 13, 2018 Seventh Sunday of Easter MAY IS MARY S MONTH There is a ninth Beatitude that we can add to those proclaimed by Our Lord: Blessed are the souls that have entrusted themselves to the Blessed Virgin; their names are written in the Book of Life. St. Bonaventure ( ) Second generation Franciscan, elected head of the Order as a young man, contemporary and friend of St. Thomas Aquinas, Bonaventure is a Doctor of the Church, one of her greatest theologians and mystics, and as this quote indicates, representative of the profound Marian devotion that has characterized genuine Catholic practice for centuries. 3 A Message from Father Charles Fink Page 3 My dear parish family, Americans have the reputation around the world of being unusually blunt and undiplomatic, even more so if they happen to come from New York. In this respect the Australians are at least our equals. The great Frank Sheed, matchless expositor of our Catholic faith and a native of Australia, used to say that most Catholics he was talking about the good ones who actually try to practice their faith go through Mass in a pious coma. It happens to the best of us, routine being the enemy of attention, and so I thought it might be worthwhile to offer some guidelines for more alert participation in our weekly worship. 1. Arrive ahead of time for Mass; get seated; pray and prepare yourself for what is about to happen. 2. Don t leave Mass before the final hymn is sung, certainly not before the priest has reached the door. It s rude and insulting. 3. When entering the church, we genuflect towards the tabernacle if the red sanctuary candle is lit; it indicates that the Blessed Sacrament (aka Jesus) is present there. Before the altar we bow, a bow being sufficient before the tabernacle if physical infirmity makes genuflecting difficult. One or the other should be done when entering and leaving the church. 4. Use the restroom before coming to church. In an emergency, not to take a break from Mass, use the church restrooms, but if you do so, walk around the back of the church, and don t walk at all during the consecration when the priest is repeating the words Jesus said at the Last Supper and everyone is kneeling. 5. Think about what you re doing as you receive communion. Receive thoughtfully and reverently. Don t grab the host as if it were a cookie or cracker. 6. Take home a bulletin each week; read it and share at least highlights with family, friends, neighbors, co-workers. 7. Don t leave bulletins around the church. Do put hymnals, missalettes, and laminated prayer-cards back where they belong, not strewn all over the place. 8. Why anyone needs a cell phone at Mass is a mystery to me, but if you can t live without one, turn it off. A sign of pious coma: We remind everyone to turn off cell phones at the beginning of every Mass, but still they go off. Let s all work to make the Mass as prayerful and beautiful as possible. With love and prayers, Fr. Charles Fink

5 FR. JOHN KEEP: ON HOLINESS Pope Francis latest Apostolic Exhortation, Gaudete et Exsultate ( Rejoice and be Glad ), is a beautiful meditation on God s call to each of us to be holy. You may access this Apostolic Exhortation on your computer, tablet, or smart phone. Pope Francis thoughts on the Beatitudes are especially worthwhile. Below, continuing our series by Fr. John Keep, are some of Father s thoughts on holiness. If you read books on the subject of getting holy, some of them give you the impression that the path to holiness is very complicated and very difficult. Now it seems unlikely that our merciful and gentle and understanding Lord would have commanded us to do something very complicated and very difficult in calling us to be children of God. One does not give children anything very difficult or very complicated to do in important matters, and the members of God s kingdom are childlike... Holiness is easy, and union with our Lord is easy. The truth is that Christ Himself is our light, our life, our holiness... The secret of holiness and union with Christ is to expect and seek it from Him and not from ourselves... There are a number of different ways of summing up what is required in order to become holy. Sometimes it is described as the imitation of Christ. Sometimes it is described as abandonment to the will of God. It can be described as living out of love for God, through and with and in Christ. But however one describes it, the only way to be holy is to be like our Lord, to have the same effective, all-embracing desire as He had in life. And it is very simple. Our Lord s ruling passion, if we may so call it, was to do the will of the Father. He always did God s will. He always did what pleased the Father. When we look at all the mysteries of our Lord s life on earth, we see how the Father s will is done in all circumstances, and we learn how to do it ourselves. Any person who willingly does the will of God is doing a holy thing. If a person habitually does the will of God he is a holy person. The trick is to see all of life, every one of its countless little choices and decisions from the point of view of doing God s will. Once this is grasped and practiced, then everything, from the great temptations to the little courtesies, from the accidents and illnesses to the petty annoyances, will begin to change complexion. All will be seen as an invitation from God to do His will. When you do God s will, even in little things, you have Christ doing it in you... As long as we do God s will, we do not need personal holiness, for Christ is our holiness, the light of our life.

6 Believing with Joy! Stewardship - A Way of Life THE PRAYER OF POPE FRANCIS FOR MARY Virgin and Mother Mary, You who, moved by the Spirit, have received the Word of life in the depth of your humble faith, totally given to the Eternal, help us to say our yes in urgency, more imperative than ever, to make the Good News of Jesus resound. Obtain for us now a new resurrected ardor to bring everyone the Gospel of life that conquers death. Give us the holy audacity to look for new ways so that the gift of beauty that does not go out will reach everyone. Star of the new evangelization, help us to shine in the witness of communion, service, ardent and generous faith, justice and love for the poor, so that the joy of the Gospel reaches the ends of the earth and no periphery is deprived of its light. Mother of the living Gospel, source of joy for the little ones, pray for us. Amen. Thank you to all who participated in the Crowning of Mary last Sunday! This is a sacred tradition that signifies our devotion and love to Mary, Mother of Jesus, and Mother of the Church. O Mary we crown thee with blossoms today, Queen of the Angels and Queen of the May Thank her for the depth of her love. - 1 Peter 4:8 The Sisters of St. Dominic of Amityville Celebrate Annual Luncheon Join us on Friday, June 29, 2018 as the Sisters of St. Dominic of Amityville host their 17 th Annual Beauty of the Spirit Luncheon at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, NY. An earlier discussion had led to an argument and neither of them wanted to concede their position. As they passed a barnyard of mules, goats, and pigs, the husband asked sarcastically, Relatives of yours? Yep, the wife replied, in-laws.
