3 My dear parish family, We ve got a way to go before the beginning of Lent (March 6), but I want to let you know about one of the special programs we ll be implementing during that holy season. Sister Josephine Daspro of the Brentwood Josephites has been involved in spiritual direction and the training of spiritual directors for a long time. She has put together a cadre of them who make themselves available during Lent to lead individuals on a one-on-one private retreat experience. Here s how it works. You fill out an application form, available at the rectory, and send it to the address on the form. You ll be assigned a spiritual director with whom you ll meet once a week during Lent right here at Our Lady of the Snow. You ll speak to your director, be assigned daily readings on which to reflect, and discuss your prayer experience next time you meet. An offering of $20 - $40 dollars a week is suggested, depending on your financial circumstances. All of this is explained in more detail on the reverse side of the application sheet and in brochures available at the rectory. If this sounds like something you might be interested in, or if you have any questions, feel free to speak to me, or stop by the rectory during normal office hours to pick up an application/ information form. 5 FR. JOHN KEEP: ON OUR CALL TO BE PROPHETS As we go through life, we tend to form an idea of ourselves and our chief role or particular function in the world. I think it is unlikely that many of us think of ourselves as God s prophets. Yet it is a fact that any active Catholic shares to a certain degree in Our Lord s roles as Priest, Prophet, and King. The rite of baptism makes this clear when we are made Christians. As Christ was anointed Priest, Prophet, and King, so may you live always as a member of his body, sharing everlasting life. To some degree then we are all prophets. Now a prophet is not just someone who speaks about the future, although that is one aspect of the prophet s work. We can, each of us, speak to an unbelieving world about things to come, about death and judgment, heaven and hell, but a prophet s main work is to speak in God s name, to spread God s message abroad, to echo more widely the words of God. We all have the duty, to some extent at least, to spread God s truth, and if we never do so at all, then we are failures as Christians. After all, since baptism, and still more after taking part in the Eucharist, we live and speak and act in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. We should feel that in some way we are transmitters of our faith. There is an amazing lack of faith in the world today. Even many Catholics have very little faith, and many play with false ideas. So there is a great need for true prophets, each making his or her own small or great contribution as God s truth is echoed into the world by the faithful members of the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. Let us be true prophets of Our Lord, with courage and with humility, and let us not be afraid of being criticized and despised because of our wonderful faith. If we do not profess our faith, we may lose it, or we may become false prophets, as those who know us to be Catholics hear us say and see us do things that are not God s will. One test of the genuineness of our prayer is to see whether it makes us prophets, whether our lives echo and shine forth the truth of God, showing God s truth by being what we really are in His sight, and by speaking out the truth whenever it is called for. 7 ******AN IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT***** Come this June, Father Fink will be retiring from active parish ministry, which means that Our Lady of the Snow will be assigned a new pastor. You are invited to fill out a questionnaire concerning the needs of the parish and your vision of the qualities the new pastor should bring to his work. Your comments will be taken into account by Bishop Barres, the Clergy Personnel Office, and the Priest Assignment Board. 8 RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY It seems to me as clear as daylight that abortion would be a crime. - Mahatma Gandhi The Respect Life Ministry wishes to thank you for your very generous support of our bus trip to Washington D.C. to participate with the Diocese of Rockville Centre in the Annual March for Life. We raised over $1,250 the weekend of Jan. 13th. Upcoming Event: A Baby Bottle Campaign Fundraiser for The Life Center of Long Island will take place in our parish in February. Details will follow in upcoming bulletins. Thank you for your support of our first annual 2018 Maternity Advent Project. We raised $146 in change for DRVC sponsored maternity homes throughout Long Island. About Respect Life Ministry Our next meeting will be held Thursday, February 7th at 10 a.m. in the cottage. The next Prayerful Presence will be held Saturday, February 9th at 10:30 a.m. on the sidewalk in front of Planned Parenthood on Waverly Avenue in Patchogue. Signs will be provided. This group strives to become God s instrument of life for the parish and local community. The Encounter is a three-day, FREE cultural event organized by members of Communion and Liberation featuring panel discussions, artistic performances and unique exhibits.
