3 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 September 15, 2013 Catechetical Sunday September 15, th Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Parishioners, On this Sunday, we recognize all parents/adults from the parish who offer their time and talents to be catechists/religious Education teachers in our parish s Faith Formation Program, Grades K-9. During the four weekend Masses we will pray for them and ask God to bless them in this important service to the 687 families participating, and the children in each class whom they teach the essentials of the Catholic faith. There will be a commissioning ceremony for those assuming this teaching ministry at every Mass. Mrs. Patricia Bartoldus is the Director of the parish s Faith Formation Program, Grades K-9. She recently completed her Masters Degree in Religious Education at The Immaculate Conception Seminary. Congratulations Pat! The Director of this program is assisted by 2 coordinators Charlotte Logan and Susan Gressler. These are two paid part time positions, 17 1/2 hours weekly. I am grateful to the 10 Coordinator volunteers and the other parishioners in our large parish program. On Catechetical Sunday, we also pray for the families who are registered for this year s program, which begins at the end of September. Today we lift up a special prayer to all the Catholic parents involved, in this endeavor you made promises to God on the day of your children s baptism to bring them up in the Catholic faith. Your presence at Mass with your children and your decision to participate in the parish s Faith Formation is a confirmation to us to follow through on that promise. Those parents, your spouses who may not be Catholic, please know you are very welcome to our Catholic Community. Your presence at Mass is great and your support of your Catholic spouses as they assume their Catholic responsibilities to your children is much appreciated by me. Obviously, sharing your own faith in God with your children will enrich them. Building and sharing interfaith family traditions in your families will help each family and your children to live their Catholic faith in a multi religious society. We lift you all up in prayer at our Masses this weekend. May God who began the good work in you bring it to completion. (Philippians 1:6) Yours gratefully, Father Jim Drew Next Sunday s Second Collection goes to support the St. Pius X Diocesan Priest Retirement facility, located at Dominican Village, Amityville. Envelopes are available near the church s entrances for those who did not receive them in the mail.

4 September 2013 Your Faith and Forgiveness The story is told of a young French soldier who deserted Napoleon s army but who, within a few hours, was captured by his own troops. To discourage desertion, the penalty was death. The soldier s mother was Napoleon s cook, and when she served him supper she pleaded for the life of her son. While Napoleon heard her plea, he pointed out that because of the serious nature of the crime committed her son did not deserve mercy. I know he doesn t deserve mercy, the mother answered. It would not be mercy if he deserved it. THE YEAR OF FAITH October 11, 2012 November 24, 2013 The Evangelization We Need Fr. Ronald Rolheiser, OMI Part II The Challenge Before Us We need to work at trying to re-inflame the romantic imagination inside our faith. We need to find ways to get people not just to know their faith but especially to fall in love with it. Before we can do this, we need to fall in love with our faith. We need to become people of daily prayer, to really get to know Christ in Scripture and the sacraments. We need to recognize that we are among the evangelized who need to be evangelized talk about a long, uphill struggle. We need to appreciate the need for both catechesis and theology, focusing on teaching the essentials of our faith and on trying to make intellectual sense of it. Evangelization is impossible if we do not permit questions or if our answers are indefensible or spoken without love. We need to appeal to the idealism of people, particularly the young. We need to let the beauty of the Gospel speak to the beauty inside people. We need to remain widely Catholic in our approach. This requires a multiplicity of approaches. Our faith reflects God s heart and is a house with many rooms. We need to evangelize beyond any ideology of the right or the left. We need to build bridges, build communion. We need, today more than ever, to bear down on the essential of respect, charity and graciousness. Cause never justifies disrespect. We need an evangelization that works at winning over hearts, not hardening them. Wasn t she a good theologian? That is the point about mercy: nobody deserves it. Everyone deserves justice; mercy, on the other hand, is sheer gift. Mercy shows itself in forgiveness. The act of forgiving cancels out wrongs and transgressions not because a sparkling defense has been found, but because that is the gracious response of the person who is grieved. Mercy does not suggest that the guilty are not guilty; it recognizes the wrongdoings but doesn't demand satisfaction for the wrong. When Jesus challenges his disciples to forgive others, even when they offend seven times in one day and say seven times that they re sorry, the disciples respond, Increase our faith! (Luke 17:5). We need a strong faith if we are to forgive others as readily as Christ PRAYER forgives us. Ronald Rolheiser, OMI, is a president of the Oblate School of Lord, for your tender Theology in San Antonio, Texas. His books are popular throughout mercies sake, lay not our sins to our charge, but the English-speaking world, and his weekly column is carried by more forgive us all that is past. than seventy newspapers worldwide. 5 Parish Stewardship Page Ministry Report CATECHISTS Catechists are parishioners who are called to proclaim Jesus and the teachings of the Church. Our Lady of the Snow has 130 catechists who strive to bring all parishioners into a closer relationship with Jesus through Word, Worship and Service. Stewardship Tip All good things begin with prayer. Start and end each day with a simple thank you for the blessing you received. You may have to really look for the blessing but they are there! Stewardship Financial Report Weekly Offering Week of Stewardship Witness My name is Laura Buckheit. Through learning and then teaching our Catholic faith at this sacred space, Our Lady of the Snow for 5 years, I've had the privilege of serving young people by opening their minds to the voice of God that exists within us. By aligning our lives with Jesus and Church teaching, we practice daily the skill of deep listening, understanding, learning, forgiveness and offering compassion to anyone we come in contact with, because these are tools of mindful Christian living. Maintenance Report From top to Bottom! Our Large Church is looking good, our maintenance staff has spent many hours cleaning and polishing the floors. Doing it themselves has saved us $2,000. A new roof was put on the Large Church, our storm insurance covered $48,000 of the $51,000 cost. We also had out of the pocket cost of storm related repairs of $5,000. Collection Sept 7-8 Envelopes $5333 Loose checks and cash $2144 Total $7477 Faith Direct Totals will be included in the monthly report See our website for more information on how to enroll in Faith Direct Service Report Our New Envelopes are from Our Sunday Visitor! This was a cost saving change. Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all stewards in our parish who give not because they possess a lot and can afford it, but rather because of a desire to share what they have with others.

8 A Special Message Page 8 September 15, 2013 Catechetical Sunday May the Church be a place of God s mercy and hope, where all feel welcomed, loved, forgiven, and encouraged, the Church must be with doors wide open so that all may enter. And we must go out through these doors and proclaim the Gospel!! (Pope Francis, General Audience Address in St. Peter s Square on June 12, 2013) Dear Parishioners, A Message From the Office of Faith Formation Our Lady of the Snow This weekend is Catechetical Weekend. On this weekend the Church will celebrate those people who have heard the call to proclaim the Gospel by stepping forward to be catechists. Our catechists will be commissioned and blessed at all the Masses this weekend. The theme this year is Open the Door of Faith. This theme is taken from the Acts of the Apostles. And when they arrived, they called the church together and reported what God had done with them and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles. Acts 14:27 Here at Our Lady of the Snow we have a large Faith Formation Program for our children. Fr. Drew has asked that I give you some information about our program so that you the parish may have a better understanding of the program. We ask you to look at the information on the following page and then keep all the people involved in this ministry (parents, grandparents, students, children, catechists, coordinators, monitors and staff) in your prayers during this coming catechetical year. Know that we will continue to keep all of you in our prayers. May we all heed the words of Pope Francis to go through the doors of faith and proclaim the Gospel to everyone we meet, in everything we say and do. Yours in Christ, Carrie Logan,CRE Susan Gressler,CRE Pat Bartoldus,DRE
