1 Our Lady of the Snow 175 Blue Point Avenue, Blue Point, New York Telephone: July 29, th Sunday in Ordinary Time For the believer life is a journey, a road laid out for us by the providence of God and guided by the divine law and the teaching of Christ. Human life can be considered the intersection of our personal thoughts and deeds with the mysterious workings of Divine Providence. Together these two elements form our existence. Fr. Benedict J. Groeschel, C.F.R. Fr. Groeschel ( ) was described by his eulogist as a faithful son of the Church, loving father of the poor, ardent preacher of the Gospel, dedicated follower of St. Francis. If you didn t know him, A Friar s Tale, a short biography by John Collins, filled with delightful quotes and anecdotes, will introduce you to him. A dozen or more of Fr. Benedict s books can be purchased from Amazon.

3 My dear parish family, I know I ve recommended the free app LAUDATE on a number of occasions before. By tapping it you can access daily prayers of all sorts, as well as podcasts of the Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet. This is a great blessing for those who are new to such prayers or who just prefer to pray along with someone rather than alone. There s another free phone app I came across recently that some of you might be interested in. It s called Relevant Radio and it s a good source of radio podcasts, lots to choose from, one in particular I d recommend for serious pray-ers or regular Mass-goers looking for some solid and fairly extensive reflections on the daily and Sunday Mass readings. It s called In Conversation with God, based on a series of books by the same name, and it s the first podcast listed after you tap the Relevant Radio app. The books are excellent too, but if you d prefer to listen to them rather than read them, this podcast is for you. I confess I find the reader s voice and delivery less stimulating than I d like I imagine many of you would say that of me but the material is very good. To listen regularly is to be schooled in the scriptures and the teachings of the Church and to be given much food for thought and prayer. So check out the Relevant Radio app and listen to a few segments of In Conversation with God. You may stick with the podcasts, or you may decide, based on you re listening, that you d like to own the very attractive little seven volume series of books by the same title. Listened to or read, they make an excellent spiritual companion. There are few things as worthwhile or beneficial as daily spiritual reading (or listening), so if not In Conversation with God then try something else. We re talking about soul-food here, and we all need it to stay spiritually healthy and strong. With love and prayers, Fr. Charles Fink

5 FR. JOHN KEEP: ON STRUGGLES OF FAITH The gift of faith is a pearl of great price, and if the noisy brilliance of the world in which we live seems to outshine it, we ought to take warning. God s darkness is better than this world s brightest light. It would be cheap at the price if we bought the gift of faith with the loss of everything else on earth. This is why the saints, suffering the most appalling feelings of desolation or dryness in religious matters could be filled with delight. They knew Jesus was with them, even if hidden. They knew that such a state was a perfect setting for a very strong exercise of faith. It is a virtue which needs exercise like all virtues, and the more often and more strongly we make acts of faith and act according to faith, the stronger and more vivid it becomes. Faith gets weaker if we let it grow less frequent and less deliberate in its expression in our lives. It is always under attack from the devil, and also from the non-christian world with all its immodesty and unbelief. God is very fond of faith. He loves perseverance. He is more pleased with a real effort to please Him than He is with any amount of effortless success. So we ought to be glad and thank God for strengthening us when our prayer goes well, but we ought to thank Him still more for giving us the faith to keep trying when it goes badly. We can give God great glory and show great love for Him better than ever, although we do not feel it when everything seems empty and dry. When we go to prayer we go to please God, not to please ourselves, and that being so, we ought to be delighted with whatever God gives us in the way of prayer. If we have persistent distractions which we keep putting away as they keep coming back, then that is God s gift of a little battle for us to fight. Let us fight it calmly and cheerfully and not think we are being wicked or that prayer is a waste of time. It is quite possible, by being faithful, to grow so strong in faith that we actually come to be pleased when our feelings make things difficult. There is a special joy and delight about exercising our faith, but it is an acquired taste. We are destined to have some sorrows and troubles and perplexities in this world, but our precious faith is a gift from God, and it has God s guarantee on it. You can trust it no matter what happens. It tells you all is well as long as you want God. For more Fr. Keep:
