A PRAYER FOR WORLD YOUTH DAY JULY 25-31, KRAKOW, POLAND God, merciful Father, in your Son, Jesus Christ, you have revealed your love and poured it out upon us in the Holy Spirit, the Comforter. We entrust to you today the destiny of the world and every man and woman. We entrust to you in a special way young people of every language, people and nation. Guide and protect them as they walk the complex paths of the world today, and give them the grace to reap abundant fruits from their experience of the Krakow World Youth Day. Heavenly Father, grant that we may bear witness to your mercy. Teach us how to convey the faith to those in doubt, hope to those who are discouraged, love to those who feel indifferent, forgiveness to those who have done wrong and joy to those who are unhappy. Allow the spark of merciful love that you have enkindled within us to become a fire that can transform hearts and renew the face of the earth. Mary, Mother of Mercy, pray for us. Saint John Paul II, pray for us. Saint Faustina, pray for us. --Fr. Peter Cameron, O.P. (in the July Magnificat)

3 A Message from Father Charles Fink Page 3 My dear parish family, In Book III of Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis argues that the moral life consists of three essential elements. First, there is fair play and harmony between people. This would include what nowadays we would call social justice. Second, there is tidying up our inner life; internal harmony, we might call it, cultivating virtues like purity, patience, prayerfulness, etc. Lastly, says Lewis, we need to know the purpose or goal of life if we are to live rightly. To make this clearer, and this is one of Lewis great gifts, he draws two analogies, the first a fleet of ships. He says that for the fleet to maneuver successfully, the ships must have the wherewithal not to collide. Each must be in good working order. And they must know where they are going. His second analogy is that of an orchestra. To play aright, he says, all the instruments must play in harmony. They must each be tuned and maintained. And they must know what song they are going to play. The problem with the modern world, Lewis argues, is that it wants everyone to get along and live in harmony without reference to internal goodness or the purpose or goal of life. Morality has been reduced to only one of its three elements. We are here by chance for no particular purpose, our only goal to be comfortable and to enjoy ourselves. In the pursuit of that goal we can do anything we like so long as we don t hurt anyone else. But hurt is understood only in the crassest sense. If I wreck someone s life by introducing him to drugs, well that s his fault for using them irresponsibly. If I get some girl pregnant after getting her drunk, well she can always get an abortion, so no one got hurt. This superficial, selfish vision of morality has affected every aspect of our lives: family, business, politics, economics, even religion. We expect beautiful fruits from diseased trees. We think we can solve the problems of violence and hatred in our society and the world by singing All we need is love without facing up to the fact that half the betrayals in the world are perpetrated in the name of love. That s because love comes in several varieties, the only one that will save us being Christ-like love, which is to say, selfless, sacrificial love that serves others and strives after personal purity and integrity. It doesn t come naturally. It isn t easy. It often means foregoing pleasure and comfort. It involves, as Jesus taught, taking up a cross each day, because it doesn t come without the ego being crucified. If you ve never read C.S. Lewis, give him a try. For fiction: The Screwtape Letters or The Great Divorce. For non-fiction: Mere Christianity or The Abolition of Man. And pray for our country, our Church, and the world. With love and prayers, Fr. Charles Fink

5 WHAT CATHOLICS BELIEVE; WHY THEY BELIEVE IT 7. J.R.R. TOLKIEN & THE PROBLEM OF EVIL One of the best and most profound books I ever read was called The Meaning of Evil by Charles Journet. Unfortunately for most readers, Journet, like his dear friend Jacques Maritain, used a vocabulary borrowed from medieval philosophy that makes an already difficult subject practically impenetrable unless you know the lingo. Much more accessible to the average educated person is Peter Kreeft s superb little book, Making Sense of Suffering. But the best treatments of the problem of evil in just a few pages can be found in the third chapter of the Book of Genesis in the Bible, the portions of the four gospels dealing with the death and resurrection of Jesus, and the beginning of J.R.R. Tolkien s fascinating work, The Silmarillion. In this last, Tolkien pictures God, having created the angels, inviting them to have a hand in the fashioning of the universe. They are to weave musical themes in harmony with a theme He proposes, and these themes will then be recast on a different plane in the created world. All goes well until Melkor, Tolkien s figure for Lucifer, begins to weave a discordant theme in an attempt to drown God out. His is a rebellious and jealous spirit, resentful of God s superior ability to bring real beings out of the void. In His mastery, God takes the dissonant notes of Melkor and so integrates them into the whole of the composition that they are again harmonious. Melkor struggles to unhinge the melody, but God s musicianship is too much for him. In the end, God permits Melkor and those angels who joined him in rebellion, as well as the good angels who made music in concert with God s design, to see how their work played itself out in creation. Every note had its counterpart in the physical world. Every note, even the most discordant, ultimately was woven into God s harmony. The effect of Tolkien s imagery is much more than to show that evil in the world is contrary to God s will, the result of misused freedom on the part of rebellious angels (and, later, sinful human beings), more even than to show how God brings good out of the evil He permits. Finally the effect is to give a vision of God so awesome and magnificent that the so-called problem of evil seems insignificant against our heightened awareness of God s goodness and majesty. That is what it will be like to meet God face to face. We think now that we will have lots of hard questions for Him. The truth is that we will be rendered speechless with love, joy, awe, and contrition.

6 Believing with Joy! Stewardship - A Way of Life Praying the Lord s Prayer Lord, teach us to pray. Luke 11:1 The beauty of the Our Father is its simplicity and its succinctness. Prayer does not have to be complex or lengthy, but it does need to be direct and heartfelt. The Our Father is a powerful prayer put in simple terms. It is through prayer that we truly experience God. It is through prayer that we develop our close relationship with God. St. Charles Borromeo said, We must pray before, during, and after everything we do. The prophet says, I will pray, and then I will understand. This is the way we can easily overcome the countless difficulties we face day after day, which, after all, are part of our work. In prayer we find strength to bring Christ to birth in ourselves and in others. (Excerpt from Catholic Stewardship Consultants) In our parish we have opportunities to pray. The Mother Church is open every day so that people can come by and say a prayer, light a candle and be still in front of the Blessed Sacrament residing in the Tabernacle. On Monday evenings we have Adoration and Benediction between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Reconciliation is also offered during this time. Each week a rosary is recited for peace in our world. It is said on a different day each week so that the 4 Mysteries of the Rosary can be prayed. Sunday and daily Mass are the ultimate prayer experience! Come join us and let Jesus teach us to pray! Therefore, you may wish to cite some official Catholic documents (such as Catechism of the Catholic Church, the Declaration on Euthanasia, and the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services) so that your agent will be guided by the teachings of the Church. You may wish to specifically forbid any form of euthanasia. You may wish to state generally: Medical treatments may be withheld or withdrawn if they do not offer me a reasonable hope of benefit or if they are excessively burdensome to me, my family, or the community.
