3 A Message from Father Charles Fink Page 3 My dear parish family, As summer draws to a close and school begins for our children and young people, it might be worthwhile to reflect a moment on the nature and value of education. Schooling is certainly about being given the knowledge and credentials to get a job and make a living. This starts sometimes in pre-school with learning to read and write and continues all the way through college or graduate school. In the case of priests, it consists of at least four years of study (scripture, church history, moral and systematic theology, and pastoral training) after college. The Church encourages her priests to engage formally in one way or another in life-long learning by attending workshops, lectures, summer programs, and so on. Honestly, the Church s encouragement doesn t always meet with much success. You may have noticed that priests are as human as anybody, and so some, upon ordination, feel their education is complete. Many adults feel the same way about graduating from school and beginning a career. They may bone up on the latest advances in their own field, but beyond that they re not terribly interested in a life-time of learning outside their field of expertise. Catholics are notorious in their similar attitude to the faith. They receive confirmation, and never learn another thing about their faith for the rest of their lives, especially if they ve considered confirmation a graduation from church-going. It s all a great shame. One of the things that distinguish us from animals is the capacity for wonder and ongoing intellectual growth, and modern technology, for all its dangers, places a world of fascinating subjects within our reach. So many good books, movies, videos, online courses and talks, so many ways to learn more about almost anything we d like to know more about, so many powerful tools to help us grow in knowledge of our faith, so much of it never taken advantage of. In coming weeks, I ll be telling you about a new parish initiative that will place at your fingertips a wealth of excellent material to deepen your faith and your commitment to Jesus and His Church. Keep your eyes open for it, and meanwhile think about committing a little time each day to using your God-given intelligence to learn something new. With love and prayers, Fr. Charles Fink

5 WHAT CATHOLICS BELIEVE; WHY THEY BELIEVE IT 12. JESUS CHRIST, UNIQUE! What is it about Jesus Christ that sets Him apart from all other religious leaders in history? Well, of course, to Christians the answer is easy: All the other religious leaders may have been good men, but Jesus is something more, namely the God-man. Is there anything, though, that a non-christian can see in Jesus that might indicate that He is more than just a great teacher and leader? Take a look at His life and teaching as it is revealed to us in the gospels and, for the sake of argument, set aside for a moment His purported miracles and the remarkable way in which He seems to be the living embodiment of Old Testament prophesies. Focus instead simply on what He said about Himself. The first thing you will notice is that no sane, decent persons ever said about themselves the kinds of things Jesus said about Himself. In fact, this was precisely what got Him into trouble with the religious authorities of His day. He claimed the right to forgive sins, a power reserved to the Almighty (Mark 2:5). He said He was Lord of the Sabbath, which had been instituted by God (Luke 6:5). He told His disciples that He and the Father were one (John 10:30) and that those who saw Him saw the Father (John 14:9). He frequently said things like: You have heard it said... but I say to you... (Matthew 5:21-48) as if it were His prerogative to amend the very law of God. The crowds who heard Him, we are told, were astonished at His teaching, for He taught with authority and not as the scribes and Pharisees (Mark 1:22), and it was said of Him, Never has anyone spoken like this (John 7:46). Not without reason, therefore, have writers like C.S. Lewis and Peter Kreeft argued that, given Jesus habitual manner of teaching, it simply is not permitted to us to say that He was just another great religious thinker. His assumption of authority associated with God alone and His explicit claims to be one with God, things shocking to the religious sensibilities of His audience, leave us with only these alternatives: Jesus was either bad, mad, or God; a liar, a lunatic, or Lord. But nobody ever says He was bad, and He never acts like a lunatic. It looks as if He must be what Christians have always said He is. Add to His teaching (about which, more later) the record of His miracles, His fulfilling so many prophecies, His followers going to their deaths in their belief that He had risen from the dead after being crucified, and Jesus appears absolutely unique in the annals of recorded history. Indeed, no one ever spoke or acted as He did.

I AM (GK Chesterton) Now and at the Hour of Our Death A Catholic guide to End-of-Life Decision-Making The law allows a surrogate to withhold or withdraw life-sustaining treatment if; The treatment is an excessive burden and death is expected within six months; or The treatment is an excessive burden and the patient is permanently unconscious; or Treatment would involve such pain, suffering or extraordinary burden that it would be deemed inhumane, and the patient has as irreversible or incurable condition. The decision-making standards in the law are obviously complex. While the law does attempt to establish safeguards to protect vulnerable patients from inappropriate and dangerous decisions, it does not mirror authoritative Catholic teaching. For example, it does not define excessive burden nor does it make a presumption in favor of providing those who are permanently unconscious with nutrition and hydration, as Catholic teaching does. Therefore, it as preferable for Catholics to appoint a health care agent under the health care proxy law in order to guide their agent in adhering to their faith beliefs. ARE YOU PRO-LIFE? Amen. Children Entering 1st Grade-Sept 2016 should be registered in the Religious Education Program. Participation in Level 1 is the first level of the Diocesan mandated 2 year preparation program for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist. LATE REGISTRATION If you have not registered please drop your forms off at the Religious Education Office as soon as possible. Forms can be found on the parish website or hard copies are available on the backstairs of the Religious Education Office. Children will be placed in classes on a first come first served basis. If no catechist is available by start of classes in October children will be placed in the Home Study Program.
