3 My dear parish family, Writing of the Cross of Christ in Magnificat, Bishop Robert Barron asked: What enabled the first Christians to hold up the cross, to sing its praises, to wear it as a decoration? And he answers: It became clear to them that somehow, on that terrible cross, sin had been dealt with. The curse of sin had been removed, taken care of. On that terrible cross, Jesus functioned as the Lamb of God, sacrificed for sin. Does this mean, he continues, that God the Father is a cruel taskmaster, demanding a bloody sacrifice so that his anger might be appeased? No. Jesus crucifixion was the opening up of the divine heart so that we could see that no sin of ours could separate us from the love of God. Two thousand years later, the Cross still has the power to transform hearts weighed down with sin, cynicism, and despair. Sohrab Ahmari declared himself an atheist when only twelve years old, unhappy with life and disgusted by the turn toward fundamentalist Islam in his native Iran. Living in Utah, he shocked his religious high school classmates with arguments in favor of abortion and post-birth infanticide. In college he discovered Nietzsche, who famously announced that God is dead. He got into drugs, drinking to excess, hooking up, and became a card-carrying communist. The turning point in his life, the thing that put him on the path to belief in God, and ultimately to his becoming a Catholic, was reading the Passion Narrative in the Gospel of Matthew. He began reading contemptuously but found himself deeply moved by the story of Christ s voluntary, sacrificial death. He wasn t transformed or converted all at once, but it was a beginning. Ahmari tells his story in the newly published From Fire, By Water: My Journey to the Catholic Faith. As we enter into Holy Week, with its emphasis on Jesus last days on earth before the Resurrection and its beautiful Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Vigil services, give some thought to making this Holy Week a special encounter with Christ. We may not need to change as much as Sohrab Ahmari did, but none of us is the child of God, the saint, we re called to be. Where would Ahmari be if he hadn t picked up that Bible left on a sofa by his college classmates and begun to read the Gospel of Matthew? How many times have we passed up the instruments of grace left on our path by the God of mercy and love? Don t waste this Holy Week. Make it count. 5 GOOD FRIDAY The Soldiers stare, then drift away. Young John finds nothing he can say. The veil is rent, the deed is done, And Mary holds her only Son. His limbs grow stiff, the night grows cold, But naught can loose that mother s hold. Her gentle, anguished eyes seem blind. Who knows what thoughts run through her mind? Perhaps she thinks of last week s palms, With cheering thousands off ring alms, Or dreams of Cana on the day She nagged him till she got her way. Her face shows grief but not despair. Her head though bowed has faith to spare, For even now she could suppose His thorns might somehow yield a rose. Her life with Him was full of signs That God writes straight with crooked lines. Dark clouds can hide the rising sun, And all seem lost, when all be won! Jeremiah Denton Jeremiah Denton ( ) was a Naval Aviator, a Rear Admiral, and a U.S. Senator. During the Vietnam War, he was shot down and held captive for years. In a North Vietnamese propaganda ilm, he famously blinked his eyes in Morse Code spelling out the word TORTURE. He wrote about his experience as a POW in a book called When Hell Was In Session. The poem above is included in that book. Denton was a devout Catholic.

8 RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY Good Friday Way of the Cross Pilgrimage April 19th 9 a.m. 12 noon (Start at St. Lawrence) Join Our Lady of the Snow Respect Life Ministry in a the Way of the Cross Pilgrimage, walking and praying the Stations of the Cross, the Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet on a 4 mile, police escorted journey along Montauk Highway from St. Lawrence the Martyr Church in Sayville to Our Lady of the Snow. Assure her of your friendship. Tell her you will be there for her and help her find healing. Where help can be found. Ask your friend if she has ever heard about help for people struggling after abortion. There are counselors, priests, and ministers prepared to help, as well as support groups and retreats. Spiritual healing. Let her know that God loves and forgives those who are sorrowful. He wants to comfort them. Begin the Journey. Encourage her to contact Project Rachel for help.
