3 A Message from Father Charles Fink Page 3 My dear parish family, In modern day France, the Church is practically dead, only 5% of French Catholics attending Mass regularly, in contrast to the practice of the growing and zealous Muslim population there. In 17 th century France, the Church had her problems, but they were very different. Named for Dutch theologian, Cornelius Jansen, a heresy called Jansenism, raged through the country. In its popular expression, Jansenism promoted a vision of God that was severe and frightening. As if to reassure his flock that in spite of their sinfulness, he was truly loving and merciful, Jesus appeared in a series of visions to a Visitation nun, St. Margaret Mary Alaqoque, revealing to her his Sacred Heart. The image of the Sacred Heart, wounded, ringed with thorns, crowned with a cross, aflame with love is one of the most vivid, moving symbols of God s unfathomable mercy. It s also a salutary reminder that as God loves us, so should we love God and one another. Our religion is an affair of the heart, as well as of the hands and the head. We are meant to know, love, and serve God in this life, so as to be happy with him forever in the next. Trusting in his love, striving to love him in return, reaching out in selfless, sacrificial love to others, who are his beloved sons and daughters the Sacred Heart sums up our vocation as Christians. It used to be the custom among many Catholics to enthrone an image of the Sacred Heart in their home and to pray each day a Morning Offering, giving the day with all that was in it to God. Are there any religious images in your home? Is daily prayer central to your spiritual regimen? June, coming to an end now, is the month of the Sacred Heart. May all our hearts be touched by the love of God and moved to make our homes and hearts places where God himself feels at home. O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer you my prayers, joys, and sufferings of this day for all the intentions of your Sacred heart, in union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world, for the salvation of souls, the reparation of sins, the reunion of all Christians, and in particular for the intentions of the Holy Father this month. FINK I ve often recommended the wonderful little periodical, Magnificat, as food for thought and a source of fruitful prayer and meditation. At all the exits of the church this weekend you ll find brochures describing Magnificat s content and enabling you to subscribe if you wish. Check it out. Bishop Barres is promoting subscriptions to the Long Island Catholic. At the exits of the church are cards with information about how you can get a free copy of the LIC to see if you d like to subscribe. Quo Vadis Long Island is a five day/four night summer camp for young Catholic men and women ages 14 to 18 who are the future missionary disciples and faith leaders here on Long Island. The camp is an opportunity for them to encounter and learn more about Vocations, to deepen their faith, and to better discern God s call in their lives. The program was created in an effort to respond to Bishop John Barres call for Dramatic Missionary Growth here in the Diocese of Rockville Centre. 5 WHAT CATHOLICS BELIEVE; WHY THEY BELIEVE IT 54. PRAYING TO SAINTS A famous Rogers and Hammerstein song tells us that we never walk alone. Well, neither do we ever pray alone. Besides the fact that someone, somewhere on earth is probably praying just as we are at any given moment, we are part of an enormous family that transcends the bounds of space and time: a great cloud of witnesses, throngs of angels and saints in heaven continually pray to God for us and with us. The Catholic practice of prayer to saints is much misunderstood, much maligned, and sometimes by Catholics themselves badly explained. First, let it be said that the charge leveled against Catholics that they worship idols is ludicrous. The pictures and statues before which Catholics often prayer are simply visual aids, reminders of Jesus, Mary, Joseph, and other saints. They are like a family album. Catholics are quite capable of distinguishing a statue of Jesus from Jesus himself. To use an image to help focus one s attention in prayer has nothing whatever in common with the fashioning of the golden calf described in chapter 32 of the Book of Exodus. As for the Catholic practice of praying to saints, a close look at the Hail Mary reveals what is behind this practice and shows the emptiness of the suggestion that Catholics worship saints. They worship God. They ask the saints to join them in their worship by praying to God for them. The Hail Mary concludes with the words, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Ironically, all non-catholic Christians believe in intercessory prayer. They pray for each other. They frequently attribute special intercessory and healing powers to their leaders or to specific members of their congregation. The only difference between Catholic and Protestant practice in this regard is that the former believe they can ask the living and the dead (who are alive in and with God in heaven) for their prayers, whereas the latter, for some strange reason, think they can only ask the earthbound for prayers. Catholic devotion to saints, asking their prayers and imitating them, is one of God s special gifts to his people to remind them that they belong to a much bigger family than their earthly one. It serves also to reinforce their belief that death is a doorway to eternal life and that we are still in touch by prayer with those who have gone before us to God. Nor should we think of such devotion as optional. It is not a matter of going straight to Jesus instead of the saints, anymore than it is a matter of loving God instead of our neighbor. We are to do both. Only by doing both will our hearts continue to expand until they embrace God and all his children, and all creation.

6 Believing with Joy! Stewardship - A Way of Life Our 100th Anniversary Celebration! Last week we gathered at the 11 a.m. Mass to celebrate 100 years of Our Lady of the Snow Parish and the efforts of the parishioners to grow our community in faith, love and hope. We had hoped to uncovered our time capsule that included a Children s book of signatures; invitations, program, photograph and list of volunteers for the June 24 th Celebration; Parish Bulletin, Parish Song and Holy Card; Fr Mike s Homily; Xerox copies of Children s art work; Articles from the Patchogue Advance and from Newsday; A letter to the Children of These items are displayed in the back of the Large Church. But we could not unbury the Time Capsule until the middle of the week - too long a story for this space! We thanked, blessed and remembered our long time parishioners. We asked those who were with us to sign a scroll to be put in our next time capsule. Our scroll is in the Large Church by our posters if anyone who has been part of our parish for over 50 years to wishes to add their signature please do so. We had our own memory lane with posters depicting our history decade by decade. Take a stroll and see how we have grown! We ended our celebration with hospitality that was filled with the wonderful baked creations of our parishioners. It is good to look back on our past, to share our memories and think of those who came before us. It is just as important to look ahead and see where we are being led. Thank you to those who came before us, are present now in hope that Our Lady of the Snow can remain for another 100 years! Thank you to those who helped set up for hospitality and our bakers and servers, Our Long time Parishioner Committee, our music ministry for our Parish Song, those who made the bookmarks and all who came to celebrate our 100th Anniversary in our greatest prayer, the Eucharist! We are going to the Ducks Game! Last year 50 parishioners enjoyed a summer evening at Bethpage Ball Park for the Duck s game. Join us this year on July Deacon Ed and Cody (our seminarian) will be hosting the Altar Servers at this outing. Let s get 100 or more parishioners together in honor of our 100 th celebration. Tickets cost $10, you can buy them at the Rectory. We still have T-Shirts for sale for only $10. Let all go to the game in our parish T-Shirts! Our Book Club will be reading Fr James Martin s, My Life with the Saints. If you wish to join us the books are $9.00 each. The order will go in this Wednesday. Please call Beth at to order a book. 7 Our Lady of the Snow Parish 100th Anniversary Parish History ( ) by Gene Horton REV. PETER A. SCHUTZ, PASTOR, ; One of the most interesting pastors our parish ever had was Rev. Peter A. Schutz, born in 1887 and died in Fr. Schutz has the sole distinction of being pastor here twice: from 1933 to and again, from 1946 until his death in Fr. Schutz was a native of Brooklyn and was a graduated from St. John s College. He studied for the priesthood at the University of Innsbruck in Austria and was ordained there in 1914, on the eve of World War I. During Fr. Schutz s first term as our pastor, the decision was made to raise the Mother Church onto a new foundation and put in a full basement.. Another major event during his first tenure here was the arrival of the Ursuline Sisters to Blue Point in In 1937, Fr. Schutz attended the International Eucharist Congress held in the Philippines. Fr. Schutz enjoyed world traveling. On his return that year, he stopped by Rome and had an audience with the Holy Father, Pope Pius XI. In 1946, Fr. Schutz returned to Blue Point as our pastor. A series of young curates were assigned to Our Lady of the Snow during the late1940 s and early 1950 s including newly ordained Fr. James J. Daly (later an Auxiliary Bishop here) and Rev. Thaddeus Rooney (from Ireland). Fr. Schutz passed away on September 19, On this, the 100th Anniversary of our Mother church, let us honor and remember Father Schutz and his contribution to our parish.

There are 12 sessions. They do not have to be taken in order. Please call or the Religious Education Office to sign up for classes. If we do not have catechists by class time children will be assigned to the Home Study Program. CATECHISTS NEEDED Levels 4 &5 Children are now on waiting lists. We need at least 2 catechists in each of these grade levels. Catechists are needed on Tues or Wed at 4:30 or Wed at 6. Please call Religious Education if you are interested in sharing your faith with a group (8). Children Entering 1st Grade Sept 2017 should be registered in the Religious Education Program. Participation in Level 1 is the first level of the Diocesan mandated 2 year preparation program for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist. Registration forms should be returned to the Religious Education Office as soon as possible.

Contact Diana at Outreach provides food, toiletries and household supplies to those who are struggling in this community during this very difficult economy. All donations can be left outside the pantry door or at the Outreach office. During the summer months our donations to the food pantry drop considerably, but the need for food is always present. Thank you for thinking of your neighbors in need during the summer. DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE The Saint Lawrence Knights of Columbus will provide a community service by hosting a defensive driving course in The Bethany parish center behind St. Lawrence the Martyr Church in Sayville. Save money on your insurance or remove up to 4 points off your license. Good for three years. Cost of class is $35.00 when mailed in or $40.00 at the door.
