1 Our Lady of the Snow Catholic Church 175 Blue Point Avenue Blue Point, New York Telephone: April 16, 2017 Easter Sunday This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad (Psalm 118) MASS SCHEDULE WEEK DAY MASSES: Monday Friday 8:30AM in Mother Church WEEKEND MASSES: Saturday 5PM in Large Church Sunday 7:30AM in Mother Church 9AM, and 11:00AM in Large Church Our Christian faith gives us a religion of the Cross, but it is a faith entirely dominated by the Resurrection of Our Lord. It is a faith not in a past event that took Our Lord to heaven, but a faith in the risen Christ living His transformed life within us and increasing that life in us through every cross of ours, until it finally consumes us in love and joy and glory, as the constant presence of our risen Lord is revealed to our eyes and hearts and minds and souls when He comes to take us home. --Fr. John Keep SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION: Saturday 4PM 4:30PM in Large Church Monday 6:15PM 7:15PM in Mother Church EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: Monday 6PM 8PM in Mother Church MIRACULOUS MEDAL NOVENA & BENEDICTION: Monday 7:30 8PM Mother Church ROSARY: April 20, 4:45pm Mother Church Visit us online! 5 WHAT CATHOLICS BELIEVE; WHY THEY BELIEVE IT 44. THE ETHICS OF NEW LIFE The flip-side of the Catholic Church s teaching that sex is ordained by God to express committed love in marriage and thereby bring new life into the world is that human life is to be produced only by this God-given means. In our technology-driven world in which it is presumed that if it can be done, it should be done, the Church is nearly alone in questioning the morality of artificial insemination, in-vitro fertilization, surrogate motherhood, sperm, ovum and embryo banks, and the cloning of human beings. From the point of view of most of the Western world, these are morally neutral scientific procedures for obtaining what we want. Nobody gets hurt by them, so what s the big deal? From the Church s point of view, somebody quite often does get hurt by them. Apart from other problematic elements of such procedures, in-vitro fertilization and embryo banks entail the destruction of fertilized human ova, which are tiny but genetically complete human beings. The cloning of humans, not yet possible but eagerly anticipated by many, raises the specter of manufacturing persons for the sole purpose of farming organs perfectly compatible with already existing human beings. We have already had court cases in which a surrogate mother, having carried a child in her womb for nine months, no longer wants to part with it after birth. The truth is that civil law cannot keep pace with the rapid advances in bio-technology and the unprecedented dilemmas arising out of that technology. But the fundamental reason for the Church s opposition to the aforementioned procedures is that each bypasses the natural, God-ordained link between spousal sexual intercourse and the production of new human life, which instead of being loveproduced is lab-produced. The Church is not anti-technology. You remember in our discussion of drugs we said that fixing what is wrong is right and that, therefore, therapeutic use of drugs is legitimate. Similarly, technology in the service of enhancing a couple s ability to conceive through sexual intercourse is legitimate and praiseworthy, but circumventing intercourse altogether, producing human life in such a way that intercourse has no essential connection to it, is to separate something God does not want divided. It is understandable that in a pragmatic society in which God influences few of our decisions, the Catholic Church s teachings on these matters fall mostly on deaf ears. One could almost hope that the Church were wrong about all of this, because if she is not, we are in for some scary times ahead. Maybe we can fool Mother Nature some of the time, but when we do not, the price to be paid is usually pretty high.

Archbishop William Lori The truth about "Separation of Church and State" Many Americans are surprised to learn that the words, "Separation of Church and State" do not appear in the First Amendment or anywhere else in the Constitution. This phrase is traced to a letter President Thomas Jefferson wrote in 1802 to the Danbury Baptist Association of Connecticut in response to their concerns about their Religious Freedom. Jefferson quoted the First Amendment: "Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;..." "thus building a wall of separation between Church and State." The metaphor of a "wall" was used to put restrictions only on the government and not on the people. At the very heart of Jefferson's assurance of a "wall of separation", is the notion that the government will not interfere with the peoples' rights to worship God as well as to practice their beliefs. Sadly, today many choose to reverse the real meaning of Jefferson s words to place restrictions on people instead of on government. (usconstitution.net; wallbuilders.com; schoolprayerinamerica.info) "And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure if we have lost... a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are the gift of God? That they are not to be violated but with His wrath?" -Thomas Jefferson Lorraine Yovino, Bulletin Editor/Barbara Samuells, President Catholics for Freedom of Religion lkyovino@reagan.com IMPORTANT- IT S UP TO US Become informed get it straight from the horse s mouth Live streamed at White House POTUS Live streamed at facebook.com/white House

7 Our Lady of the Snow Parish 100th Anniversary Parish History ( ) by Gene Horton THE OUTDOOR STATUE OF OUR LADY OF THE SNOW In the summer of 1928, our parish was involved in a special project, the results of which have been visible ever since. A committee was formed to obtained that beautiful outdoor statue of Our Lady of the Snow that adorns the front property of our Mother Church property today. The statue is solid marble. At its base, the title OUR LAY OF THE SNOW is engraved. Funds were raised to purchased the statue and in August, 1928, the statue was officially dedicated and blessed by Fr. James J. Cronin, pastor of St. Francis de Sales parish in Patchogue and our pastor at that time, Fr. Charles A. Rohr. In 1956, a new central stairway was built (designed by parishioner Henry Betjemann) and the statue was moved to the front lawn of the property basically between the church and the rectory. After the handicapped ramp was installed in the 1990 s the statue was moved to where it stands today.

8 Believing with Joy! Stewardship - A Way of Life It is Easter! Today is a day of great joy for us as Catholics. The joy is reflected all around us in the way that people are dressed, in the way they approach Mass on this day. They key for us today is to carry that joy away from Mass to our celebrations and our lives. We hear about similar joy in today s Gospel from St. John. When Mary of Magdala goes to the tomb and discovers it empty, she does not walk leisurely back to tell the others. She runs, filled with excitement and with the same joy we must feel. Joy is contagious. That is what we need to spread when we go forth on this glorious day. Easter for us should be an encounter with the Risen Lord. We are to share the Good News. That is what Mary of Magdala does. Perhaps we have a difficult time talking about the joy we feel at Easter and at other times in the Church. We should not be hesitant; sharing the joy is part of being a disciple of Christ; it is what makes us an Easter people. All of the Gospels tell of the Resurrection of Christ. They may differ in some details, but they all agree that Christ is Risen. When His Apostles go forth to spread the Good News, they speak of His Resurrection, not the empty tomb. That is what we need to do, what we need to share the Easter joy of being a Catholic and a Christian. Catholic Relief Services Lenten Boxes If you took and used a Lenten Box from the Church, you can return it on the first Sunday after Easter (April 22-and 23). 11 A little humor from Father Fink Forrest Gump dies and meets St. Peter at the Pearly Gates. Peter says, Happy to meet you, Forrest, but I have to give you the entrance exam. Are you ready? Okay, what two days of the week begin with the letter T? Forrest says, Today and tomorrow. St. Peter can t believe his ears but realizes Forrest has a point. So he says, Okay, how many seconds in a year? Forrest says, 12: There s January 2nd, February 2nd, March 2nd. Peter stops him and thinks, I can t believe this. He asks the last question: What is God s first name? Forrest says, Andy. I know that from the hymn the goes, Andy walks with me. Andy talks with me. Andy tells me I am his own. Peter says, I give up. Come on in; Run, Forrest, Run.
