3 A Message from Father Charles Fink Page 3 January 18, 2015 My dear parish family, Back to Bishop McGann s time, the Diocese of Rockville Centre has run an annual appeal to help fund its non-parish programs and services, including hospital, prison and campus chaplaincies, senior and handicap housing, drug and alcohol abuse rehabs, and other counseling services through Catholic Charities. These programs serve over 600,000 of our LI neighbors yearly, whether or not they re Catholic, whether or not they re church-goers. Each parish in the Diocese, based on its size and financial condition, is assessed a certain proportion of what the Diocese needs in order to accomplish its mission. More than half the parishes in the Diocese meet or exceed their assigned goals every year, some going way over. Parishes that reach their goal get back 20% of the money they ve collected up to what they re assessed and 80% of the money collected over that assessment So this annual appeal has enormous potential as a parish fundraiser. Imagine a parish doubling its goal. It would get back as much as it gave. In the past, Our Lady of the Snow was among the parishes that made their goal each year. That hasn t happened for some time now, and I understand that there s a history to this, a lot of hurts and dissatisfaction with diocesan handling of parish issues. But not to give to the Catholic Ministries Appeal doesn t so much send a message to the Bishop and the Diocese as hurt those whom the Diocese is trying to serve, and when the parish doesn t make its goal, it gets nothing back, so the parish is hurt as well. And the parish never realizes that money in direct contributions. It just doesn t happen. Next weekend we ll kick off the 2015 Catholic Ministries Appeal. Please consider making a generous pledge. You ll be helping many of our LI neighbors beyond the bounds of our parish, and if we make our goal, you ll be helping Our Lady of the Snow. A Christian, among other things, is one who gives and forgives. Please join me in doing both. I know it s not easy, but we re disciples of a crucified God. Why would we expect it to be easy? Our Lady of the Snow can and should make its goal in this year s Catholic Ministries Appeal. Let s do it. Please. With love and prayers, Fr. Charles Fink

5 Believing with Joy! Stewardship - A Way of Life Evening of Social Justice Awareness January 22 at 7:30 p.m. for the whole parish Two guest speakers: Deacon Ed Karen and Loic Moussoh Speaking of their experiences of faith and mission. Representatives from organizations, such as Brendan s House, Beads for Life, Heifer, Rollstone Foundation, Bula and more will be present. They will present the work they do to bring justice and peace to our world and the opportunity to share in their mission by purchasing products and/or gathering information. Our Evening is based on Catholic Social Teaching Catholic Social Teaching Catholic social teaching is a central and essential element of our faith. Its roots are in the Hebrew prophets who announced God's special love for the poor and called God's people to a covenant of love and justice. It is a teaching founded on the life and words of Jesus Christ, who came "to bring glad tidings to the poor... liberty to captives... recovery of sight to the blind"(lk 4:18-19), and who identified himself with "the least of these," the hungry and the stranger (cf. Mt 25:45). Catholic social teaching is built on a commitment to the poor. This commitment arises from our experiences of Christ in the Eucharist. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church explains, "To receive in truth the Body and Blood of Christ given up for us, we must recognize Christ in the poorest, his brethren" (no. 1397). from Catholic Social Teaching: Challenges and Directions Weekly Rosary Schedule Join us in praying the rosary in the Mother Church at 4:45 on Wednesday, January 21 Thank You A special thank you to the Arts and Environment Committee for decorating our church and property for Advent and Christmas. Many hours, muscles and creativity went into decorating for the Advent and Christmas seasons. Thank you Joan Bohem, Barbara Renner, Ann Severance, Connie Pomillia, Debra King, Dale Hoffmann, Joan McCarthy, Marge Russell, Loic Mussoh and our maintenance staff, Lou and Bruce, for the providing us with a beautiful space to gather and worship! 6 KNOWING OUR FAITH Coming next week: a new series based on the CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH I m a great fan of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. It s a clear, authoritative summary of what the Church believes and teaches. At over 700 pages, however, it may very well seem to most readers a lot more than a summary and, given its bulk and the weighty nature of its subject matter, more than a little daunting. Beginning next week, therefore, this page in the bulletin will be devoted to shortening and simplifying the many lessons the Catechism has to teach us. The series will run for a little more than a year and, following the format of the Catechism, will deal with the Creed, the Sacraments, the Commandments, and prayer. My hope is that these brief articles will whet your appetite for delving more deeply into the riches of our Catholic faith, if not by reading and studying the Catechism itself, then perhaps by reading something like Peter Kreeft s Fundamentals of the Faith or Catholic Christianity. In any case, I invite you to take a bit of time each week to read the one page lesson you ll find in the bulletin. Perhaps you ll want to share it with someone else. You might even decide to cut it out, make copies, and spread it around to your Catholic friends who may be interested in knowing their faith better, to your non-catholic friends who may be curious to know what makes us tick. As you peruse these little lessons, try to remember these four R s: Read, Reflect, Respond, Repose. That is, don t just quickly read them and immediately shift your attention to something else. Read slowly, thoughtfully. Mull over what you ve read. Pray to God about what you ve read, asking for additional light and guidance. Then rest in His presence, thanking Him for His love. The fancy expression for this kind of reading is Lectio Divina. It s the ancient monastic method of reading and praying with scripture, but it s a good way to approach any religious or spiritual text. God bless you as read these little essays. May they bring you light and peace and prove a helpful guide on your journey with God, to God, in God.
