3 My dear parish family, It may strike you as odd that in the middle of Advent I m writing to you about the Rosary, but by now you ve probably noticed that I ll use any excuse at all to talk or write about my favorite prayer. My excuse today is that Advent is about preparing for the celebration of Christmas, that without Jesus and Mary there is no Christmas, and the Rosary is all about Jesus and Mary. It s a really terrific way of staying close to them, to review over the course of any given week the main events of their lives, to fit into each day a minimum of prayer, and to offer that prayer for your specific needs and intentions. As you re thinking about Christmas and gift-giving, why not give yourself the best gift ever and begin the daily practice of praying the Rosary, if not all at once each day, then spread out during the day, a decade at a time. You can pray it almost anywhere, combining it, perhaps, with a walk, thereby doing something good for your body and your soul. And living on Long Island, consequently subject to hours stuck in traffic on our East-West thoroughfares, you can turn that potentially wasted time into prayer time. Just offer up a decade or two or more of the Rosary for patience and sanity. There are How To Rosary booklets at the exits of the Church, and you can download a free App on your smart phone, LAUDATE, which will take you to podcasts of various versions of the Rosary. Just listen and pray along. Grow closer to Jesus and Mary think of your prayer as holding hands with them--and make them happy that you re giving them some time each day. They ll bless you for it. With love and prayers, Fr. Charles Fink

5 FR. JOHN KEEP: ON PRIORITIES Life is not very simple, although it becomes simpler and simpler as we come closer and closer to God. So until we reach a state of union with God which is very deep and very conscious, we have to be careful to keep the various aspects of our life in their proper place and to cultivate a number of different spiritual activities. What are the things that bring us nearer to God? It is obvious that taking part in Holy Mass and receiving Holy Communion is the one means of sanctifying everything else that we do. Our Lord said that if we did not do this we should have no life in us. When it comes to our private lives, however, perhaps the order of priorities is not so obvious. We have duties in charity or justice to other people and to ourselves, like keeping healthy as far as we reasonably can. We may have special duties falling on us as a result of a vocation God has given us. But then we also have need of such things as prayer and spiritual reading and self-denial or mortification. It is a fact that unless we pray privately and with interior sincerity, we shall not take part in Holy Mass itself really well. Our interior conversation with God is of very great importance. Without it we lose contact with God; we become external and artificial with Him. We shall never really recognize and feel the unbelievable intimacy and love of God for us in Holy Communion if we have never or only rarely prayed quietly and interiorly in solitude. We must regularly seek to be alone with God for a time and drop everything else. But we starve our prayer if we never listen to God speaking to us through Scripture and through good deep spiritual reading. So somewhere near the top in our list of regular but voluntary duties we shall place our spiritual reading. We will read very quietly and slowly and prayerfully... and will pause quite often during it to absorb what we have read and to speak to God about it if we are so inclined. I suppose we can get a good idea of how seriously we value spiritual reading if we work out how much time we give to it in comparison to how much time we spend in other kinds of reading and listening to the radio or watching television. There is one other thing among our priorities that I want to mention. It is mortification or detachment in our contact with people and things. We must not let anything at all take priority over our union with God Himself. Even our friendships are not to be independent of God. And in our use of things of this world we also have to be moderate. We should not become so immersed in them that we forget God. For more Fr. Keep go to
