3 A Message from Father Charles Fink Page 3 July 27, 2014 My dear parish family, Here s another invitation. If you have a family member or neighbor who is sick or homebound who might be comforted by having me or one of our Eucharistic Ministers visit with communion, let us know. My sense is that there are many elderly in our community who are unable to get to church anymore. I d hate to think they felt forgotten by the Church, but I m only one person. I need you to be my eyes and ears in your neighborhoods and in the wider community and to let me know if you see or hear of someone who would like to receive communion at home or, for that matter, go to confession or be anointed. Which brings up the broader issue of all of us working together to reach out to other to share the gifts of our Catholic faith with them. Your role and mine may be different, but as I say, I m just one person. You can have an enormous influence on others and on the health of our parish just by doing a few little things. Share this bulletin with your friends and neighbors who aren t coming to church, and speak to them positively about the parish. Don t worry: there ll always be plenty of folks making sure everyone knows about the negative. Share your faith with your children and grandchildren. Let them know, not just on Sundays, how important the Church, prayer, and staying close to God are to you. You needn t be heavy-handed about it, but it shouldn t be that your Catholic faith is so invisible that even your family and friends don t see what difference it makes. And pray for me and your parish! Just as it s very easy for God to be out of sight, out of mind, so we can coast through life or get so caught up in our work-aday world that we seldom reflect on the fact that Jesus is depending on us, His disciples, to touch others lives. We re all in this together. We all together make up the Church, the Body of Christ. I don t know how much you need me, but I know I need you. God make us all faithful instruments of His grace and peace. With love and prayers, Fr. Charles Fink

5 Stewardship and Prayer Summertime and the living is easy most of us do have more down time during the summer, the days are longer and often there are less scheduled activities to take up our time. Summertime is a great time to look at our prayer life and think how we can enhance it, deepen it or begin it. Prayer is the foundation of stewardship, through prayer we have a relationship with God, we get to know God more, we discover all that God has in store for us and we get to know ourselves better. We give back to God when we give our time to be with God in prayer. We can pray by using the rich tradition of the prayers of the Catholic Church such as the Rosary. The Rosary may take some time, but it is a prayer that puts us in contact with the life of Christ through the Mysteries. The repetition of the prayers is meant to lead us into restful and contemplative prayer related to each Mystery. The gentle repetition of the words helps us to enter into the silence of our hearts, where Christ's spirit dwells. How to pray the rosary resources can be found in your child s text book from last year, family bibles often will have a section on the rosary, on line, and at the parish. Call Beth at if you would like a Rosary booklet. We can pray by using Scripture. Read the Reading of the day or for the upcoming Sunday. Spend time with the Word of God. An online site that helps to this is Sacred Space, an Irish Jesuit website that teaches the Ignatius way of praying with Scriptures of the day. The site is this site will also lead you to The Three Minute Retreat form Loyola Press. Just spend time and talk to Jesus! Tell Jesus your worries, your joys, your failings, your victories; tell Jesus everything! Jesus is with us, He wants you to know His loving presence. Have a cup of tea or coffee on the deck and just be with Jesus Daily Prayer In one of his homilies, Fr Charles gave us a formula for daily prayer that Cardinal Timothy Dolan uses: In the morning I give Jesus my all. In in the afternoon I give Jesus my trust In the evening I ask Jesus for mercy Grace before meals, a simple way to pray with your family. Use the traditional prayer or use your own words to thank God for the food and the family that gathers at your table. Bless us, O Lord, and these your gifts, which we are about to receive from your bounty. Through Christ our Lord. Amen STEWARDSHIP FINANCIAL REPORT Collection Week of 7/20 Week of TOTAL $7,426 $7,500

(a) True ; (b) False TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION By the dawn of the fourteenth century, the sacrament of confirma on was ripe for a rescue, since vast numbers of the faithful never received it, and when it was celebrated, it was done so in isola on from bap sm and Eucharist. A bishop named William Durandus set out to reclaim this liturgy, but he had a crea ve touch and added some things into the mix that had never been thought of before. One was a slap. Oddly, he replaced the kiss of peace at the end of confirma on with a slap on the cheek that endured to modern mes. This wakeup call was related in his imagina on to a custom in the military, wherein ceremonies of knighthood and inves ture involved a symbolic wound as a sign of willingness to suffer. Within every congrega on today there are people who have memories of fre ng through their confirma on liturgies, anxious to know how enthusias c a slap the bishop would bestow. Durandus loved symbolism and had a reason for every ritual and prac- ce, but his crea ve spin on the celebra on shows how sadly adri confirma on was from its anchorage in bap sm, how far off-course from its home port of the Eucharis c community.
