3 My dear parish family, One of the very positive aspects of the internet is that it places the whole world of news, education, art and entertainment at our fingertips. Bishop Robert Barron cites a poll indicating that Catholics are among the least informed about their own history, culture, doctrinal and moral teachings. And although it s easy to place the blame on poor preaching and religious education, the truth is that we should all be engaged in life-long learning via self-education, and the internet makes this very easy. It needs to be used with care and discrimination, but if it is, it s a goldmine of information and inspiration. I ve mentioned before that my computer home page is mycatholic.com, a customizable site featuring dozens of essays, news items, and links to other sites. By looking at it each day, reading some of the essays, and then looking at the author profile at the end of each essay, I m often led to websites I d never before heard of. So, for example, I read an essay entitled A Theology of Home by a woman named Carrie Gress. Impressed by what she had to say, I read her profile at the bottom of the page and found out she has a Ph.D in philosophy, is author of a book called The Marian Option, is the mother of four, and is editor-in-chief of a website called Helena Daily, everything on it written by young mothers and recent college grads, all women, all deeply Catholic. My point isn t that this site will be everyone s cup of tea, only that spending a little time each day looking at good Catholic material on the internet will lead you to other good things and that your knowledge of the riches of our Catholic faith will thereby grow, enriching your life and increasing your incentive and ability to live out your Christian calling. Just for fun, especially the women of all ages reading this, check out Helenadaily.com. See if it turns out to be your cup of tea. There are some very good things on it. It led me to an artist I d never heard of, Marianne Stokes, and the purchase of a print of one of her paintings, Madonna and Child. 5 FR. JOHN KEEP: ON LIVING FOR THE LORD Our Lord is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He does not change character at all. It is true that He is in a very different state since He rose from the dead, but what He feels in His Heart for you and me is not different from what He felt in His Heart for those He met in Palestine two millennia ago. By reading in the Bible how Jesus felt and acted towards people, we can see how He feels and acts towards us, but there is more to it than that. Holy Scripture is the living word of God. When we read in the Gospel that Jesus healed this sick person, or that He forgave that wicked person, or that He instructed this ignorant person, or had patience with that dull-witted one, it is not just a bit of instruction as to how He behaved, in order that we can deduce what He felt like. Our Lord Himself is telling you about it. He is telling you how He feels about you, or He is telling you how He feels about someone else you know, about your neighbor. When you read the Gospel with humility, simplicity and faith, Our Lord is opening the secrets of His Sacred Heart to you. He is offering Himself to you and pleading with you to give yourself to Him. He wants you to have one heart and mind with Him. Our Lord lived for us and wants us to live for Him... The theme of reparation to Our Lord is very rarely mentioned these days. We are not often urged to make little sacrifices and do voluntary extra good works to make up to Our Lord for the coldness and indifference and refusals of so many of those to whom He gives His invitations. If we really love Him, surely we shall be not only saddened when we see someone insult or disobey or ignore the love Jesus has for him, but we shall want to make up for that coldness or indifference or sin. If we look at Our Lord in tears as He sees the destruction coming to His beloved people in Jerusalem because they have not received Him into their hearts, surely we shall try to make it up to Him. What sort of destruction is coming to people He loves these days when so many even of His chosen ones desert Him? Surely we can make reparation. Surely we can and ought to comfort the Heart of Christ. If we were to love Him twice as much, pray twice as much, serve Him twice as much to make up for someone else who has let Him down, should not that be a good expression of our love for Him? And might not God accept our extra reparation-offering and move that unfaithful person to repent and give his love to Jesus after all? We are the people of God because Christ Himself has chosen us and made us just that. It gives us a responsibility to see that from mankind, at this very time and at all times, a stream of love, of praise, of thanksgiving, of sacrifice, of prayer is given to God through the Heart of Christ.

9 RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY It is a poverty to decide that a child must die so that you may live as you wish. -St. Theresa of Calcutta About Our Lady of the Snow Respect Life Ministry This group strives to become God s instrument of life for the parish and local community. Members work to make others aware of the sanctity of all life and to prevent the deterioration of moral values evident in the practice of stem cell research, cloning, abortion, infanticide, assisted suicide, euthanasia, and capital punishment. Activities include monthly meetings in the Cottage, writing letters to politicians and news media, witnessing at Planned Parenthood and abortion clinic locales, supporting a pregnant mother and newborn, infant clothing collection, Good Friday pilgrimage and Stations of the Cross, and an annual Night of Prayer for Life on December 8 th. The next meeting of the OLS Respect Life Ministry will be held Thursday, November 8th at 10 a.m. in the cottage. All are welcome. The next Prayerful Presence will be held Saturday, October 13th at 10:30 a.m. on the sidewalk in front of Planned Parenthood on Waverly Avenue in Patchogue. Signs will be provided. The DRVC Respect Life Youth Contest has begun. The contest is open to students in grades 7-12 and offers cash prizes for winning entries in various categories.
