Greene wrote the screenplay. Orson Welles ad-libbed a bit of the dialogue, including the last sentence of the quote above, perhaps the most memorable in the entire movie. We needn t subscribe to the suggestion that only violence and bloodshed produce progress, but we can take comfort in the truth that in spite of difficult times, great and good things can be accomplished.

A Message from Father Charles Fink Page 3 My dear parish family, Sir Alec Guinness: You older folks may remember him for his starring role in the WWII classic The Bridge on the River Kwai. Younger folks would know him as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original Star Wars Trilogy. What you may not know about him is this. Being English, he was brought up as an Anglican, a member of the Church of England, but in his teen years he bounced around from Presbyterianism to atheism to Marxism to Buddhism, at one point attending a few Quaker meetings. While rehearsing for the play, Hamlet, an Anglican priest corrected the way Guinness was making the sign of the cross. Something about the encounter drew him back to the Anglican fold, and the turmoil of WWII further deepened his faith. Then, in 1954, working in France on a film based on the G.K. Chesterton Fr. Brown Mysteries, he was walking down the street dressed as a Catholic priest (Fr. Brown in the movie) when a little boy ran up to him and, thinking him a priest, took his hand and walked along with him, chattering away as if they d been friends for years. Guinness was so struck by the boy s trust and familiarity that he began looking into the Catholic faith. Soon after, his son contracted Polio and appeared close to death. Guinness made a deal with God. If his son were healed, he d raise the boy a Catholic. Against all expectation, the child recovered completely. Guinness and his wife enrolled the boy in a Jesuit school, and a few years later all three became Catholics. Sir Alec remained a faithful Catholic the rest of his life, dying in He wrote a delightful autobiography called Blessings in Disguise where he tells of his conversion I ve mentioned it before, but this sort of information and lots else can be found on a website called ChurchPop. It s filled with fascinating articles and videos, like one of NFL star, Justin Tucker, singing a beautiful version of Ave Maria, another of actress, Patricia Keaton s telling of a particularly moving experience of receiving communion at Mass, and the story of how one branch of the family of Laura Ingalls Wilder (of Little House on the Prairie fame) became Catholic. ChurchPop give it a try. And don t forget FORMED.ORG for a wealth of entertaining, inspiring, and educational material, all free to our parishioners. Access the site using our parish code (XZHKBF) and enter your and a password of your own devising. It s a great resource for the whole family. With love and prayers, Fr. Charles Fink

WHAT CATHOLICS BELIEVE; WHY THEY BELIEVE IT FR. JOHN KEEP: ON THE EUCHARIST In line with the two-thousand year old tradition of the Church, Fr. Keep tells us that there are three essential aspects of the Eucharist that must be kept in mind if we are to appreciate this sacrament in all its richness. The first is that the Eucharist is a sacrifice: not a repetition of Jesus sacrifice on the cross, much less a new and different sacrifice, but the one, perfect sacrifice our Lord offered on Calvary and continues to offer to the Father on our behalf for all eternity, made present at each Mass. It is as if, when Mass is celebrated, a portal is opened between heaven and earth, and we are privileged to participate in Jesus sacrificial offering of Himself to the Father for the good of all God s children. At Mass we unite with Him in making that offering oblation is the word the Mass often uses in the hope that our whole life will become a perfect offering to God for others. The second aspect of the Eucharist to which we must hold fast is its character as a sacred meal, in which Jesus feeds us with Himself while deepening our union with one another. That union grows by our fraternal coming together to worship and by our being increasingly assimilated to Christ as one body. Fr. Keep compares our union to Christ to a marriage and our Eucharistic celebration to a marriage banquet. Indeed, it is a participation in the divine wedding feast Jesus makes reference to in more than one parable. Finally, we must always remember that in the Eucharist we have the Real Presence of Jesus Himself. At the words of consecration, it is the risen Lord who takes the place of the bread and wine on the altar, while miraculously maintaining all their appearances, including those that can be discerned by scientific instruments. (If science could prove a change in the substance of the Eucharist after the words of consecration, faith would no longer be necessary or a virtue; we would have proof.) To receive the Eucharist is to receive Christ. To pray before the tabernacle or the monstrance is to adore Christ really present as He is not present anywhere else except in heaven. Of the Eucharist alone, outside of heaven, is it perfectly accurate to say, This is Jesus Christ. In a beautiful homily on the Eucharist, Fr. Keep recalls that at the Last Supper, even though He knew it was a prelude to His crucifixion, Jesus said to His disciples, I have longed to share this meal with you (Luke 22:15). The longing of Jesus to give Himself to us, says Fr. Keep, is just as great as it was to give Himself to His Apostles. Imagine! Jesus earnestly desires to be united to us at each Mass we celebrate. Do we look forward to each Mass with such longing? We should meditate on all aspects of the Eucharist until it becomes our consuming desire to be united to Jesus and, through Him, to God and one another.

Our Lady of the Snow Parish 100th Anniversary Parish History ( ) by Gene Horton From the PATCHOGUE ADVANCE, May 29, 1969: TO DEDICATE BLUE POINT CHURCH BUILDING JUNE 8 On Sunday, June 8, the Most Rev. Walter P. Kellenberg, D.D., Bishop of the Diocese of Rockville Center, will dedicate the new church-auditorium of Our Lady of the Snow Parish in Blue Point. The dedication, which will also mark the 50th anniversary of the parish, will take place at 12:15 PM at a concelebrated Mass by Bishop Kellenberg and the Rev. Charles J. Murphy. The Rev. William Cenkner, O.P., Ph.D., will preach the homily. The new church-auditorium was completed in December, 1968; the first Mass being offered there on Christmas Eve. The building, a beautiful structure of natural brick and dark wood with clear glass windows reaching from the vaulted ceiling to the floor, was designed by Frederic P. Wiedersum Associates of Valley Stream and constructed by J.F. O Healy Construction Co. of Bayport. The entire project was under the supervision of the Building Commission of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. The sanctuary is of rubbed oak. Plans for raising $490,000 to construct the new church-auditorium were formulated by the parishioners soon after a fire on Palm Sunday, 1967 which destroyed the sanctuary, altars, and statuary, and severely damaged the sacristy of the original white stucco church which had been built in 1917 with a capacity of 350 people. The old church has since been renovated and is used for weekday Masses, weddings, and funerals. The new building, with a capacity of over 900, serves the community and growing parish. Aside from housing the increased crowds that attend Sunday Masses, its ample size allows it to be used for the school of religion, and other social functions. The parish of Our Lady of the Snow dates back to The fire in 1967 prevented the celebration of the 50th anniversary that year. The first Mass was offered in Blue Point in the early 1900 s. The increase of the parish population motivated the construction of a church in The first resident pastor was Rev. Charles A. Craig. The Rev. Peter A. Schutz had the church raised and built a basement under it in The land on which the confraternity house now stands was purchased by the Rev. Thomas J. Brennan in 1966 just before his death. The present pastor, Rev. Charles J. Murphy, spent 25 years in West Hempstead at the parish of St. Thomas the Apostle. His assistant, the Rev. John H. Gabrielle, was ordained in June, This is his first appointment.

RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY Do Not Conform Yourself to This Age St. Paul tells us, "Do not conform yourself to this age but...discern...what is good and pleasing..." The Respect Life Ministry meets the second Friday of the month, at 2 p.m. in the Cottage. The next meeting will be held October 13th. Join us for the next Prayerful Presence near Planned Parenthood on Waverly Avenue in Patchogue, Saturday, October 14th, from 10:30 a.m.- 11:30 a.m Since Roe v. Wade, around 60 million innocent children have lost their God-given right to live. An entire class of persons, children in the womb, have been relegated to the status of chattel, personal property, who can be disposed of by those more powerful than they. They have no power to resist. They are subject to abuse and destruction by those with more power, namely the power of the State. They have no voice that can be heard except our own. October 1, 2017 Stand Up for Life Event 2-3:30 p.m. L.I.E. Exit 70 Manorville October 7, 2017 Entering Canaan Day of Prayer & Healing for Men Affected by Abortion/For info call December 9, 2017 DRVC Day of Prayer & Healing for Women Affected by Abortion/For info call Without doubt, the killing of innocent children in the womb is the pre-eminent moral evil of our age. It is for this reason that we must "not conform" to this grave injustice. As St. Paul tells us, we must instead stand on the side of truth and justice and "what is good and pleasing to God." We must recognize what both medical science and natural justice tell us: children in the womb are human persons with an inalienable right to life. Undoubtedly, the most important human rights issue of our age is to protect our "first neighbors" ----children in the womb. The womb is the "first home" of the whole human race and standing up for them is a matter of solidarity with our neighbor and love for the poor.

21st Annual Golf Outing Honoring Dennis McCarthy A little humor from Father Fink The religion teacher asked the children why it was important to be quiet in church. A little girl answered, Because people are sleeping. When: Thursday, October 5, 2017 Where: Rock Hill Golf & Country Club You can join us for a full day of golf or just join us for dinner.. Celebrate our 100th Anniversary and honor a great parishioner.
