Measure yourself, our society, or the world against this standard. It s clear there are not too many people or places responding very well to the promptings of God s Holy Spirit. And, by the way, chastity doesn t mean celibacy. It means purity and fidelity to God s laws regarding sex. It is the call of the celibate, those married, the single, men, women, and people of every sexual orientation. We are all called to be chaste..

3 A Message from Father Charles Fink Page 3 July 19, 2015 My dear parish family, Last week I wrote about the importance of regular, preferably daily, spiritual reading, especially in a media-saturated world in which we re continually inundated with noise and images often damaging to our souls. My recommendations for spiritual reading were based what has been popular and helpful for generations of devout Catholics. In the case of The Imitation of Christ, which was written in the 14 th century, millions of readers over the course of hundreds of years have benefited from it. Neither it, nor any of the other books I recommended are intended to be read like a novel. They should be read slowly, reflectively, with time taken to mull over what one has read. This week I d like to recommend some books for those who are feeling especially ambitious and who are very serious about their spiritual journey. The first one, in my estimation, is a true contemporary masterpiece: The Fulfillment of All Desire by Ralph Martin. Martin was one of the guiding lights of the Charismatic Renewal back in the 70s and 80s. He s a married man who teaches in a Catholic Seminary in Detroit. What he does in this book is outline the stages and challenges of the spiritual journey based on the teaching of seven Doctors of the Church: Augustine, Bernard, Catherine of Siena, John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila, Francis de Sales, and Therese of Lisieux. This is a book to read, reread, and read again. Fr. Thomas Dubay, who died recently, wrote many fine books on the spiritual life. His Fire Within is as good an introduction to John of the Cross, Teresa of Avila, Carmelite, and gospel spirituality as you re likely to find. Simpler and clearer, perhaps, is his Seeking Spiritual Direction. The lists near the end of the qualities we should see in ourselves if we re on the right path are alone worth the price of the book. Very different is Fr. Benedict Groeschel s The Journey Toward God. It s an anthology of excerpts from spiritual guides from across the globe and the centuries, arranged according to major themes, each section with an illuminating introduction by Fr. Groeschel. The great Danish Protestant philosopher of the 19 th century, Soren Kierkegaard, once compared to depth of Christianity of his contemporaries to a tea bag that had been used to make a dozen or more cups of tea. Yes, he said, it s still a teabag, but no longer a very useful one, at least not for brewing tea. Yes, he said, we can call ourselves Christians, but pretty watered-down and useless ones. Kierkegaard wasn t known for his tact or diplomacy. If you want to see what real Catholicism looks like, real devotion, real love of God and neighbor, try one of these books. They may show you a world you hardly knew existed. With love and prayers, Fr. Charles Fink

5 KNOWING OUR FAITH XXVI. BAPTISM By baptism we are grafted into Christ, branches into the vine, so that Christ -life can flow into us in a kind of divine transfusion. It is by thus being grafted into Christ and sharing in His life that we become adopted children of God. He loves us before our baptism, but, strictly speaking, we cannot be called His children, no matter how much He loves us, until we share in His life and nature, just as, no matter how much I love my dog or cat, it cannot literally be called my child because it does not share the same nature with me: I am human; the dog or cat is not. Through baptism we become participants in the divine life and share in the divine nature. It is the glory of our human nature that it has this remarkable capacity to be raised up, to be divinized. In many souls the divine life that begins to flow into us at baptism seems to remain dormant because it is not tended and nurtured. In some, the souls of saints, it bears such fruit that we can almost see the light of Christ shining from them. But even in the greatest saints, what we see now is only the barest hint of what we shall one day be: Beloved, we are God s children now; what we will be has not yet been revealed. What we do know is this: when He is revealed, we will be like Him, for we will see Him as He is (1John 3:2). This transformation from mere human beings to children of God to something no eye has seen nor ear heard (1 Corinthians 2:9) begins with baptism. We speak of baptism s washing away Original Sin because by it we are incorporated into Christ, something we lacked before, the lack of which has both temporal and eternal consequences. We say that baptism makes us members of the Church because it makes us members of Christ s body. As of our baptism we live with a divine infection in our souls. Life s work is to let that infection spread, to break down our resistance to it so that it can spread more quickly and completely, until at last we can say with St. Paul, it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me (Galatians 2:20). The paradox is that only by the spread of this Godly infection and the death of ourselves do we begin truly to live and find our truest selves, while resistance to this infection is the path to sickness and, in the end, a death from which there is no return.
6 Believing with Joy! Stewardship - A Way of Life Stewardship and Parish Life Planned Parenthood and abortion clinics, infant clothing collections, prayer and participation in Catholics for Religious Freedom. They are also on hand at many other parish events to sell chances and raffles. All proceeds are used to support parish programs. Social Events Committee Events in the parish that will encourage fellowship and participation are planned by this committee. They create opportunities for us to gather as a parish community in relaxed and family-friendly settings. Events include the Parish Picnic and the Chili Cook-Off. Senior Women s Social and Service Group is a group of senior women who enjoy meeting and sharing laughter and conversations while being available to help the parish as needed.
