John Amoah, Associate Pastor Deacon Frank Hartmann Deacon Edward Karan Deacon Robert Gronenthal The great historian of philosophy, Etienne Gilson, once said of Chesterton that he was one of the greatest geniuses who ever lived. The quote above in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary is from Chesterton s poem The Trinkets, in which he pictures all creation as God s gift to her, a plaything, the smallest details of which she delights in. If you ve never read Chesterton, a good place to start might be his biography of St. Francis of Assisi or the one on St. Thomas Aquinas called The Dumb Ox.

3 A Message from Father Charles Fink Page 3 May 31, 2015 My dear parish family, As we come to the end of May, I want to invite you to a little examination of conscience concerning the place of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, in your prayer life. After all, our parish is named Our Lady of the Snow, one of the many titles by which she is known. How many of you know the origin of this particular title? Our parish churches, other buildings, and grounds boast at least four statues of Mary and as many more pictures. How many do your homes boast? When I was growing up a Protestant, we teasingly called Catholics bead-rattlers because it seemed they all prayed the Rosary. How many of you pray it regularly? Or ever? Do you know how? Have you taught your children and grandchildren how to pray it? Do you ever pray it, or at least part of it, as a family? The easy answer to these questions is, Father, you can be a good person without doing any of what you suggest, and that s what God cares about, being a good person. A lot hinges on the ambiguity of the word good in that statement, but let s say you re right. I hear the same reason given by people all the time for not going to church, for downplaying belief in Jesus, even for giving up belief in God, and for justifying all sorts of behavior once broadly condemned. Their argument goes: You can be a good person without church, Jesus, God, and if there is a God, He doesn t care about teens and adults sleeping around, getting drunk, doing drugs recreationally, occasionally lying, cheating, stealing. We re only human; God understands that and loves us anyway. There s just enough truth in this form of rationalization that more and more people fall prey to it. A recent public opinion poll indicates than fewer than half of all Americans now consider themselves Christians. How does that seem to be working out? If we want to be part of the solution to what ails the world, not part of the problem, the answer lies not in abandoning more and more of our rich Catholic traditions, but in growing appreciation of them. It s never too late to get started. It s never too late to change course and take the straight and narrow path that leads to the life and joy Jesus promised. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. With love and prayers, Fr. Charles Fink

4 Believing with Joy! Stewardship - A Way of Life Stewardship and the Holy Trinity Today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity. The Holy Trinity is one of the most fundamental mysteries of our faith. We profess our belief in the Holy Trinity as part of the Nicene Creed, our Profession of Faith, which we join together to say at Mass. The word creed is drawn from the Latin word credo, which means, I believe. As indicated we consider the Holy Trinity as a Mystery of our faith. A Mystery in this regard means that this is something that goes beyond our ability to genuinely understand it completely. That and other mysteries of the faith are sometimes a challenge for us as Catholics. If we do not understand nor fully grasp something, we may have a tendency to doubt, to have reservations. One of the joys of stewardship is trusting completely in God, of accepting the fact that we may never have all the answers. Needing all the answers is a human failing. As professed Catholics we need to accept, and we need to follow and commit to the Lord s call to discipleship. Stewardship Bulletin Reflections Mary Queen of Peace, Pray for Us Join us as we pray the rosary each week for peace on the following days: June 1, June 9, June 18 and June 22 at 4:45 in the Mother Church. Congratulations Our CYO 6 th grade girls volleyball team are The Division B Champions!. What is a Boot Sale? It is a yard sale out of the back of your car! The parish would supply the parking spaces; you supply your car and items you wish to sell. They can be new or used. A fee is charged for the parking space. A committee is needed to plan and run this event which would take place in the fall. A committee is needed to go forward with this idea, if you are interested please call Beth at This is the last call for a committee to run a Boot Sale or in English; a yard sale from the back of your car. Without a committee we cannot go forward. Next week our Second Collection will be for Religious Retirement. This collection will help with the retirement expenses of the men and women in Religious life, the sisters and brothers who consecrated themselves to God and who gives so much of themselves to us, the Church. Please remember to be generous. Catholic Ministries Appeal We are so close!! Thank You For Your Support!! 5 KNOWING OUR FAITH XIX. THE PAPACY History can be looked upon as a kind of laboratory in which various experiments are performed. In it we can see which experiments work, which do not, and among those that work, which work best. There have been three great experiments performed since our Lord s Ascension in an attempt to see to it that the work Jesus began when He lived on earth be continued. The Protestant experiment, only about five hundred years old, has tested the theory that all people need in order to know and love Jesus and others as they should is a Bible and a personal relationship to the Savior. The fruit of this experiment has been the proliferation of hundreds of denominations and sects, each claiming a more accurate interpretation of scripture. The Eastern Orthodox experiment, much older, has tested the theory that the Church must strictly adhere to ancient liturgical traditions and to the pronouncements of the early Christian councils. This has led to a great sense of continuity with the past but some difficulty in adapting to changing times and places. It is also a fact that the Orthodox Churches tend to be very bound by language, culture, and nationality (Greek Orthodox and Russian Orthodox, e.g.) and that they do not always get along very well with each other. The Protestants show great flexibility but have jettisoned much of our rich Christian tradition and continue to splinter and separate from each other. The Orthodox have held fast to tradition but with limited ability to adapt to changing circumstances or to interact with Orthodox of other nations. The single feature that makes the Roman Catholic experiment unique and has enabled it to extend its influence to every nation and people on earth, while maintaining remarkable continuity with the past, is the papacy. Because the successors of Peter have Christ s promise of infallibility in matters of faith and morals, the Church has been able to change the non-essential elements of our religion, adapting to varied times, places, and cultures, while maintaining rock-like stability in its essentials. Both Protestants and Orthodox are our brothers and sisters in Christ. Both have produced great and good people. Nevertheless, the lack of unity among Christians is a scandal and an impediment to evangelization. Christ s body on earth has one voice. That voice is the Pope s. To love as we should, in all its fullness, we must heed his voice.

11 SAVE THE DATE OCTOBER 14, 2015 OUR LADY OF THE SNOW GOLF OUTING ROCKING HILL COUNTRY CLUB At last I found my vocation: My vocation is love. A little humor from Father Fink President Woodrow Wilson, when he was governor of N.J, was awakened by a phone call very early one morning. Governor Wilson, your commissioner of highway has just died, and I would like to take his place. Wilson replied, It s all right with me, if it s all right with the undertaker. ~Saint Therese of Lisieux
