2 PAGE 2 A Message from the Pastor Recently I was asked to comment on the fact that church attendance across all denominations is declining. And specifically, what needs to change to reverse the decline? I stand alongside followers of Christ, citing that in order for the Church to reverse declining attendance, she must engage others where they are, accepting them as they are. Just because folks are not sitting in our pews doesn t mean that they have abandoned their need for God. They are addressing their spiritual needs in a twenty-first century world that no longer resembles the 1950s. We have witnessed fusion across all categories: fashion, music and cuisine, where cultural elements are mixed together in a new way. Similarly, people are choosing from a spiritual bag of practices that helps them connect to God and one another in ways that cross over ecumenical and interfaith boundaries. When we combine people s innate soulful searching/spiritual experimentation with today s society experiencing change at a rapidly increasing rate of adoption, it seems to me that the church is called to help people discover where their faith is alive. And then support and encourage them. When people realize that God has placed a dream in their heart and a community encourages them to try it on, they soar with blessings flowing both ways! So it is the church s great expectation to meet people where they are at and help them discover their passions. Knowing that each person is desired and loved by God as valued entrepreneurs, God has placed a desire in each of our hearts to be used for others. Could the church be a place where all would be invited to share what dream God has placed within them? And then encourage and help equip each person s dream to be realized? Thanks be to God that we have the Church to seek out, encourage, equip and affirm one another in the name of the One who loves us just as we are! Encouraged, gail PAGE 11 November 27 December 1 December 4 December 8 December 11 December 13 TBA December 24 December 25 Looking Ahead Soup luncheon and Christmas decorating after worship Guild Christmas Party Hanging of the Greens Communion Budget Meeting Christmas on the Canal Auxiliary Christmas Party Christmas Drop-In at Tom & Gail s Trustees & Deacons Church Council Christmas Caroling Christmas Eve Service Christmas Church Office hours Monday through Friday from 9am-12:30pm Gail takes Monday as her day off each week. 4 PAGE 4 Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service Sunday, November 20 at 7pm in the Chapel of First Congregational United Church of Christ 65 Church St. in the Village of Spencerport All your works shall give thanks to you, O Lord, and all your faithful shall bless you... The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food in due season. You open your hand, satisfying the desire of every living thing. Psalm 145:10 & 15 Pie Baking Day On Monday, November 7 all interested bakers are invited to help bake pies for the Election Day Bake Sale. We will gather at church at 9:00am to put in a day of baking. If you have questions, see Nancy Dean. PAGE 9 OBC Kids News Kid's Faith Discovery! After completing our 'Who s Afraid of the Dark study with the story of Daniel we have jumped in time to our faithful ancestors; The Pilgrims. During November our K.F.D class will learn about the Puritans voyage to the New World in September Europeans embarked on a journey that would test their faith and begin the building of our country. In Sunday School we are studying another journey of faith as we continue the story of Moses. We will look at similarities and connections between these two stories of pilgrimage. God allows trials that are often hard, yet his love and presence with His people see His plans through. Autumn Pew Pals has begun! Each child is partnered with an adult church member to share prayers, favorite Bible verses, personal faith experiences, small gifts and crafts. Relationships strengthen, connections are made as children and adults learn about one another and Christ. The Christmas Tea and Craft Show invites all children to Santa s Workshop! As parents shop children can make crafts, have some cocoa, decorate cookies and much more. Annual Reports Doris has asked for a heads up about annual reports as they will need to be turned in to her by January 1! That will give her the time she needs to prepare the full report and have it ready for the Annual Meeting on January 22, 2017 Director of Children s Ministry, Dale Shonk and the Board of Christian Education thank all who participated in this year s Trunk-or-Treat, whether you decorated a car, donated supplies or just came out to play. It was great fun for the children here at OBC and children in the community. A special Thank You to Pat Haines for sharing her wonderful Heavenly Soups. And many thanks also to our friends at Coffee Connection for their participation as well as the Service Learning Club at Spencerport High-school who come out and made the day special for all who attended.
