2 HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC CHURCH "As the Father has sent me, So I send you" Catholic parishes will observe World Mission Sunday next weekend, but it's not too early to give it some thought today. Pope-Emeritus, Benedict XVI explained that,"...the universal mission involves everyone, everything, and always. The gospel is not an exclusive possession of those who have received it, but a gift to be shared, good news to be passed onto others". Back in the day, when I was considering a possible vocation to the priesthood, I interviewed with the Maryknoll Missionaries in New York. To make a long story short, they didn't think that I had a missionary vocation or maybe even a vocation at all! As I continued my vocational searching I looked at other Orders, Communities, and seminaries. Of all that I researched, prayed about, and visited I decided the Capuchin Franciscans might be a good fit for me...and it has been for over 47 years. I decided on the Capuchins because they had a variety of ministries that I could be involved with. They were parish priests, retreat masters, hospital and military chaplains, teachers, youth workers...you name it and they were probably involved in it. If it was church work and ministry there was probably a Capuchin doing it. I really liked the variety, it was very appealing to me. After seminary and ordination I was assigned to teach in our college seminary and also take care of vocation recruiting in the New England area of the U.S. I enjoyed this work and was pretty content until our Provincial (the boss) called and asked me if I would like to go to Guam for three months to fill in for a priest who was due to return home for some leave time. I thought, 'Hey, three months on Guam would be both an adventure and a vacation from my teaching and interviewing responsibilities". This three month replacement assignment turned into a 17 year blessing of living, and ministering, on a Pacific Island which I came to call home with people that I called family. To be honest I never really saw myself as a missionary although that's what I came to be. I never really was "on fire" to go far away from home and be a priest to people I never really knew. And, I never thought that I would be able to be so far away from family and friends for great lengths of time. As Pope Benedict expressed so beautifully "...the universal mission is a gift to be shared, good news to be passed onto others." I guess the key to understanding this is to be open to doing what God wants you to do. It's as simple as blessing pets, providing a walker for someone in need, teaching the faith to our children, sharing food and time with fellow parishioners at our Food Fest, and of course offering prayers and attending Mass and the sacraments for spiritual nourishment. When we make ourselves available to God never underestimate what He can do with you. There is one ironic twist to my story that needs to be shared. Although the Maryknoll Fathers didn't think that I had what it takes to be one of them...i took my graduate studies with them, received my Masters Degree in Theology from them, but was ordained by the Capuchins to be a missionary for the church. It only goes to show that the church is by it's nature missionary...always open to the spirit and always concerned about everyone. Beginning my "mission" here at Holy Trinity, Fr. Mike

3 Parishioner Dennis Lock presents, to Debbie Burrows a new Walker, on behalf of our Parish. At a recent Stewardship meeting it came to our attention that Debbie's current walker was damaged (and not repairable) and it made her getting around difficult. Debbie attends our church and attends the Sunday 11 am Mass...travelling from downtown on the Handi-Van each week. Due to a serious health issue she totally lost her eyesight many years ago. Debbie was most appreciative of this gift and will use it on an upcoming mainland trip for her yearly health checkup...which she travels to unattended. Safe travels, Debbie...and Mahalo to the Stewardship Committee for identifying a need and being able PET BLESSING Thanks to all who participated in our annual St. Francis Day Pet Blessing on Sunday October 9. It was a great success! We had 29 pets and 50 humans in attendance. Pets included one cat, two birds, and one tortoise (photograph), and lots and lots of dogs old ones, young ones, big ones, little ones Father went to each family and introduced himself to the pet, then did a general blessing after reading the story of Creation from Genesis. It was amazing that the cacophony of barking, meowing, and squawking completely died down once Father started reading the passages from the Bible! After the reading and general blessing he blessed each animal individually, by name, sprinkling them with holy water and tracing the sign of the cross on them. It was beautiful! All pets and their humans went home with treats! All the pets behaved themselves (no rough and tumble, no accidents) and left the breezeway in good condition! It wasn t quite up to Noah s Ark proportions as Father Mike wanted, but there s always next year! We hope to see more of you in Thank you to Alicia Enos and Deacon Dan and Rita for all their work in putting it together.

5 Adult Faith Formation Advent Opportunity Holy Trinity Church would like to welcome those baptized adults, 18 and older, to be in full communion with our Catholic Church by receiving their Sacraments of Confirmation and First Eucharist. The journey toward full communion in our Catholic Church begins with filling out a Diocese of Honolulu RCIA Inventory Form. This form must be completed and turned into the parish office before the First Sunday of Advent, along with a current original copy of your Baptism certificate from the Church where you were Baptized. All applicants will be contacted to set up an appointment with Fr. Mike. Times and dates for the required classes during Advent have not been set yet, but will be determined as soon as we know how many applications are received. For further information, please contact the parish office at Happy Anniversary Congratulations 50 years ago, John and Marion Baricuatro were joined in marriage at the Church of St. John the Baptist in Kalihi. This weekend they are celebrating their Golden Anniversary and will renew their vows at our Saturday evening Mass. May the Lord continue to bless your married life with all good things. (Marion is a cantor at the Saturday Mass and John also assists at this Mass.) DAUGHTERS OF ST. PAUL The Daughters of St. Paul will be here the weekend of October 29/30. They will have books, rosaries and medals. It is a good time to start your Christmas shopping and bring spiritual growth to those on your list.
