Please send articles to: mjmggm@aol.com or for information on this newslettercontact:jerry Munley (630) Brothers: The weather cooperated nicely last Friday and Saturday when many of our council s members were out on the street corners collecting donations for our Intellectual Disabilities Drive. Their efforts added to those who collected at Jewel in August and at Walgreens before that. We ll have another opportunity in October to seek donations after Masses at St. Scholastica and Christ the Servant. Thank you to everyone who has worked the ID Drive so far, and let s continue the effort so the church drives will enable us to exceed our ID Drive Goal. Special thanks again to Dennis Bik, our ID Drive Chairman, for his leadership of this worthy charitable project. Last month, brother Knight Joe Gajc presented a fundraising idea he said is working very well for a Knights council in St. Charles. That council puts together apple pies and sells them. Our council is invited to participate in this project, but it will require us to get orders for the pies by October 26 th. About five volunteers would need to go to St. Charles on two days to help make the pies as well as make up the boxes for them. Our cost per pie would be $6.00 and we could sell them for whatever we wished, possibly $10.00 or $12.00 each. A member from the St. Charles council has been invited to attend our Wednesday, September 26 th meeting. I think this is a good fundraising opportunity for us, but it will require a few volunteers and some sales effort to make it a success. Let s talk about it further at Wednesday s meeting. 2 September 2018 Page Express The month of October is just around the corner and it is designated as the month of the Holy Rosary. Even though we pray the Rosary at our meetings maybe we ought to look at the purpose, history, and reason for the Rosary. The purpose of the Rosary is to keep in memory certain principal events or mysteries in the history of our salvation and to thank God for them. The Rosary (from Latin rosarum meaning rose garden or garland of roses) is a Marian devotion to prayer and the commemoration of Jesus Christ and the events of his life. The Rosary probably began as a practice by the laity to imitate the monastic Divine Office (Liturgy of the Hours) during the course of which the monks daily prayed the 150 Psalms. The laity, many of whom could not read, substituted 50 or even 150 Hail Mary s for the Psalms. The first historical reference to the Rosary, however, is from the life of St. Dominic in the 13 th century. He preached a form of the Rosary in France at the time that the Albgensium heresy was devastating the faith there. Tradition has it that the Blessed Mother herself asked for the practice as an antidote for heresy and sin. So why pray the Rosary today? Certainly it is to grow in holiness and in one s prayer life. There are many other reasons. At Fatima our Lady asked us to pray for peace in the world. Sister Lucia, one of the seers of Fatima said, My impression is that the Rosary is of the greatest value and not only according to the words of Our Lady of Fatima but according to the effects of the Rosary one sees throughout history. My impression is that Our Lady wanted to give ordinary people, who might not know how to pray, this simple method of getting closer to God. (Continued from page 1) We re planning to have a membership drive at St. Scholastica in October. Father Norbert agreed to let us speak briefly about the Knights of Columbus at all Masses, and encourage men to join our council. We need to grow our membership by 13 members if we want to achieve Star Council this year. Remember to ask a Catholic man you know about joining our order. Also, if you haven t already, I encourage all members to meet with our insurance field agent Joe Spada so he can inform you of all the fine insurance products available through the Knights of Columbus. It s time to turn in your Vocation Raffle books. In addition to supporting religious vocations, our council gets money back for every $15.00 we sell. This is another important program our council has enthusiastically supported in the past. Let s surpass our goal for this drive as well. Under the Faith in Action program for all councils, one of the major categories is Community. We need to pick an activity that will help the less fortunate. Known as a Helping Hands project, I d like to propose three ideas. There is a store in Addison, called ReStore, which is associated with Habitat for Humanity. It needs volunteers to handle donated building materials and household items. Another activity would be to volunteer at DuPage PADS, a homeless shelter service that always needs volunteers in mornings and at night. A third idea would be to help out for several hours at the Greater Chicago Food Depository. It is in constant need of volunteer help packing food items. Let s pick one or some other activity to show our Helping Hands. Be aware that a representative from the West Suburban Community Pantry has been invited to speak at our September 26 th meeting about the pantry s need for volunteer drivers. Please give her your kind attention. Lastly, we will be voting on the budget for the fraternal year at the September meeting. I hope to see many of you then. Vivat Jesus!
