The Pastor s Two Cents Anointed: Priest, Prophet and King We can sometimes become discouraged that less people are coming to church, and less people are finding faith to be important in their life.

3 The Pastor s Two Cents Anointed: Priest, Prophet and King We can sometimes become discouraged that less people are coming to church, and less people are finding faith to be important in their life. This can cause us to question our commitment to faith and church. However, I see this challenge as part of our prophetic role in Christ. The Gospel reminds us that he too experienced rejection and lack of faith. Fr. Thomas Rosica, CSB the Chief Executive Officer of Salt and Light Catholic Media Foundation, is someone I have known from Rochester and who is a Basilian priest who has served the Holy Father in Rome. In a blog he wrote about Baptism as a Call to a Prophetic Career. He writes, When we were baptized into Christ Jesus, we were baptized into his death. Our baptism is a public, prophetic and royal anointing. We receive the life of the Church and are called to sustain that faith life. Faith is about concern for others. Faith is a public -- not private -- responsibility. Baptism is a call to a prophetic career. How we live that out may vary from person to person. The ways may not be as dramatic as the adventures of an Isaiah or a John the Baptist, yet they are in that same great prophetic tradition. To be prophetic is to become involved and to get our hands and feet dirty. Through our own baptism, we can become a light to others, just as Jesus is a light to us, and to the world. Our own baptism fills us with a certain boldness, confidence and enthusiasm, reminding us that the Gospel must be proclaimed with gratitude for its proven beauty. In many parts of the world today, baptizing children has already become the exception. The number of unbaptized infants, children, young people, and adults is on the rise. The decline in the practice of baptism is the result of an erosion of family ties and a departure from the Church. He and Pope Benedict XVI, by reference, go on to say that we should never give up on those who Pope Benedict describes as being on the margins. He say s, I too, with time, came to realize that we must follow, rather, the example of the Lord, who was very open even with people on the margins of Israel of that time. On the day of our Baptism we were anointed with the oil of Sacred Chrism, uniting us to Christ in his role as Priest, Prophet and King. We are empowered by the Holy Spirit to live out our Baptismal call. However, we should also remember that A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and in his own house. When we experience this we should know that Jesus also experienced it. Such judgement by others did not deter Jesus from commitment to his mission, which would reach its apex in the prophetic message of the cross. Therefore we must not allow such judgement by others to deter us from living out our Baptismal call! May the Holy Spirit work in us and through us that we may prophetically proclaim the Gospel of Christ to all by the way we live! The Sunday Meals program is a soup kitchen that is manned by Hornell area church and community volunteers. Soup Kitchens have a longstanding community history in the United States, dating back to the late 1800 s. Businesses and other groups have always stepped up to support members of their own communities who need a little extra help. Without your support we would not be able to provide these services to the men, women, and children who visit our local soup kitchen. At our Sunday Meals program teams take turns preparing and serving the meals one Sunday, every 2-3 months or so. Recently, one of our OLV soup kitchen teams mentioned that they have room for new team members! Over the past several months they have lost members due to illness and other health concerns. They could use 3-4 new volunteers who are dedicated to helping feed the poor! Volunteers are also needed to help make deserts for the meals. If you would like to volunteer to serve on the team, please call Deb Brinkhus at the parish office, Why do Catholic Bibles have more books than Protestant Bibles When Martin Luther translated the Bible into German, he chose to leave out the Old Testament books that weren t originally written in Hebrew: Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch, 1&2 Macabees, and parts of Esther and Daniel. However, the Catholic Church, under the Holy Spirit s guidance confirmed that the books Luther removed are divinely inspired and chose to keep them (CCC #120). 5 A Note From Your Cemetery Volunteers Please understand that we are volunteers and we do our best to keep the cemeteries properly maintained. There are a few things you can do that will make our jobs easier, and keep the cemeteries looking their best. 1) Mowing and grass trimming is done as needed and as the weather permits. Please note that there may be a few times where the grass may not get mowed as often as it should. This is typically due to schedule changes caused by inclement weather. 2) We do our best to trim the grass as close to the headstones As possible. Occasionally, the string trimmer may bounce awkwardly resulting in inadvertent trimming of flowers. We apologize in advance if this happens to you. There are a few things you can do to minimize this occurrence. Make sure your flowerbed extends no more than twelve (12) inches in front of the headstone and does not extend at all to either side. Make sure a proper flowerbed is prepared. This includes removing all grass sod from around your flowerbed. Consider installing an edging material; like stone, wood or heavy plastic, around the perimeter of your flowerbed. This edging will create a protective barrier between your flowers and the string trimmer. 3) Any flowers/plants that have clearly died will be removed. 4) SPRING CLEAN-UP: Spring clean-up is typically done the middle of April. Please remove any Christmas/winter decorations prior to April 1 st. This includes mums, pumpkins and other decorations left over from the Fall. 5) FALL CLEAN-UP: Fall clean-up is typically done during the first two weeks of October. a) ALL planted flowers/plants will be completely trimmed. This does not include Fall flowers such as mums. (If possible, consider waiting until after the Fall clean-up to place your Fall flowers.) b) Artificial flowers and decorations left at the headstones will be thrown away. Any decorations you wish to keep should be removed by the end of September. They can be returned after the Fall cleanup. Please remember that there is no regular refuse pickup. This means that you are responsible for taking away any refuse you create, including sod, flower containers and dead flowers. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but past trials at having trash cans just created overflowing trash and made the cemeteries look messy. PLEASE, PLEASE do not place your refuse by the watering hoses, hoping someone else will pick it up. If we all work together, our cemeteries will continue to look beautiful. Family things to do for the Summer Bless each child some morning before the day s activities begin. Say a prayer for someone going through a difficult time. Pick up a blade of grass and think about the one who made it. Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more (Luke 12:48). Please remember to call the office to have your friends and loved ones removed from the sick list when the need is past. Prayer Corner As a parish we have been asked to pray for people who are sick, facing surgery, etc. We thank God for His healing goodness and ask that you please let us know when someone can be removed from the prayer list. The Gospel According to St. Thérèse Beginning Sunday, July 15th at 3:30PM in OLOV Meeting Room Continuing Adult Faith Formation Thérèse of Lisieux is one of the most popular saints of our time and for good reason. As Pope St. John Paul II wrote when declaring her a doctor of the Church, Thérèse s little way is nothing other than the gospel way of holiness for all. In these classes we will explore some the insights St. Thérèse gave us about God and his merciful love. She was inspired by the Gospel to find a new and more direct way to heaven. This simple cloistered French nun shared great secrets to help us all become saints. Sign-up sheets are available at the church entrances June 24 th July 8 th. A Sunday Gospel Reflections July 8, th. Sunday in Ordinary Time Mark 6:1-6 Gospel Summary - Our hearts go out to Jesus in this gospel because we feel his pain when his own family and friends reject him. The news of Jesus miracles and healings had by now spread throughout the region and when he returned to Nazareth to teach in the synagogue, the people there were unbelieving. How, they wondered could someone as common as a laborer have such authority from God? Sadly, Jesus could not do the wondrous work of God in his own home town. There are not further times recorded in the gospels that Jesus entered another synagogue after the rejection he experienced in Nazareth. Reflection for Families - How many times do we shy away from saying what we know to be the truth? We may see a coworker, a relative, or friend making some poor decisions. Or we may witness injustices in our society. It s easier to turn our heads in the other direction and not get involved. After all, our lives are going fairly well and someone else s mistakes or misfortunes don t really affect us. But don t they? We are answerable first to God, but we also need to keep in mind that our children are watching (and will eventually imitate) our every move. As difficult as it is, it is our responsibility to show them how to be strong and courageous even when our words and actions might be unpopular. Bringing the Gospel into your family - Name some people in your own community, or elsewhere in the world, who have at least some of the qualities of a prophet. Consider whether or not these people have been rejected for things they have said. Who has benefited from their words? Find a way as a family to support, either physically or in prayer, at least one of the world s prophets.
