3 The Pastor s Two Cents...Our heart is restless until it finds rest in You These words of St. Augustine come to my mind as I reflect on this weekends Scriptures. The full quote which comes from St. Augustine's Confessions is, You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you. The young restless heart of Samuel in our first reading will only find true peace after he responds to the persistent call from God. The wise Eli finally understood that the Lord was calling the youth. So he directs Samuel to respond. In the Gospel, Andrew hears John and responds by accepting Jesus invitation, Come and you will see. In doing so Andrew is so taken by Jesus that he must go and share the news with his brother Simon. Both of them would soon discover the truth of St. Augustine s words. The truth is that we all have some restlessness, call it what you will. The wisdom of St. Augustine reminds us that there is only one place where we will find total peace. God is relentlessly calling each of us to the relationship which will give us peace now and endless peace in our total union with God. The problem usually arises because we do not listen or because we mistakenly think that we can find this peace somewhere else. Life has taught me that while other things can bring me some peace and keep my attention for some time, I again become restless. Throughout all this time God is calling to me, inviting me to come and see. Like Samuel and Andrew we are called to listen for the Lord s voice (that is why it is so important to regularly join the community for the Mass and receive Holy Eucharist.) By responding to God s invitation we will discover that for which we long, and like Andrew will want to share this Good news with others. Search as you will, as St. Augustine rightly reminds us, you will not find lasting peace and fulfillment anywhere else! 5 All the difference Jesus Resurrection is the most important reality that shapes our Christian lives. It is this truth that proves that the Gospel; is real. Those of us who believe in the Resurrection live differently. We live with hope. The Quest Youth Group Adult/Young Adult volunteers are needed to help out with the Quest Youth Group throughout the year for meetings and events. Holy Communion Kick-off Meeting Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at 6:30pm. in the Assembly Hall, for children scheduled to make their first holy communion in May and their parents. Because preparation for 1st. Holy Communion takes place in the home, it is imperative that you attend this meeting so we can answer any questions you may have concerning this preparation or the reception of the sacrament itself. We ll be distributing books and other material for the home study program. ALSO we will be celebrating the completion of First Penance by serving refreshments and a light snack. Why do Catholics Believe in Purgatory? In Scripture, Jesus said, Whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come (Matthew 12:31). And 2 Macccabees 12:46 reads, Thus he made atonement for the dead that they might be freed from this sin. We understand Heaven to be so perfect that we can t enter unless our souls are in a perfect state as well. When we die in God s friendship we eventually go to Heaven, but if we haven t properly atoned for our sins we have to be purified in Purgatory first. We may be forgiven, but we still have to atone. This means being patient with those who annoy us, kind to those who are demanding, and forgiving to those who haven t asked. Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips (Proverbs 27:2). Sunday in Ordinary Time John 1:36-42 Gospel Summary - In today s Gospel Jesus begins to call his disciples. The first two to be called were disciples of John, who pointed out to them that Jesus was the Lamb of God. Andrew, one of the two, then brought his brother Simon to Jesus, saying that Jesus was the Messiah. Those who responded to Jesus call sensed that there was something different about this Teacher, though they did not yet understand what following him would require of them. Reflection for Families - We can sense the excitement of those first disciples when they saw Jesus and received Jesus invitation to follow him. They literally stopped what they were doing and followed him, inviting others to join them along the way. Today is a good day to think about our own level of excitement when we hear the words of Jesus spoken in the Gospels or see him in others around us. Do we share enthusiasm for our faith in Jesus with our children? Do we, through our words and actions, lead them to him? How so? Bringing the Gospel into your family - Invite family members to help each other trace their footprints onto colored construction paper. Have each family member write or draw on each footprint one way he or she follows Jesus. Give family members time to share with each other what they have written or drawn. Cut out the footprints and display them on the refrigerator or in a place where all family members will see them. Title your display Our Family Follows Jesus. Discussion Starters In today s Gospel, Andrew brings his brother Simon to Jesus. For today s discussion, invite family members to think about people they know whom they would like to bring to Jesus in prayer. For example, perhaps you want to bring to Jesus a neighbor who is ill, a classmate whom no one likes, or a friend whose parents are getting a divorce. Write each name on a slip of paper and place the papers in a small basket or bowl. Conclude by inviting family members to draw one name at a time and to read the name, inviting all to respond, Lord, we bring (him/her) to you. Lord hear our prayer.
