3 The Pastor s Two Cents I do not know of anyone who has not been moved as they observed the devastation and destruction caused by hurricane Harvey. What is so beautiful is to see people from all races and backgrounds coming together to pitch in to help those who are Harvey s victims; some losing everything, including some people they love. Why is it that it takes so much sadness and loss for people to come together. Should not this be our attitude all the time? Even in nature God tries to teach us if only we take the time to observe and learn. The emperor penguins of Antarctica know the importance of teamwork. They huddle together by the thousands, providing enough warmth to survive the brutal, freezing weather of Antarctica. They take turns monitoring the outside of their giant huddle, on the lookout for danger or food. After one of the penguins finishes perimeter duty it moves to the inside of the group where it can rest and keep warm. The penguins could not survive if they didn t rotate and take turns keeping each other warm. Every penguin contributes to the whole group. No one is less important than any other. The emperor penguins can teach us about the importance of community, which Jesus emphasizes in this weekend s Gospel. We are called to recognize our responsibility to support the faith of each other in this community of faith. The core of this responsibility is love; and the presence of love in the midst of us in the person of Jesus! As Catholic s we are called to observe our Sunday obligation. However, this obligation is not meant to be a burden; but rather a means to live out our responsibility to each other and support the faith of each other. Now, you may think that no one will miss you if you are not present, but the truth is that when one person is missing the whole body suffers. Jesus is present with us when we gather for our Sunday Eucharist. To quote one of the Eucharistic prayers, Blessed indeed is your Son, present in our midst when we are gathered by his love, and when, as once for the disciples, so now for us, he opens the Scriptures and he breaks the bread. It is Jesus who unites us in faith and feeds us with his own body and blood. It is important that we not wait for a disaster to occur for us to come together and support each other on our faith journey. May God help us to learn from the example of the emperor penguin and dedicate ourselves to be present for our Sunday liturgy to support each other in faith and to recognize Jesus in our midst in the Eucharist we share and in the ones with whom we share it. Don t forget, The Lord is with you! Fr. Stan Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

5 And the Lord said, Let it go It is good sense to be slow to anger, and an honor to overlook an offense (Proverbs 19:11). Human nature entails taking offense when someone says or does something we don t like. When it happens often, however, being offended doesn t just hurt or feelings, it compromises our happiness and wellbeing. Try these ideas to let it go Assume the best. Most people aren t out to get us. Unless proven otherwise, believe that others have good intent and don t mean to offend. They re just living their lives. Step back. We often get upset because others disagree with or don t share our opinions. Opinions are separate from identities. Someone can disagree with what we think but still enjoy who we are. Don t make it about you. Thinking that what others do or think reflects on you is fertile soil for being easily and often offended. Most of what happens around us has nothing to do with us. Allowing others to live their own lives regardless of you and yours takes a huge burden off your shoulders. Break the habit. Taking offense easily is a habit that, fortunately, can be broken. Instead of noticing what others are doing to us, we can choose to note what is done for us by God and others. Practicing gratitude is more pleasant than feeling hurt. Attention: OLV Parish Cemetery The deadline for Fall clean-up in all cemeteries is October 10th. All plants and decorations must be removed by this date. Anything left after this date will be removed by cemetery workers. Mums may be placed or planted on or after October 18th. Stand up for the Gospel of Life! Take part in this year s 40 Days for Life Rochester Campaign from September 27 through November 5. Through prayer and fasting embrace human life and promote the end of abortion. New members are welcome! What is the history behind the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart? Devotion to the Sacred Heart has been present since the time of the early Church. The Church Fathers considered Jesus Heart to be the source of the sacraments of Baptism and the Eucharist, symbolized by the blood and water that flowed from Jesus side at the Crucifixion. The devotion continued into the Middle Ages when Pope Innocent VI instituted a Mass for the Sacred Heart. However, its great popularity as a devotion resulted from the visions of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a young nun at the Visitation convent at Paray-le-Monial, France. On December 27, 1673, St. Margaret received the first of four great visions of Christ, in which he asked her to spread the devotion and described the practices connected to it. He revealed his great love for us, saying, Behold this Heart which has so loved men that It spared nothing to prove to them Its love. At first her efforts were rejected, but in seventy five years after her death - Pope Clement XIII officially approved the devotion. Sunday Gospel Reflections September 10, rd. Sunday in Ordinary Time Matthew 18:15-20 Gospel Summary - Jesus set for his followers a three-step procedure for reconciling differences among the community. In the first step we are told to go one-on-one to the person and try to work out the problem. If that doesn t work, we are to take some witnesses, or in the final case, bring the offender before representatives of the Church. If reconciliation does not occur in the end, there is nothing more we can do and are told to walk away from the person. Reflection for Families - Reconciling differences is one of the most challenging jobs of parenthood. When our children jump immediately to step three (we sometimes call it tattling), we need to remind them and guide them through the first steps. Our children need to see us model this as well. How often do we fly off the handle and accuse someone of wrongdoing rather than approach him/her rationally. When our children see us calmly, but firmly, address someone, naming the infraction and saying how the action made us feel, they learn that there are other ways besides hostile confrontation to work out differences. Bringing the Gospel into your family - The next time there is an argument or injury in your family, try this formula: In a normal tone of voice, let the person who was injured say to the one who inflicted the hurt, it hurts me (or makes me feel ) when you If the perpetrator is genuinely willing to ask for forgiveness, they may say something like, I m sorry for hurting you by I will try not to in the future. Will you forgive me? The injured person must decide if he/ she can accept the apology and truly forgive the other person. If not, a time should be named when they will try this formula again. If reconciliation does occur, the formula should end with some gesture of peace. Discussion Starters There was a time when I had to correct someone who did something wrong. This gospel would have helped me There is a situation I know if where this formula will help me. I plan to use it by I know it was had for someone to correct me once when...
