Please bring a dish to pass. The Parish will be providing Stern s BBQ Chicken, ice tea, lemonade, coffee and bottled water. There will be games and Bingo! If you would like chicken with your dinner, please sign up so we know how many we will need to order! Sign up sheets are in the front and back entrances of the church! There will be no take outs. Looking for a Faith Formation Coordinator For a number of years Suzanne Piatt has coordinated the children s faith formation program. Grateful for her many years of selfless service I felt it was time to ask another person to take on this responsibility for our parish as a part time paid position, allowing Suzanne to focus on other responsibilities in her life. If you have questions, are interested, and would like more information about this position please contact the parish office ( ) and speak to Donna. Information is available. Please RSVP to Dave Prete by Sept. 30th at (607) or prete1818@yahoo.com Sunday Meals Bake Sale We have another opportunity for you to help the local soup kitchen here in Hornell. As you know the local soup kitchen is called Sunday Meals. There is a new team serving at the Sunday Meals program that is made up of guests who attend on a regular basis. This new guest team does not have church funding the way the other teams do to cover the cost of the supplies needed for the meals. So to help raise the funds for their supplies, the local area churches are taking turns selling homemade bread. The bread is made at the Presbyterian Church. St. Ann s will be selling the homemade bread the weekend of August 25 th /26 th in the front foyer after all the masses. So for a donation of any amount you can help support the guest team and at the same time enjoy delicious homemade bread. RCIA - Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults Classes will begin in early September for RCIA. If you know of anyone who s interested in coming into the church or learning more about the process, please call Peg Griswold, , or the OLV Parish offices, We will have an informational meeting on September 9 th after the 10:30am mass in the church library. It is important that all checks written out to the parish be made out to Our Lady of the Valley. One hour to contemplate many blessings to pray for those who are not as lucky as I am and to offer thanksgiving for all that I have. Sacrament of Confirmation Preparation Program Open to teens in 8th grade and above Teens and their parents are invited to attend an Information and Registration Meeting Sunday, September 9 th at 9:15AM In the Assembly Hall of the OLV Parish Center This is a two-year preparation program that provides an opportunity for teens to learn and develop a greater sense of what it is to be a Catholic Christian. Each year includes 25 hours of classroom instructions, as well as opportunities for retreat and service to the local community and Church. Classes are held Sunday morning, prior to the 10:30 Mass. Confirmation classes will begin in early Fall. Children: What can I do for my family to show them Jesus love? A Sunday Gospel Reflections August 19, th. Sunday in Ordinary Time John 6:60-69 Gospel Summary In today s Gospel, Jesus followers reach a point on the journey where it is time to make a decision. Do they believe in Jesus and in what he has said? Should they continue to follow him? Or is it time to walk away and to return to their former way of living? Many are unable to accept Jesus words and choose to no longer accompany him. When Jesus asks the Twelve if they also want to leave, Peter answers, Master, to whom shall we go? Reflection for Parents Imagine that you are with the Twelve and the other followers of Jesus today. Where do you find yourself on the road? Do you believe in Jesus and in his Word? Do you choose to follow him? Or are there points on the road where you slip into a former way of living into old habits, behaviors, and attitudes that are not becoming of a disciple of Christ? Take some quiet time to think about your level of discipleship. Is it whole-hearted, half-hearted, or barely evident to your family and to others? Commit yourself today to continuing to follow the Master, the Holy One of God. Bringing the Good News Into Your Family Help each family member trace his or her footprint onto a piece of construction paper. Cut out the footprints. Have each family member write his or her name on one side of the footprint. Then pass the footprints around and ask other family members to write down ways they see the footprint owner following Jesus. Adults and older children can help younger children do this too. After everyone has contributed to each family member s footprint, invite family members to read what has been written on their footprints.
