3 The Pastor s Two Cents Where you are not, we have naught... The Holy Spirit is often referred to as the forgotten member of the Holy Trinity. Yet, the Holy Spirit is essential in our life and in the life of the Church. Without the Holy Spirit the bread and wine persists as ordinary bread and wine. Without the Holy Spirit the sacred scriptures are just words. Without the Holy Spirit the church is just another organization. However, with the Holy Spirit ordinary bread and wine is transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ; the sacred scriptures become the Word of God and Gospel of the Lord and the Church is fanned into flame as the Body of Christ; the sons and daughters of God in the world. As St. Theresa of Avila reminds us, we become Christ s hands, feet and voice in the world. Have you ever noticed the images of the Holy Spirit in the church? Can you find where they are? The words of the sequence which we read / sing this day is a prayer that each of us should take to heart. O most blessed Light divine, Shine within these hearts of yours, And our inmost being fill! Where you are not, we have naught, Nothing good in deed or thought, Nothing free from taint of ill. On the faithful, who adore And confess you, evermore In your sevenfold gift descend; Heal our wounds, our strength renew; On our dryness pour your dew; Wash the stains of guilt away: Bend the stubborn heart and will; Melt the frozen, warm the chill; Guide the steps that go astray. 5 Parenting tips from the Mother of God God chose Mary to be the Mother of his Son, and gave her the preparation she needed to do the job. Jesus thought so highly of the mother she became, that his dying thoughts were of her. During this month for mothers, we can take parenting tips from the Mother of God: May it be done to me according to your word (Luke 1:38). When faced with events beyond her understanding or control, Mary leaned on God. We, too, encounter situations we can t understand or control. That s when we can imitate Mary s trust in God. His plan for her worked out better than she could have dreamed. The same will be true for us. Do whatever he tells you (John 2:5). Mary knew when her Son was ready for his first public miracle so she gently nudged him when he hesitated. We, too, can show gentle confidence in our children s competence and encourage them to reveal their strengths when they hesitate to believe in themselves. And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart (Luke 2:19).When the extraordinary happens, our first impulse is to tell someone. We want advice or attention. Yet, throughout life with her divine Son, Mary kept to herself and reflected in private moments. She sought only God s counsel because he knows best. Stan will lead us in a celebration of Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ with a Eucharistic Procession from St. Ann s Church to the Perpetual Adoration Chapel after the 10:30 Mass. Once in the chapel, the celebration will continue with Benediction. Eucharistic Processions are an ancient practice of the Catholic Church which express outwardly our love of Christ present in the Blessed Sacrament, our desire to proclaim this to others, and our realization that this presence is not just for us, but for the whole world. Carrying the Blessed Sacrament, Fr. Stan will walk from the church to the Perpetual Adoration Chapel. He will be accompanied by the Deacons, the Cross and Candle bearers, Thurifer, and YOU the people. Our choir will join us as well to help us sing praises to the Lord as we process to the chapel. Sacrament of Confirmation If you see Sydney Heinig around town, please congratulate her. Sydney is receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation this weekend at St. Clement s Roman Catholic Church in Etobicoke, Canada, through the cooperation and permissions given by Cardinal Collins of Toronto and Bishop Matano of Rochester. In addition to completing the required two year Confirmation Preparation course of study, Sydney completed her required service project and retreat requirements. Congratulations Sydney! The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation (Confession) can sometimes feel like an obligation instead of an encounter with God s mercy, but it doesn t have yo be that way. Try these tips for a more joyful Reconciliation. Examine your conscience. Compare your actions to the principles of the Ten Commandments (Exodus20) and the Beatitudes (Matthew 5). Bring to the confessional the significant ways you have failed to live up to them. Confess the small ones, too. Participating in the Sacrament frequently means that you may only have venial (minor) sins to confess. Confess them anyway. Piling up venial sins can lessen our resistance and pave the way for mortal sin. Confessing keeps our consciences sharp. Express contrition and resolve to avoid sin. Ask for the grace to continue growing in holiness and avoiding evil. The point of the Sacrament is to reconcile us with the God who loves us more than we can imagine, and who is always eager to forgive us. Confession helps us come back and begin again. Diocesan Missions Sunday Today, on Diocesan Missions Sunday, we are filled with renewed faith as the Holy Spirit comes upon us and calls each one to move beyond our daily concerns, important as they are, to help the Sisters of St. Joseph and the Sisters of Mercy bring the faith to God s people in Brazil and Chile. Bishop Salvatore Matano reminds us of our strong and proud mission tradition. The support of our Diocesan Missionaries by the Church of Rochester is a great piece of our history. May we, as partners of Christ, help to build God s kingdom by our prayers and financial gift today. The Adult Faith Formation page on the Our Lady of the Valley Web page is now available. A Sunday Gospel Reflections May 20, 2018 Pentecost Sunday John 20:19-23 Gospel Summary - There is much to be attentive to in today s short Gospel reading. First, Jesus appears to his disciples and says to them, Peace be with you. Then he says, As the Father has sent me, so I send you. He concludes by breathing on them the Holy Spirit, saying, whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained. We see these three statements hinted at in the liturgical and sacramental life of the Church: Peace be with you - the Sign of Peace; As the Father has sent me, so I send you - the Dismissal of the Mass; and Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, The Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation. Reflection for Families - One of the greatest gifts we can give to our children and to our families is the gift of peace. Peace is one of the Fruits of the Holy Spirit, a visible sign to others that we are living under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and according to the laws and commands of God. Take time today to think about the gift of Christ s peace in your own life. Do you have the gift of Christ s peace? Do you need the gift of Christ s peace? Where are you called to take the gift of Christ s peace today? Bringing the Gospel into your family - On a piece of poster board or large drawing paper write the letters of the word peace vertically. Create a family Peace Acrostic by thinking of words and phrases that describe what people can do to share the gift of Christ s peace at home, at school, at work, and in the world. For example the letter P could stand for, Pray for world peace every day. Challenge family members to name as many words and phrases as they can think of. Post your Peace Acrostic in a place where all family members will see it and will be reminded to share the gift of Christ s peace with others. Discussion Starters To me, peace means...
