3 The Pastor s Two Cents What is the glory we seek? In a reflection about today s Gospel, Fr. Ron Rolheiser wrote: We all nurse a secret dream of glory. We daydream that in some way we will stand out and be recognized. And so we fantasize about great achievements that will set us apart from others and make us famous. The daydreams vary but, inside them, always we are at the center the most admired person in the room, the one scoring the winning goal, the ballerina star, the actor picking up the Academy award, the author writing the best-seller, the intellectual winning the Nobel Prize, or even just the one in the circle who tells the best story. This isn t all bad or unhealthy What s less healthy in our daydreams is how we envision that glory In our fantasy, glory means having the power to actuate ourselves in ways that set us above others, even if that is for a good motive (However) as we see from the Gospels, real glory doesn t consist in out-muscling the bad, or anyone else. When Jesus was being crucified, he was offered precisely the challenge to prove that he was special by doing some spectacular gesture that would leave all of his detractors stunned and helpless: If you are the Son of God, prove it, come down off the cross! Save yourself! But, with a subtlety that s easy to miss, the Gospels teach a very different lesson: On the cross, Jesus proves that he is powerful beyond measure, not by doing some spectacular physical act that leaves everyone around him helpless to make any protest, but in a spectacular act of the heart wherein he forgives those who are mocking and killing him. Divine kingship is manifest in forgiveness, not in muscle. That is real glory, and that is the one thing of which we really should be envious, namely, the compassion and forgiveness that Jesus manifested in the face of jealousy, hatred, and murder. We also see this illustrated in today s Gospel. Jesus views glory differently than James and John; differently that we do! For Jesus Glory is achieved by rising above selfishness, bitterness, anger and revenge to compassion, forgiveness and love! The former notion of Glory might be referred to as vain glory, which we so often seek; while the later is the real glory which Jesus displays and calls James, John, his disciples and us to pursue. Fr. Rolheiser concludes, Our secret dream of glory is meant to mature so that eventually we will begin, more and more, to envision ourselves as standing out, not by talent, looks, muscles, and speed, but by the depth of our compassion and the quality of our forgiveness. And so a question we may want to consider this week is: If greatness means service and sacrifice, how can I be great today? Don t forget, The Lord is with you! Fr. Stan

6 Chapel of Perpetual Adoration Open Hours Sunday at 1:00am. (once every 4 weeks) *2 openings Thursday at 1:00pm Saturday at 11:00 pm (for a few months) Substitutes are welcomed. Please call: Isabel Nobilski or Donna Kull Thoughts from those who come to the Chapel of Adoration I am so thankful for our Adoration and love in my hour in Chapel with Jesus and Mary. This is how to begin my week and it gives me a feeling of peace as my worries and problems seem to disappear. I hope I can continue to spend this holy hour with Jesus for the rest of my life. A Sunday Gospel Reflections October 21, th. Sunday in Ordinary Time Mark 10:35-45 Gospel Summary In today s Gospel, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, were concerned about who would sit at Jesus right and at Jesus left in the heavenly kingdom. They, like the other disciples, did not understand Jesus teaching that things are different in God s kingdom. The greatest ones are the least among us. They are those who humble themselves to be the servants of all. Reflection for Parents Take a few minutes today to offer prayers of gratitude for all the people who serve you and your family. Think of those who are easy to take for granted the letter carrier, the waiter or waitress at the restaurant, your assistant at work, the garbage collector, your spouse, and even your children. Say Thank you to these and others who serve you in any way in the week to come. When you are with your family, help them become more aware of all who serve them in quiet and faithful ways too. Teach them to say Thank you and encourage them to be grateful for the care and goodness these servants bring into your lives. Bringing the Gospel Into Your Family As a family, brainstorm a list of persons whom you could serve. Perhaps an elderly relative needs help with household or yard chores, or a neighbor is recovering from surgery and could use help with running errands. Maybe young parents could use a babysitter so that they can enjoy an evening out, or new neighbors could use a hand getting to know more about your neighborhood and the town in which you live. Choose acts of service to do together as a family. Make an action plan and follow through on your plan. Discussion Starters Someone who served me this past week is... who... Someone I served this past week is... by... Someone whom I think is a great person is... because... Prayer Corner As a parish we have been asked to pray for people who are sick, facing surgery, etc. We thank God for His healing goodness and ask that you please let us know when someone can be removed from the prayer list.
