3 The Pastor s Two Cents Beato Angelo of Furci This weekend a number of people of Italian heritage will be having a dinner in honor of Beato Angelo d Furci (Blessed Angelo of Furci, Italy). A number of Italians who emigrated to this area are from the area where Blessed Angelo is revered. So I thought I would share some information about him with everyone. FURCI Italy is a little town on a hill not far from the Adriatic Sea. In this charming little town is where Blessed Angelo of Furci was born. Angelo s parents Adalipto and Albazia were advanced in age and were childless. They prayed continually that through the intercession of St. Michael the Archangel that by God s grace they may have a child. And so it happened in the year 1246 a child was born to them who was Baptized Angelo (according to the direction of St. Michael.) They raised Angelo diligently in the faith. Two miles from Furci was located the Benedictine monastery at Cornaciano, where Blessed Angelo s uncle was Abbot. It was here that Angelo received his education, where he also developed a deep devotion to the Holy Eucharist. Upon the death of his uncle Angelo left the monastery to return to his parents. When the blessed youth had been home for a year, his father fell fatally ill. He called his son to his bedside and told him about his birth and God s intervention. The father also mentioned the fact that Angelo might wish to become an Augustinian. When a year had passed since his father s death, Angelo gave what he had to the poor and said a moving farewell to his elderly mother and his relatives and friends. He urged them to have a heartfelt love for one another, and said that he would betake himself in the direction of Vasto, without knowing where he would end up, but trusting in the help of Saint Michael the Archangel and of the great Father, Saint Augustine. The first building he came upon after hours of walking was precisely the monastery of Saint Augustine. Angelo asked to join the Augustinians. He was admitted as a novice in 1266, at twenty years of age. He made his religious vows and then spent four years in the study of theology. After completing his theological studies, he was ordained a priest and was sent to Paris, where the most promising young men were assigned. Father Angelo, who was now about twenty-five, arrived in Paris in In Paris he met Blessed Giles of Rome, a renowned professor of the Order of Saint Augustine, who became his teacher. Giles was filled with admiration for the young friar. Father Angelo stayed in this city for five years, until With the degree of lector, he returned to Abruzzi in order to teach theology there. We do not know in which convent Angelo taught; it seems, however, that he remained in his province for about eight years. When Blessed Clement of Osimo was once again elected prior general of the Order in 1284, he came to Naples to preside at the provincial chapter in the monastery of Saint Augustine. The prior general, knowing the reputation of the learned and holy teacher, chose him to be first lector in the chair of theology at Saint Augustine s in Naples. When the capitular fathers of the provincial chapter held between 1288 and 1291 were unanimous in electing Father Angelo of Furci as prior provincial, the latter humbly refused, for he thought himself unworthy to govern. But Blessed Clement required him to accept. He obeyed and showed by his deeds that he was no less capable of successfully governing than of successfully teaching. When Angelo reached the age of 81 in 1327, he fell ill and had to cease from his labors. He died on 6 February 1327 in the monastery of Saint Augustine in Naples. A number of parishioners have a very deep connection with Furci and some were born there. They continue to have a deep devotion to Blessed Angelo, whose statue can be found in the Blessed Sacrament chapel of St. Ann s Church. Each year in September the statue is placed in the main body of the church and a celebration takes place led by the Blessed Angelo of Furci Society. Don t forget, The Lord is with you! Fr. Stan

5 CALLING ALL MEN! Catholic Men s Conference 2018 A day of learning & reflection with the theme The Eucharist - Exult Rochester presents the 4th annual Diocese of Rochester Catholic Men s Conference - Saturday, October 13th in Rochester beginning with 8:30AM Mass with Bishop Matano, motivating nationally known Catholic speakers, time for prayer, confession, and more! For information & registration see For car-pooling from Hornell Larry Shurfine96@gmail.com. This one day always provides motivational Grace and Inspiration in a confusing world! Sacrament Connection Without the help of Jesus, indeed the very gift of his life, we could not be free from our sins. Because of this redeeming act, we are brought into a right relationship with God. However, it is our responsibility to continue in that relationship. By participating in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we strive to live in a way that is pleasing to God. In the sacrament, we acknowledge what we have done that is hurtful. We tell God that we are truly sorry for our actions and promise to try not to hurt ourselves or others again. Through the priest, God forgives us for our sins. Even though we try not to sin, we know we will fail from time to time. That is why we can receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation repeatedly. The Sacrament of Matrimony is celebrated when two baptized people are united in marriage. The man and woman joined in matrimony become a sign of Christ s love for the Church and they form a new family, sometimes called the domestic Church. This new family is a place for practicing discipleship as family members often put other people s needs before their own. 40 Week Winners Final draw at Party 8/26/2018 1st prize - Joanne Schiller 2nd prize - Joyce Klenchik 3rd prize - Joseph Hooper 4th prize - John Pieko 5th prize - Ann Potter 6th prize - Linda Fucci Sing up by Nov., 4th for next year! A Sunday Gospel Reflections September 16, th. Sunday in Ordinary Time Mark 8:27-35 Gospel Summary In today s Gospel reading, Jesus begins his journey to the Cross and Resurrection. The disciples are beginning to understand that Jesus is the Christ, but they cannot reconcile their understanding with Jesus own foretelling that he will suffer, be killed, and rise after three days. Peter rebukes Jesus. But Jesus makes it clear that all who follow him will lose their lives for his sake. Reflection for Parents As a parent you want what is best for your child. You make sacrifices to provide opportunities for your daughters and sons. Those sacrifices might include sacrificing a career in order to be home with your children or taking on an extra job to save for your child s college tuition. Those sacrifices are everyday examples of what it means to deny [yourself], take up [your] cross, and follow me (Mark 8:34). Today, take time to rest in God s love. Remember those who made sacrifices so that you would have opportunities in life. Pray about the sacrifices you are making or feel called to make out of love for God and others. Bringing the Good News Into Your Family At the dinner table throughout the coming week, ask family members to answer the question posed in today s Gospel: Who do you say that [Jesus is]? Also invite family members to share the names of those who have helped them come to know Jesus. Discussion Starters People who think like God thinks Someone I know who follows Jesus is One way I can be a better followers of Jesus is
