3 The Pastor s Two Cents Thirteen Days and Counting! By the time you read this on Sunday I will have completed thirteen days at Our Lady of the Valley. I will say that it has been a full thirteen days!! I have accomplished quite a bit of unpacking! However, I still have a ways to go. I have been trying to fit it in when I can. It has been a joy (but a little overwhelming) meeting all of you after masses and at the Kof C gathering and along the journey. By now you probably noticed that I like to ride my scooter. Yes, it is a scooter, but the largest that is made and you need a motorcycle license to ride it because it is a 650 cc scooter. I like it because it is quiet, automatic, has a large trunk and gets over 50 miles to a gallon of gas. I will be writing this article on a weekly basis to share with you about life and at times to reflect on the readings. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I do putting it together. I am not one to make many changes in a parish unless I notice something is not working well or I have no other choice. That being said, I do plan to make a slight change in the daily Mass schedule beginning the week of July 31. Beginning that week the daily Masses will be at 12:10pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. There will be no Mass on Wednesday because I will take that day off. There are many reasons why I cannot take Tuesday s off but I will not get into that here. It has also been quite a while since I took vacation, once again there are many reasons. So, I plan to go and relax for a number of days beginning Sunday, July 23 after Masses and I will be returning on Saturday, August 5 for Confession at 3:30pm. During those days I hope to kick back and relax and maybe do a little fishing. As we enjoy these beautiful summer days I will reflect on something that St. Augustine once said and I encourage you to do the same. In one of his sermons delivered around 411 A.D. St. Augustine said, Question the beauty of the earth, question the beauty of the sea, question the beauty of the air, amply spread around everywhere, question the beauty of the sky, question the serried ranks of the stars, question the sun making the day glorious with its bright beams, question the moon tempering the darkness of the following night with its shining rays, question the animals that move in the waters, that amble about on dry land, that fly in the air; their souls hidden, their bodies evident; the visible bodies needing to be controlled, the invisible souls controlling them; question all these things. They all answer you, 'Here we are, look; we're beautiful.' Their beauty is their confession. Who made these beautiful changeable things, if not one who is beautiful and unchangeable? Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to little ones. God s treasures are revealed to us daily if only we have eyes to see, ear to hear, a nose to smell, a hand to touch and a heart to love!! I am sure some other things will arise as time goes on and I will be sure to let you know about them. I do hope that you will take some time (when it is not raining) to smell the roses and rejoice in the wonders of God s creation. Enough for now... Don t forget, The Lord is with you! Fr. Stan

Father Bruce, a native of Buffalo, NY, was ordained to the priesthood in He has served at Glenmary s missions in Okolona, MS., Grayson and Vanceburg, KY, Louisville, GA, and Waldron, AR. 6 Adult Faith Formation It s time for Summer School!! Summer Bible Study for Adults - The Eucharist is the source and summit of our Catholic faith. But do we really understand it? Classes will run for six weeks beginning Sunday, July 23rd. at 3:30pm. in the meeting room. Come understand and see the essential connection between the Eucharist and the Scriptures. Through reflection and discussion you ll learn to apply the principles in your own life. The Eucharist will change the way you look at the Mass and allow you to meet Jesus as transformed by his gift of life. Sign-up sheets are at the entrances of both St. Mary s and St. Ann s. An $11.00 donation is suggested to help the parish cover the cost of the book. Thursday at 10:00pm. Friday at 7:00am. (6/23 to 8/13) Saturday at 2:00pm. Substitutes are welcomed. All volunteers must be trained through the Diocesan Creating A Safe Environment program (CASE). We honor Jesus name out of respect for the Person to whom it belongs. At the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth (Philippians 2:10). Another reason that we honor Jesus name is because it reminds us of all the blessings we can receive through him. And Jesus promised, you he will give you (John 16:23). By honoring his name, we honor him. Kindness In today s busy world, showing kindness to others can go along way to sharing love. Remember how good it felt the last time someone showed you an unexpected kindness? Look for ways to show kindness, even when it s unexpected. It can be something simple, like holding the door for the person behind you or offering up prayers for people who need them. Do not neglect hospitality, for through it some have unknowingly entertained angels (Hebrews 13:2). The Eucharist There is nothing littler, meeker, or more silent than Christ present in the Host. This little piece of bread embodies the humility and perfect silence of God, his tenderness and his love for us. Sunday Gospel Reflections July 16, th. Sunday in Ordinary Time Matthew 13:1-23 Gospel Summary - While we call this Gospel, The Parable of the Sower, it is much more about the seed than the farmer. Although there will be obstacles to telling others the Good News, the message will be received by many. Some of the sower s seeds fell on rocky ground, on paths where people walked and among thorns. While these seeds probably won t take, the seed that fell on good soil has the chance of reaping a tremendous harvest. Reflection for Families - We meet many obstacles and sometimes feel our children simply don t hear us. But the seed that falls on good soil (and our children are good soil) will produce an enormous yield. We need only to not be discouraged, to not give up in the face of obstacles. Bringing the Gospel into your family - This is a great Gospel to show children literally its meaning. Plant seeds in the types of places described in the Gospel - on rocky ground, paths where people walk, weed or thorn patches, and on good, fertile soil. Check the locations every day or two and notice what is happening. As a family, make connections between what is happening to your seeds and the seeds described in the Gospel. Continue the observations by connecting the seeds to your own lives. What does this lesson mean to your family? How are you like the seeds? Discussion Starters I have seen good seed grow in my life when I think about Sometimes the seeds I plant don t grow. Because One way our family can become richer soil is by...
