3 The Pastor s Two Cents Peace on earth, good will to all! Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was filled with sorrow at the tragic death of his wife in a fire in The Civil War broke out the same year, and it seemed this was an additional punishment. Two years later, Longfellow was again saddened to learn that his own son had been seriously wounded in the Army on the Potomac. Sitting down to his desk, one Christmas Day, he heard the church bells ringing. It was in this setting that Longfellow wrote these lines: I heard the bells on Christmas Day Their old familiar carols play, And wild and sweet The words repeat And thought how, as the day had come The belfries of all Christendom Had rolled along The unbroken song Till, ringing, singing on its way, The world revolved from night to day, A voice, a chime, A chant sublime Then from each black, accursed mouth The cannon thundered in the South, And with the sound The carols drowned It was as if an earthquake rent The hearth-stones of a continent, And made forlorn The households born And in despair I bowed my head; "There is no peace on earth,"i said; "For hate is strong And mocks the song Of peace on earth, good will to all." Then pealed the bells more loud and deep. "God is not dead, nor doth he sleep! The wrong shall fail, The right prevail, With peace on earth, good will to all!" 5 Volunteer Opportunities: Funeral Mass Servers We are looking for adult parishioners to act as altar servers at the funeral Masses at both St. Mary and St. Ann s. Servers accompany the presider as he greets the family and receives the body in the entrance procession and assists the priest during the Mass. Training will be provided. For more information please contact Fr. Stan at the parish office. Bereavement Committee The members of this committee serve our parish by compassionately assisting families in the planning and celebration of the funeral Mass for deceased loved ones. The committee members assist by helping to select readings, intercessions and music. Training is provided through shadowing of more experienced committee members. If you would like to assist in this important ministry please contact Beth Ann Jacobs at First Penance/First Holy Communion Program First Penance Program This is an at-home parent-led program open to children 7 years old and older who have been baptized in the Catholic Church. It is expected that children who enroll in the First Penance program are also participating OLV s children s faith formation program or attending a Catholic School. Registration forms for the First Penance/First Holy Communion program are available at the entrances of both St. Mary and St. Ann s churches. Forms can be dropped off at the parish office or mailed in to Deb Brinkhus C/O Our Lady of the Valley Parish 27 Erie Ave. Hornell NY Parent meeting for First Penance - Tuesday, January 15th at 6:30PM at St. Ann s Church This meeting is intended for St. Mary and St. Ann s parents who plan to have their children make First Penance during Lent 2019 followed by First holy Communion in May Books and material on First Penance will be distributed at that time. Cost of the books will be $9. First Reconciliation Mini-retreat - Tuesday, March 5th at 6:30PM in the Assembly Hall at the Parish Center. First Penance with Fr. Stan Fr. Stan will offer three Saturday opportunities for First Penance. March 16th, March 23rd, March 30th - 2:30 to 3:00PM for St. Ann s parishioners and by appointment with Fr. Please call: Isabel Nobilski or Donna Kull Thoughts from those who come to the Chapel of Adoration This chapel is one of the greatest blessings for our Parish. Being able to spend time with the Lord in this Chapel is precious. We are so fortunate to have this chapel. I encourage everyone to spend regular time with the Lord. It is a great and beautiful gift. A Sunday Gospel Reflections December 30, 2018 Feast of the Holy Family Luke 2:41-52 Gospel Summary In today s Gospel, Mary and Joseph discover that Jesus is not with them in the caravan returning home from celebrating the Passover in Jerusalem. After searching for three days, they find him back in the Temple. Mary questions why Jesus stayed behind, but she does not fully understand Jesus response he had to be in his Father s house. Reflection for Parents Parents who have lost track of a child, even for a few minutes, can understand the anxiety Mary and Joseph must have felt when they realized that Jesus was not with them. Like most children, Jesus seemed rather nonplussed about it all. While most parents strive to do their best at keeping track of their children and keeping their children safe from harm, there will be times of anxiety, confusion, and worry along the way. As a parent, pray daily for God s protection for your children and for all children of the world especially those in harm s way. Bringing the Good News Into Your Family The word holy means connected to God. Today, take a family inventory of how you are staying connected to God. Decide as a family one way you can become a more holy family by deepening your connection to God in the coming year. Perhaps you will say grace together at every meal, whether at home or in a restaurant. Maybe you will increase your donations to the parish food pantry or clothes closet. Or maybe you will take the time to pray together each day before leaving for school or work. Discussion Starters A time when I was lost and frightened was... I think our family is holy because...
